The Ginami Castle of Gromo was built in the XIII century by the family Buccelleni for military use as evidenced by the tower armigera now the symbol of the town. Built above a spur or lump of rock, will probably be this position to give the name to the village, which is not in fact appointed in official documents until the dawn of the XIII century.

Built in stone quoins local gray distributed in ashlar style, is positioned above a spur of rock and its imposing tower is visible from all over the valley. The part to the west is facing onto piazza Dante, who was the old market square. On the facade there is a large painting depicting San Cristoforo, performed during the first years of the twentieth century, to hide a damage of the facade. In the part facing the east the building is divided into two separate bodies and parallel, this part underwent a huge reconstruction in '900, when, due to the construction of the new provincial road in the valley bottom, donated a part of the rocky outcrop with one side of the castle. The tower with a square base, which is among the most ancient parts of the complex, has never suffered variations, in 1553 is an act of the Council of capigamiglia of Gromo for the realization of a bell pro faciendo unam campanam quae superius ponatur turis castri dominorum de Becellenis, bell which was authorized by the family of the castle, but that was never realized, the only variation is the roof that covers made in the first years of the twentieth century. In the restoration work of 1952 shooting light the ancient façade in masonry in large ashlars of squared stone and placed in regular courses on the side facing the square.

Il castello di Gorzone, che appartenne alla nobile famiglia dei Federici di Valle Camonica, è un castello situato a Gorzone, in provincia di Brescia.
Storia e descrizione
Il castello sorge su uno sperone roccioso compreso tra il paese di Gorzone ed il fiume Dezzo, è una costruzione spoglia, austera, con finestre ad arco acuto, senza più torri. In una foto del 1920 si vedono i resti di almeno una torre.

All'esterno un ampio parco orientato verso est, mentre sui lati meridionale e occidentale è presente una scoscesa scarpata che scende nel fiume Dezzo.

La struttura risalirebbe al 1160, ad opera della famiglia Brusati, poi divenuta Federici, ghibellini, alleati di Federico Barbarossa.

Nel 1287, a seguito della grande ribellione camuna, il comune di Brescia, emette un bando contro la famiglia Federici con una ricompensa per la distruzione delle sue rocche. Il castello venne distrutto e saccheggiato nel 1288, ma grazie alla riappacificazione tra la famiglia ghibellina ed il Comune bresciano, grazie all'arbitrato di Matteo Visconti, la rocca venne ricostruita tra la fine del XIII e l'inizio del XIV secolo.

Negli anni 1490-1495, grazie alla pax veneta, il castello perde la sua funzione di rocca e si trasforma in residenza signorile, ampliandosi e costruendo un loggiato interno in stile veneziano.

Inciso sulla pietra simona del portale d'ingresso, oltre allo stemma dei Federici (scacchi d'argento trasversali in campo azzurro) quello dei signori veronesi Della Scala.

Il giardino interno, sul quale si affaccia un loggiato con archi e colonne ricchi di stemmi, presenta un pozzo di raccolta d'acqua piovana.

All'interno sono presenti sale, pareti finemente decorate, soffitti a cassettone con pregevoli decorazioni.

Al di sotto del castello vi erano delle gallerie, oggi parzialmente crollate, che comunicavano con l'esterno, verso il Dezzo e la Casa Caffi, che apparteneva ai Federici del ramo cadetto.

La struttura del castello
L'importante complesso artistico gorzonese è l'unico castello in Valcamonica rimasto integro in tutta la sua struttura.

Il castello è separato dal gruppo di case della contrada da un muraglione in pietra viva che ha inizio dal portale d'ingresso e prosegue collegandosi con il fianco esterno della chiesa di S. Giovanni Battista. L'ampio portale trecentesco d'entrata è formato da conci in arenaria rossa. Sul muro di cinta alla destra del portale, si trova un concio di pietra disposto orizzontalmente che reca incisa l'iscrizione: 1.6 / 4 / GB.iiioojj

Superato il portale, concluso il tratto di rampa a selciato è presente sulla destra un secondo muro di cinta, basso e terminato da merli che immette nella spianata antistante al lato sud-est del castello.

Il lato sud-est
Il lato sud-est è costituito a destra da una porzione in pietra viva, una centrale dove è presente la porta di accesso al cortile principale e a sinistra un corpo su due livelli con l'entrata al cortile minore.

Il portale di accesso principale è a sesto acuto e costituito da conci in pietra simona nella parte superiore, normali conci di pietra come imposta e piedritti in pietra di Sarnico. I tre conci centrali presentano scolpite le insegne dell'aquila imperiale sulla chiave dell'arco e ai lati lo stemma dei Federici a sinistra e quello degli Scaligeri a destra. La decorazione ottocentesca ad affresco che ornava con una fascia a motivi vegetali stilizzati l'estradosso dell'arco è nella quasi totalità scomparsa tranne un frammento della fascia decorativa sulla destra e lo stemma araldico della famiglia.

La porzione di sinistra della facciata del castello presenta nel primo livello due finestre rettangolari a strombo chiuse con inferriate e sotto di esse vi è una bocca di lupo, corrispondente ad uno dei cantinati. Mentre nel secondo livello di questa porzione troviamo quattro finestre, tre con arco a sesto ribasso e una con architrave semplice.

L'estremità destra non si presenta intonacata ma a conci in pietra viva ed è costituita da un aggetto formato da un muro che oggi fa da sostegno a un terrazzo. Questo è ciò che rimane della torre, che fu eliminata dopo gli interventi di restauro del 1928.

Il lato sud-ovest
Si affaccia sulla forra del fiume Dezzo, presenta le facciate dei due corpi di fabbrica che costituiscono i blocchi formanti il cortile minore del castello. Un muro di cinta a terminazione orizzontale più basso che chiude il cortile minore del castello e che presenta nel mezzo un ampio arco a pieno centro oggi murato, chiude lo spazio fra i due corpi di fabbrica.

La parete destra può essere divisa in tre fasce cronologiche: quella centrale è databile tra la fine del XIII e il primo quarto del XIV; l'estremo lato destro e il lato sinistro possono essere correlate al periodo a cavallo tra la fine del Quattrocento e l'inizio del secolo XVI.

Il muro della facciata del corpo di fabbrica di sinistra non presenta aperture di particolare rilievo ma nell'angolo in basso a sinistra, è presente una piccola apertura trecentesca che immette su una terrazza esterna.

Il lato nord-ovest
È diviso in tre settori con differenti altezze, è fissato su una scarpata di arenaria rossa e si presenta nella sua totalità composto da varie successioni architettoniche tutte riferibili al XIV secolo.

Il lato nord-est
È a tre livelli e mostra anch'esso una successione di varie fasi evolutive susseguitesi nel corso del Trecento. Nell'angolo in basso a destra è presente una scaletta con rampa che porta attraverso un pianerottolo ad una porta.

Castello di Gorzone

A lion rampant and an eagle with big talons grasping its prey represent the symbol of the ancient and noble Suardi family, depicted on the entry portal of Bianzano Castle.

The historical complex, dating back to the XIII Century, features a perfectly square plan whose diagonal lines indicate the cardinal points.

Located on a tableland overlooking the western side of the Cavallina Valley, the building allowed to control the north-western and north-eastern faces, from where the enemies could arrive: the road coming from the Seriana Valley across the Valle Rossa (the “Red Valley”) and the one connecting Bergamo with Lake Iseo and the Camonica Valley. It also provided a good view over Lake Endine and the Mount Torrezzo.

The numerical proportions and the symbols disseminated all over the castle lead one to think that, originally, it was a seat of the Templars, the knights belonging to the medieval religious order: would you like to learn more about it?


Several well-known proofs, along with some new ones, confirm the presence of the Templars.

The first one is in the emblem of Bianzano Municipality, featuring two symbols: a silver shell and the pilgrim’s staff, validating the fact that the village used to be a stopover for wayfarers and believers.

The Templars provided assistance to pilgrims, so they may have chosen this place as a sort of headquarter to control the upper valley. But there’s more: historians and enthusiasts have been examining the castle for a long time, discovering many interesting facts. 

First of all, 1,618: this is the golden ratio, also called “Phidias’ proportion”, obtained dividing the height by the base of the two portals situated in the Castle’s courtyard. This numerical rule was already theorized by the Greeks and carried on by Leonardo da Vinci, who probably applied it to the Last Supper.

Moreover, in Castel del Monte, Apulia, there seem to be the same archaeo-astronomical elements also found in Bianzano: the orientation towards the cardinal points, with the square plant’s four corners, perfectly sets the sun rays during solstices and equinoxes.

More in detail, during the equinoxes the light strikes a determined corner inside the building, while during solstices the points of incidence detect both length and height of the tower, the castle and the courtyard. On the other hand, the moon is able to adjust the castle orientation to the cardinal points with 10 degrees of difference.

Among the symbols, it is also interesting to know that the “flowers of life” we find in many Templar places of worship, along with the black and white lozenges, can hide the heaven-earth and light-darkness duality that’s typical of the Templar culture.

It looks like the mystery of Bianzano Castle is enclosed in the medal decorating the fortified tower’s vault, featuring some birds. They are actually crossbills: according to the legend, they tried to take the thorns off Jesus’s crown. The reference to the Templar cross is clear.

Out of curiosity
Every year, during the first weekend of August, the Castle hosts the historical re-enactment of a very important event: in 1367 Giovanni, a member of the Suardi family, married Bernarda Visconti, Bernabò’s daughter, ruler of the Duchy of Milan, receiving the castle itself as a wedding gift. 

After the restoration work carried out between the 60s and the 70s, the building is still in good conditions. It serves as the summer residence of its owners, while a couple of lodgers-keepers live here the whole year long, in the raised ground floor at the tower’s entrance.

Bianzano Castle 

The tower with the Guelf battlements and the old entrance, the Knights’ hall and the wine cellars form the original nucleus of the medieval fortress that was built in 1200. Instead, the manor house and chapel are the result of important extension work carried out in 1700 which was then followed by restructuring in the nineteenth century. In 1953, the Castle and its vineyard became the property of the Reschigna Kettlitz family who have given new impetus to the production of high quality wines. The Castle’s winery is one of the oldest in Italy and it is open to the public with advance booking for guided visits, walks in the vineyards, wine tastings accompanied by local products, private or company events, concerts, exhibitions and special evenings. Accommodation is also available in the Castle Guesthouse.

Castello Grumello

The castle that overlooks Sondrio, erected in a strategic position at the entrance of the Valmalenco valley, is the only military structure in Sondrio of medieval origin to have reached modern times intact and is still in use, although over the centuries its function has changed. Its architectural structure also changed, leading it to the heterogeneous and stratified aspect it has today, so that Masegra Castle provides us with a visible cross section of the past 700 years of history in Valtellina.

Its history is complex. Originally a medieval castle, the seat of the feudal lords known as the Capitanei, rulers of Sondrio, it was damaged and rebuilt many times, especially in the thirteen and fourteenth centuries. In the 15th and 16th century it served as the elegant seat of the Beccaria family, heirs to the Capitanei. Towards the end of the century, it was ceded to the powerful Grison clan of the Salis Soglio, who, following the grievous and sanguinary events of the two decades that opened with the so-called “Holy Slaughter”, turned it into a flourishing agricultural estate. It was seized and returned to its military function as a garrison with the territory’s annexation by Napoleon and finally, after World War II, it became a military post. Today, the castle complex is owned by the municipality.
