Probably of late-Roman origin, during the Middle Ages the castle was both defence and refuge thanks to its commanding position over the town and the plain.
It has been the stately home of Counts Biandrate di San Giorgio Canavese since the 18th century. The salons are embellished with frescoes, coats-of-arms and coffered ceilings and ribbed vaults also decorated with frescoes.

CASTELLO DI SAN GIORGIO CANAVESE
The origins of the Biandrate Castle probably date back to the 10th century when the "castrum" of San Giorgio Canavese was an important outpost that oversaw the territory. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the castle complex consisted of two structures: the Old Castle (Castelvecchio) dating back to the 12th century and a second structure which dates back to between the 13th and the 14th century. The first was almost completely destroyed in the 19th century and an English style garden has been created in its place; the second structure assumed its present day look during the 18th century. The San Giorgio Castle is, just like Pavone, a magnificent castle restructured in the 18th century for a society event: the wedding of the Marquis Ferdinando di San Giorgio and the Marquise Vilcardel de Fleury. The grandiose atrium that opens on to the yard and the great staircase d'onore on the first floor, in fact, date back to the period; the medieval towers were eliminated in favor of a central body with three foreparts that jut out onto the yard. Because of this, the structure takes on the look of a majestic palazzo with rooms on the ground floor which are enlivened with multi-colored decorations. In the 19th century, however, a slow period of decline began, which was stopped by the restorations carried out by Ricci for Emanuele di Rovasenda, who inherited the complex in 1916. During the 1950's, the Rovasenda family abandoned the castle, ceding it to a private company that will oversee its restoration.

Castello di San Giorgio Canavese

The imposing outline of the Castle of Malgrà has been marking the outline of the town of Rivarolo since 1333, the year in which the Counts of San Martino began its construction.
Built as a military presidium, it then became a welcoming noble mansion thanks to a series of important structural and decorative interventions, made possible by the peacetime which began in the 14th century.
The building originally included two separate parts and a tall defence tower, it was extended by adding a floor to the west wing and embellished by frescoes over the main entrance and under the small porch in the inner courtyard. At the beginning of the 17th century, ownership was transferred to the Gria family and subsequently to the Cortina of Favria family.
Large salons with ceilings decorated with flowers, now temporary exhibition rooms, were obtained in the north wing during the 17th century. Architect Boggio di San Giorgio designed the elegant staircase leading to the first-floor corridor, marked by round-arched windows overlooking the Canavese countryside.
Towards the end of the 19th century, thanks to the shrewd foresight of Countess Natalia Francesetti, the experienced Alfredo d’Andrade and his collaborator Carlo Nigra arrived at the Rivarolo castle in order to implement a grand and stylish refurbishment.

Castello di Malgrà

Not one, but two Mazze Castles (Castello di Mazze). Nicknamed the “big castle” and the “small castle”, they are united by a large park that encloses the fortified complex which the Counts Valperga had built in the 12th century. The smaller castle is also older and has a crenellated wall and a high, square tower with double lancet windows in terracotta. The square shape is reminiscent of the castle’s larger central tower, which, for its part, is characterized by its rectangular layout, pointed windows, and perimeter walls that are crenellated and “closed” by towers. The castle is a two-storey structure: on the first floor is the Hall of the Throne (Salone del Trono) with frescos by Romolo Bernardi that finish on a lacunar ceiling; the Pink Room (Sala Rosa) is in a Baroque style and decorated with courtly themed medallions; the Gold Room (Sala d’Oro) has mosaic flooring and ceilings with 18th century frescos by the Galliari brothers; the Dining Room (Sala da Pranzo) in the Gothic style and is covered by a frescoed groin arch; and a bedroom (where Benito Mussolini slept) with several connecting rooms – including a library – with frescoed pavilion ceilings. In the medieval castle’s ancient cellars, it is possible to visit the Museum of Torture with implements and methods from the Inquisition.

Castello di Mazzè 

Storia
Il castello si erge nel centro di Ozegna, piccolo comune del Canavese e, più precisamente occupa il quarto di nord-ovest dell'antico ricetto di Ozegna.

Le origini di Ozegna sono incerte; secondo i principali studiosi, la fondazione potrebbe essere avvenuta nel IV secolo d.C., opera di Flavio Eugenio, imperatore dell’Impero Romano di Occidente, prendendo il suo nome; nome che poi si sarebbe trasformato in Augenia, poi Eugenia, poi Usenia, poi Ozena e infine Ozegna; non vi sono comunque reperti archeologici o documenti che possano testimoniare una Ozegna, prima dell'XI secolo.

La prima citazione scritta su Ozegna la si trova in un documento dell’Archivio Vescovile di Ivrea del 15 settembre 1094: atto con cui Uberto, conte del Canavese donò alla Chiesa di S. Maria di Ivrea e alla Chiesa del Salvatore in Torino, il Castello di san Giorgio e altri feudi tra cui "Lusilam (oggi Lusigliè), sine Ozena (oggi Ozegna)”: «Ideoque ego qui supra Ubertus dono in eodem eclesie Sancte Marje per miso episcopo Ogerio adque preposito canonice Domini Saluatorjs que est constructe infra eiuitate Taurjui; nominative castro uno qui uoeatur Sancti Gorcij. et villas que ad ipsum castrum pertinet. Coceli; et Cevarjo; et Corterezo. et Cicuno; et Lusilam. sine Ozena. et Musobole. et quantum ad ipsam curtem pertinet»

Nel 1259, in seguito a una divisione di beni e diritti tra Giovanni e Oberto di Rivarolo dei conti di San Martino, le terre e i beni di Ozegna furono assegnati a quest'ultimo.

La più antica citazione sul castello, la troviamo invece nel«De bello canepiciano» scritto da Pietro Azario nel 1363; qui viene nominato, per la prima volta, il castellum di Ozegna, come appartenente ai Conti di Biandrate, insieme con il Castello di San Giorgio, Castello di Orio, Caluso, San Benigno, Volpiano con castello, Castello di Brandizzo, Borgo di San Giorgio, Castello di Cuceglio, Castello di Foglizzo, Castello di Montalenghe.

Da questo momento la storia di Ozegna e la storia del suo Castello sono un tutt'uno.

Una successiva citazione del Castello la troviamo in un documento del 1373 (Archivio di Stato di Torino) con cui Amedeo VII, conte di Savoia, investe Giacomo di San Giorgio, conte di Biandrate della metà “de’ castelli e luoghi di San Giorgio e Ozegna”.

Erano anni di continue guerre e gli abitanti di Ozegna chiesero protezione al conte Gottifredo di Biandrate, che dimorava nel vicino Castello di San Giorgio, che accetto, obbligandosi gli Ozegnesi, (come scrive, nel 1845, Goffredo Casalis) "di ampliare il castello, di erigere un fortalizio e di dotarlo di valide mura, come fecero essi appunto nell'anno 1432... Tra le opere di fortificazione che vennero eseguite, eravi un alto portone con ponte levatojo, che poi servì di campanile e di albo pretorio. sorgeva esso appunto nel luogo, dove ora s'innalza la facciata della nuova chiesa parrocchiale" (qui va precisato che il Casalis è impreciso in quanto le opere di fortificazioni che lui cita nel Dizionario storico-geografico e più precisamente il portone e il ponte levatoio non possono essere riferiti al Castello ma all'intero Recetto, non essendo coerenti con le antiche mappe catastali di Ozegna).

Ma tutto questo lavoro non servì a nulla, perché nell'anno seguente (1433), nell'ambito della ennesima guerra che vedeva coinvolti i Visconti di Milano, il Ducato di Savoia e il Marchesato del Monferrato, essendo i conti di Biandrate alleati del marchese del Monferrato, il duca Amedeo VIII di Savoia mandò il condottiero Teobaldo d’ Avanchier, a espugnare il Castello di Ozegna.

Fatta la pace tra Savoia e Monferrato, Ozegna fu ceduto ai Savoia che investirono del feudo il condottiero Teobaldo con tutti i "bona mobilia que in castro Osagnie tempore captionis eiusdem inventa fuerunt"

Nel 1473, Lodovico Eusebio e Claudio, figli di Teobaldo, vendettero Il feudo di Ozegna a Jacopo dei conti S. Martino di Agliè, scudiero del duca Lodovico di Savoia.

Nel 1586 Francesco Bernardino dei conti di San Martino ottenne che il feudo di Ozegna divenisse una Contea, assumendo il titolo di conte; titolo che poi passò al figlio Gaspare e poi, al figlio di quest’ultimo Bonifacio che è importante ai fini della storia del Castello..

Bonifacio dei conti di San Martino e Conte di Ozegna, che «fu nelle armi di grande valore e nella trattazione di negozi di grande prudenza. Il Duca (Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia) lo mandava suo Ambasciatore presso la corte di Madrid, quindi all’Imperatore, e poi al papa Innocenzo IX » è l’autore, intorno al 1595, dell'ampliamento apportato al Castello, per renderla una confortevole «residenza signorile» nell'aspetto attuale.

Bonifacio, come Ambasciatore del Ducato di Savoia, fu sicuramente spettatore di importanti momenti della fine della «Guerre di Religione» che si concluse con l’abiura dal protestantesimo da parte di Enrico IV di Borbone («Parigi val bene una messa»), avvenuta nel 1593, e la sua successiva incoronazione a re di Francia, avvenuta nel 1594.

Le due scene (abiura e incoronazione), insieme con altre scene riferite a quel periodo di guerra in Francia, si trovano affrescate nelle pareti del salone del piano nobile del Castello, dal che si può presumere che Bonifacio, rientrato in patria dopo le sue attività di ambasciatore, abbia abbellito il Castello, per trasformarlo in residenza e abbia voluto affrescarlo con scene di avvenimenti a cui aveva partecipato, da parte di maestranze fiamminghe, comprensibile dallo stile degli affreschi.

Alla morte del Conte di Bonifacio, senza figli maschi, il Castello e il titolo fu ereditato dalla figlia Elisabetta che aveva sposato Conte Faraone Solaro dei conti di Moretta.

Interessante, relativamente a tale eredità, è che essa fu permessa di una specifica patente, che Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia aveva concesso "al Conte Bonifacio di San Martino e dei signori di Agliè e Ozegna, cavaliere della Gran Croce della religione dei santi Maurizio e Lazzaro, di poter trasmettere in feudo di Ozegna alle figlie femmine in mancanza di eredi maschi"

Il Castello fu però di fatto abbandonato e incominciò un lento e lungo declino, che ha avuto però il pregio di evitare interventi successivi distruttivi, come purtroppo successo a molti altri castelli del Canavese.

Nel 1764 fu ceduto a Carlo Emanuele III di Savoia, passò poi, per asse ereditario, ai Savoia, Duchi di Chiablese e da questi ai Duchi di Savoia-Genova.

Nel 1845 Goffedo Casalis, nel suo Dizionario storico-geografico già citato, così lo descrive: "In Ozegna sta tuttora in piè un vecchio castello, con doppia galleria a soffitto. con tre torri quadrale guarnite di merli verso tramontana, e con un'altra rotonda sul davanti, con fregi in rilievo sui mattoni delle fasce dell'edifizio, e di qualche finestra a sesto . acuto, con entro sale spaziose, in cui si vedono cammini amplissimi, ed a forme bizzarre, con volte rabescate, e con impiallacciature, dove si scorgono ancora dipinti che rappresentano alcuni fatti di storia illustrati con leggende, di cui ancora esiste qualche brano. Tutto questo edifizio è ora pressoché abbandonato, perché minaccia rovina; e più non serve che di casa rustica per masserizia e per granai"

Nel 1868 Antonino Bertolotti, nel suo Passeggiate nel Canavese, lo descrive allo stesso modo, ma aggiunge: "Era questo castello munito di sotterranei, che passando sotto l'alveo dell'Orco, secondo alcuni, comunicava con i castelli di Rivarolo". In effetti, durante i lavori di restauro del 2002-2007, nel fossato prospiciente la facciata a lato est, fu scoperto l'ingresso di un cunicolo, di altezza d'uomo, rivestito in mattoni, che sicuramente portava fuori dal castello, come via di fuga.

Nel 1964 Filiberto di Savoia, duca di Genova lo vendette a un privato del posto, che lo cedette, nel 2001 all'attuale proprietario.

Il Castello è stato dichiarato, in data 4.10.1965, dal’allora Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione (competenze oggi in capo al Ministero dei Beni Culturali) di importante interesse storico-artistico e pertanto sottoposto alle disposizioni di legge che tutelano detti beni.

Nell'anno 2002, sotto il controllo della Soprintendenza ai Beni Monumentali, si è avviato un importante lavoro di "restauro strutturale" e "restauro conservativo degli esterni" (già completati) e di "restauro conservativo degli interni" e "recupero funzionale" (al 2017 solo progettati e approvati dalla Soprintendenza).

Castello di Ozegna

The central core of the building dates from the twelfth century. ; it was built for the family San Martino and it retained its medieval castle appearance until the sixteenth century, with a central tower, a courtyard containing rural buildings, all surrounded by a thick wall and a ditch. In 1667, Count Filippo San Martino commissioned Amedeo di Castellamonte to transform the facade overlooking the garden, the chapel, the two galleries and courtyard. In 1764, another San Marino sold the castle to restore Savoia which made its interior by Ignazio Birago di Borgaro. In 1830, we transformed the Italian garden in a romantic garden with a large and small lakes with islands. After several passages of property, the castle was finally sold to the state in 1939. It is now an imposing palaces, pleasing appearance, with two beautiful gardens. The visit can cross very many rooms, features very large castles.

Castello ducale di agliè 

Il castello di Strambino sorge in posizione sopraelevata a nord dell’abitato ed è contraddistinto dall'essere costituito da diversi corpi di fabbrica appartenenti ad epoche diverse, venutisi ad aggregare in tempi successivi a partire dal secolo XI fino al secolo XVII.

Esso è composto essenzialmente da diversi nuclei facilmente individuabili e cioè dalla parte primitiva del castello detto “arduinico” ascrivibile al sec. XI, dalla successiva espansione del castello detto “gotico” la cui edificazione si fa risalire al sec. XIV e dall'ultima espansione del castello le tre dimore signorili risalenti al sec. XVII, le uniche attualmente abitate, che sorgono su preesistenti opere difensive del primitivo castello e poggiano su possenti muraglioni fortificati di cinta inglobanti parchi e giardini.

Il Castello di Strambino è da tempo appartenente ai conti San Martino di Strambino. Ora il castello arduinico del sec. XI, quello gotico del sec. XIV e due delle tre residenze signori del XVII, quella centrale e quella di ponente, appartengono ancora ai discendenti dei San Martino. La dimora signorile di levante è stata invece donata per testamento nel 1870 a Don Bosco che l'ha rivenduta ai marchesi Scarampi di Villanova ed è ora appartenente ai suoi discendenti.

Della primitiva costruzione “arduinica” restano le imponenti e suggestive rovine di un complesso a pianta rettangolare difeso esternamente nel lato meridionale da tre torri rese accessibili all’interno da scale a chiocciola. Anticamente il lato settentrionale era contornato da un profondo fossato difensivo, ormai colmato. La torre centrale, alta 18 metri, presenta finestre impreziosite da cornici in cotto ed è conclusa da un coronamento a merli ghibellini parzialmente chiusi che delimitano sei finestre aperte a giro d’orizzonte. All’ambiente sommitale, coperto, si accede tramite un mezzo giro di scala esterna.

Il castello “arduinico” di Strambino, menzionato negli atti coevi del 1161 quale rocca importante nella difesa contro il Comune di Vercelli, in continua lotta di supremazia con i signori del luogo, è sede per tutto il 1300 delle lotte intestine fra i Conti del Canavese, i San Martino e i Valperga, appoggiati i primi dai Savoia e i secondi dal Marchese del Monferrato e dai Visconti di Milano. Nel 1361 l’abitato di Strambino viene assaltato dalle truppe di Giovanni II del Monferrato che incendia le case e fa strage dei suoi abitanti per ritorsione contro la loro strenua resistenza; il castello subisce un lungo assedio, viene in parte danneggiato ma resiste e non può essere conquistato soprattutto per la tenacia del conte Bartolomeo San Martino, come ricorda il cronachista Pietro Azario nel “De Bello Canapiciano”, libro prezioso e unico che tratta delle vicende storiche del Canavese dal 1312 al 1367. Qualche anno dopo, nell'agosto del 1386, scoppia in Canavese una furiosa rivolta del popolo contro l’aristocrazia in generale e contro i filo-savoiardi Conti San Martino in particolare e il castello di Strambino subisce alcuni gravi danni e devastazioni da parte dei rivoltosi detti “tuchini”. Questi fatti determinarono, presumibilmente, l’edificazione di un secondo edificio castellano e il contemporaneo, progressivo abbandono del castello “arduinico”.

Il secondo corpo di fabbrica, databile appunto alla fine del secolo XIV, è definito tradizionalmente castello “gotico”, in ragione della decorazione delle porte e delle finestre e di una fascia in cotto che corre a metà altezza sulla facciata meridionale della costruzione realizzata secondo il gusto e la tipologia propria di tale stile. Il castello “gotico” sorge a sud del castello “arduinico”, dal quale è separato tramite una corte interna acciottolata. Presenta una pianta di forma rettangolare su cui si innesta, sul lato settentrionale, una torre quadrata servita da una scala a chiocciola di accesso al primo e secondo piano del castello stesso.

Testimone di innumerevoli avvenimenti storici locali, il castello “gotico” fu interessato da varie e alterne vicende belliche: il conte Reynerio San Martino di Strambino nel 1409 ottiene vittoriosa difesa del castello e del paese di Strambino contro la compagnia di ventura di Facino Cane; il capitano Cesare Maggi, comandante delle truppe spagnole nelle guerre tra imperiali e francesi, nel 1537 conquista Strambino e assalta il castello; le truppe francesi del conte Henry d’Harcourt, nel 1641 danneggiano per rappresaglia il castello di Strambino, avendo il conte Gerolamo San Martino di Strambino ospitato il principe Tommaso di Savoia, che con lui si era schierato nella lotta tra “Principisti” e “Madamisti”.

Dopo tali avvenimenti, i conti San Martino di Strambino, ampliandosi la famiglia e mutando i tempi, decisero l’edificazione di altri corpi di fabbrica a sud dei castelli medievali. Vennero pertanto erette le tre dimore signorili, le uniche attualmente abitate, la cui datazione al secolo XVII è confermata dall’iscrizione 1687 indicata sulla decorazione di una finestra del corpo centrale. I corpi di fabbrica seicenteschi sorgono su preesistenti opere difensive dei primitivi castelli e poggiano su possenti muraglioni fortificati di cinta inglobanti parchi e giardini.

I caratteri tipologici propri dell’epoca di edificazione dei vari complessi risultano talvolta modificati in parte dai rimaneggiamenti d’uso. Tuttavia, non è mai stata snaturata l’unitarietà sostanziale del castello, proprietà tramandata di padre in figlio dell’antica famiglia San Martino dei Conti Canavesani.

Castello di Strambino

Castello di Moncrivello History
The Castle of Moncrivello dei Marchesi del Carretto is a medieval fortification located in a strategic position. Over time, it has been transformed and still retains all the refinement of a noble residence.
The history of the castle sinks its origins until the year one thousand and the bitter medieval clashes between Guelphs and Ghibellines are part of its memories. Federico Barbarossa entrusted him to the control of the episcopate of Vercelli in 1152. It was then disputed by the Marquises of Monferrato, who took possession of it in 1243. Returned to the hands of the Vercellese church in 1300, it became a fief of the Fieschi family of the Bishops following the papal investiture of Boniface IX in 1394.
In the XIII century Moncrivello already had a fortified fortress and, although it was sold to the town of Vercelli, it remained under the jurisdiction of the Vercelli diocese. In 1399, after a brief period of hegemony by Antonio Fieschi - of the Fieschi family of Genoa - unhappy to the point of provoking the onset of the people of the village, the jurisdiction passed to the Savoy, in the person of Amedeo VIII.
At that time the stronghold maintained essentially a military role. The large quadrangular tower has been preserved from this period, with ornate windows in terracotta and machicolations, which, crossed by a driveway, leads into the courtyard of the castle.
It was the energetic Iolanda di Savoia, also known as Iolanda di Francia, (1436 - 1478), wife of Amedeo IX of Savoia and daughter of Charles VII of France, who transformed the stronghold into a real noble residence. The castle of Moncrivello became the favorite residence of Jolanda; here the duchess died in 1478.
From this transformation come the boundary walls decorated with dovetail merlons, and inside, the helical staircase, the coffered ceilings, the terracotta fireplaces.
The renovation of the castle commissioned by Jolanda had just ended when the wedding was celebrated between Charles I of Savoy and Bianca di Monferrato (1472 - 1519) who, widowed in 1490 at only eighteen years, was then regent of the Savoy State.
Charles II of Savoy called the Good (1504-1553) donated the castle to his bride, Beatrice of Portugal. With her he finished the period of maximum splendor of the castle: the fights between France and Spain caused its passage in the hands of men of arms; it was then long disputed during the seventeenth century among various Piedmontese noble families.
A memorable episode was in 1650 the battle with which the attack by the Spaniards was rejected, thanks to its robust fortified architecture, and the sacking of Moncrivello was thus avoided.
Passed definitively in 1692 to the Del Carretto family, it remained there until 1817 (or 1825) when the castle suffered a devastating fire. Then began a long period of degradation, completed in 1972 when it was rebuilt by private individuals.
From 1972 began the restoration by the Cav. Giovanni De Francisco who allowed to open the castle to visits, cultural events and ceremonies. The castle can be visited today and is used for cultural initiatives and tourism promotion. Castello di Moncrivello

In the sixties of the seventeenth century, Amedeo di Castellamonte, First Architect of the Savoy and author of the Venaria, inherited from an uncle the ruins of the castle and rebuilt them as his home.

The architect of His Highness reshaped the white palace between them thirteenth-century walls and fifteenth-century towers, on the outline of the ancient medieval building that the ancestors counts of Castellamonte, descendants of King Arduino, they had built around the year one thousand.

In the 1066 the life of the castle is already documented on the promontory that dominates the whole Canavese, protected by the long wall around which the village developed over the centuries.

In the mid-nineteenth century they were i Counts of San Martino to add the feature Red Tower style neo-Gothic, making it decorate with the red earth typical of Castellamonte.

The history of the Castellamonte Castle
The first news are documented by the 1066, but the structure had already existed in previous decades: they were the descendants of Arduino, Marquis of Ivrea and then King of Italy, the Counts of Castellamonte that transformed it into one of the most complex fortified structures in the Canavese area.

Along the wall of the castle, where they were opened seven doors still visible today, and the road that ran there developed the country, which took its name from its castle.

During the fifteenth and fifteenth centuries the Counts of Castellamonte divided into various lines and branches, which to differentiate themselves assumed the "agnomies", as Cagnis, Cognengo, Aimone, Della Porta, Merlo ... and they managed the great fiefdom through the institute of the feudal consortium.

The countryside of Castellamonte it was divided into 271 "Jurisdiction points", which the various branches of the family exercised according to a three-year rotation. From the Cognengo branch were born Carlo di Castellamonte (Turin, 1560 - Turin, 1641) and his son Amedeo di Castellamonte (Castellamonte, 1618 - Turin, 1683), who were both architects of the Savoy.

The primitive castle was destroyed during the Tuchinaggio in the revolt of the Tuffets of the 1383-1387, during the Canavese war, which devastated the region from the 1339: i Castellamontein fact, allies of the Saint martin, supported by Savoy, were placed under siege by the Valperga and their allies, the Marquises of the Monferrato, which tried to expand in the area. Only in the 1387 Challant's Ibleto, posted by Amadeus VIII of Savoy, managed to bring calm and la "Pax sabauda".

The castle was rebuilt at the beginning of the fifteenth century: of that time remain the tower-door of the wall, the tower-door of entrance to the castle and the general layout of the castle, with i four buildings sprung up around the access road. The two buildings to the north contain various testimonies of the period.

Further devastation occurred in the first half of the sixteenth century, during the wars between the French and the Spanish, during the incursion of Marshal de Brissac in Canavese of January 1552.

Starting from the mid-nineteenth century, the accounts of San Martino di Sale and Castelnuovo, which had moved from the 1611 to Castellamonte becoming its consignori, bought the entire property of the castle and replaims various parts.

During the twentieth century from the San Martino passed by inheritance to the Count Ricardi di Netro.

Castle of Castellamonte

Borgomasino is located on a hilly position, a few kilometers from Turin, with a great view of the morainic amphitheater and over the plains of Canavese. Placed at the border between the lands of Ivrea and Vercelli, Borgomasino has two castles built for defensive reasons: the castrum vetus, in town and the castrum novum in the hamlet of Torrazzo, of which only the ruins remain. A description of the castle's structure is preserved in a 1757 blueprint by the Turin architect Tommaso Prunotti. Seriously damaged from an 1818 cave-in, the castle was divided up: one area was given to the nuns for a pre-school and another part was given to the Parish Church di San Salvatore. Around 1870, Luigi Valperga di Masino had the structure transformed into a residential villa using the design of the Turin architect Siniscalchi. The castle remained with the Valperga counts until the end of the 1980's, when it was purchased and restored the present day owners. The castle, brought back to its original splendor thanks to careful restructuring, has become a magnificent 19th century villa, immersed in an age-old park. A medieval tower with a square layout and a rustic wing are what remain of the original structure.

Castello di Borgomasino

This is s complex consisting of two buildings, built between the 12th and the 14th century and restructured in the 19th century. The Old Castle (Castello Vecchio) built by the Valperga still has many traces of its medieval origins, while the new castle (Castello Nuovo), thanks to the restoration carried out by Alfredo D'Andrade, has taken on a Baroque look and is today the seat of a Contemporary Art Center â€“ a major reference point at a European level â€“ where internationally known artists exhibit their work. The Old Castle still has two corner towers, one of which is very high and crenellated with Gothic terracotta windows. The New Castle was radically transformed in 1835 with the addition of a new wing. The contrast between ancient architecture and modern art makes the Rivara Castle (Castello di Rivara) the perfect setting for shows dedicated to modern artists, as is demonstrated by the one-man shows of following artists: Jurgen Drescher, Paul McCarthy, Luigi Ottani, Lari Pittman, Charles Ray, Oliviero Toscani, and Jeffrey Vallance.
