An ancient castle refashioned several times over the centuries, now it appears as an 18th century villa, which was designed by the court architect Francesco Gallo, and is surrounded by a landscaped park in the English style designed by Xavier Kurten.

Maison de plaisance of the Benso of Cavour family, it was the place where the famed statesman was born, trained and worked: in the large Diplomatic Room of 20 metres’ length there were held Cavour’s political meetings, while the library and the archives contain precious historic documents.

These days the castle has been transformed into a home-museum which commemorates the person of Camillo Benso and reveals the lifestyle of the governing classes of Piemonte under the Savoy.

The Castle of Moncalieri is a palace in Moncalieri (Metropolitan City of Turin), Piedmont, in northern Italy. It is one of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 1997.
History
The first structure was a fortress built by Thomas I of Savoy around 1100 on a hill, to command the main southern access to Turin. In the mid-15th century Yolanda of Valois, wife of Duke Amadeus IX, turned it into a pleasure residence. Architect Carlo di Castellamonte enlarged the construction substantially, and the interiors were redesigned by him and other local artists.

The castle was the site of the marriage between Maria Vittoria Francesca of Savoy to the Prince of Carignano. It was also the place where Maria Carolina of Savoy married Anthony of Saxony by proxy in 1781.

It was the scene of the death of Maria Antonietta of Spain in 1785; she was the wife of Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia. Victor Amadeus would later die there in 1796.

The castle was used extensively by the Savoyards, and was the first castle occupied in 1798 by the French armies, who retained it until 1814. Returned to Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia and later to his distant nephew Charles Albert of Sardinia, Prince of Carignano, it became the residence of young family princes who studied here. King Victor Emmanuel II preferred it to the Royal Palace of Turin, and had numerous apartments furnished according to his tastes. In 1849, it was from this palace that emerged the famous Proclamation of Moncalieri, written by Massimo D'Azeglio and signed by the king Vittorio Emmanuel II.

The palace was later was used by the Queen Mothers and royal princesses. Since 1921 it has been the home of the 1st Battalion of the Carabinieri, but the historical rooms can be freely visited.

On April 5, 2008, a fire broke out in the castle,[1] damaging one of the towers and the hall of the proclaim.

Overview
The current structure of the castle is in the shape of a horseshoe facing south, with four massive square towers at each angle. The side sections have fived floors, brick walls and robust buttresses. Two other minor buildings parallel the side sections and create two courts. The southern façade has a giardino all'italiana and two small cylindrical towers, last remains of the 15th-century castle. The northern entrance has also a notable belvedere.

Moncalieri Castle

Il castello Della Rovere è un palazzo rinascimentale cinquecentesco sito nel comune di Vinovo, della città metropolitana di Torino, in Piemonte. Proprietà del comune, è tuttora in uso.
Storia e descrizione
Si tratta di un palazzo di stile rinascimentale eretto fra il 1480 ed il 1517 in sostituzione di un palazzotto di minori dimensioni adibito a fortezza difensiva. Esso fu costruito su disegno dell'architetto Baccio Pontelli e prospetta sull'attuale piazza Rey. Della sua costruzione, voluta dalla famiglia omonima, fu sponsor e finanziatore il cardinale Domenico della Rovere, originario di Vinovo. Recentemente restaurato, il castello contiene all'interno pregevoli stucchi e dipinti a grottesca della scuola del Pinturicchio ed un bel chiostro con decorazioni in cotto. Con l'estinzione della famiglia Della Rovere, il castello passò nel 1692 alla corona sabauda e Carlo Emanuele II, assegnando il titolo di conte di Vinovo al figlio (illegittimo) che aveva avuto nel 1712 da Gabriella di Mesmes des Marolles, Francesco Agostino, gli diede in concessione anche il castello. Tuttavia la concessione del castello tornò alla corona nel 1732, visto che l'ultimo erede della famiglia Delle Lanze aveva scelto la carriera ecclesiastica (si trattava del futuro cardinale Carlo Vittorio Amedeo Delle Lanze (1712 – 1784), figlio di Francesco Agostino e di Barbara Piossasco di Piobesi). In quell'anno il Re cedette il castello all'Ordine Mauriziano, che nel diciottesimo secolo lo ristrutturò, aggiungendo un piano alla struttura, che contava allora solo un piano oltre a quello terreno.

Castello Della Rovere (Vinovo)

The Castle of Carmagnola in Clusane is located on the promontory west of the old part of town and dominates the entire south area of the lake. It looks like a big and massive defensive structure with a square courtyard, around the walls you can see the deep moat with characteristic arched stone bridges that pass over. The revenues of the fortress are two: one on the east side and the other on the west where there was a drawbridge and towers outpost now completely disappeared.

There are few papers dealing with the origin of this particular palace-castle: the first structure is attributed to Ysei landowners in the area, who built this building in the fourth century, perhaps in an early medieval fortified castrum apparently, in the eleventh century, the lombard family Mozzi.

The documents show that in 1412 the property was passed to Malatesta and later, in 1427, the Republic of Venice after the confiscation of the property of Ysei. The imposing structure was given the following year Francis Bussone said “Carmagnola” for his services as commander of the army of terra firma. The great leader became lord of the castle for four years, as in 1432, considered a traitor by the Venetians, was executed in the Piazza San Marco in Venice and its assets sold to private individuals.

The Castle of Carmagnola in Clusane was later bought by the noble family of Brescia, Sala, who undertook undergone major changes to make it residence in accordance with the Renaissance models. Was opened on the east side a loggia with 14 spans supported by stone columns and frescoed the strip that runs along the roof, and there remains no sign of the stone coat of arms of the family room, reported on nineteenth-century texts.

Changes from the sixteenth century are also evident in the inner courtyard with a well, portico and loggia. Through various marriages, the castle was then divided into dowry among various families. In 1641, owning families Soncini, Maggi, Coradelli and Lana. Each family rearranged their needs living quarters and were modified so many important features of military footprint of the building.

Today the family Bosio brought the building back to its former glory with the help of the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape in the provinces of Brescia, Cremona and Mantova.

The Castle of Carmagnola 

The Castle of Valentino (Italian Castello del Valentino) is a historic building in the north-west Italian city of Turin. It is located in Parco del Valentino, and is the seat of the Architecture Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Turin. It is one of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997.

History
The ancient castle was bought by Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy on the advice of Andrea Palladio. The name Valentino, first mentioned in 1275, seems to derive from a saint called Valentine whose relics were venerated in a church which stood nearby.
The current structure is due to Princess Christine Marie of France (1606–1663), wife of Victor Amadeus I, who dwelt here from 1630. Architect Carlo di Castellamonte renovated the construction substantially, with the help of his son Amedeo. Works started around 1633 and lasted until 1660.

It has a horseshoe shape, with four rectangular towers, one at each angle, and a wide inner court with a marble pavement. The ceilings of the false upper floors are clearly in transalpino (i.e. French) style. The façade sports a huge coat of arms of the House of Savoy.

Minor modifications were made in the early nineteenth century; at this time, too, much of the seventeenth-century furniture was carried off by French troops. For the next half century the palace was more or less abandoned and fell into a state of disrepair. Renovations were carried out in 1860 when it was selected as the seat of the engineering faculty of Turin; it has been further restored in recent years.

Today it is the central building of the Architecture faculty of the Polytechnic University of Turin.

Castello del Valentino

Palazzo Madama e Casaforte degli Acaja is a palace in Turin, northern Italy. It was the first Senate of the Italian Kingdom, and takes its traditional name from the embellishments it received under two queens (madama) of the House of Savoy.
At the beginning of the first century BC, the site of the palace was occupied by a gate in the Roman walls from which the decumanus maximus of Augusta Taurinorum (the ancient name of Turin) departed. Two of the towers, although restored, still testify to this original nucleus. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the gate was used as a fortified stronghold in the defences of the city.
Later the building became a possession of the Savoia-Acaja, a secondary branch of the House of Savoy; in the early 14th century, they enlarged it into a castle. A century later Ludovico of Acaja rebuilt it in square shape, with an inner court and a portico, and four cylindrical towers at each corner. The form of this edifice is still clearly recognizable from the back section of the palace. After the extinction of the Acajas, the edifice became a residence for guests of the house of Savoy.
In 1637 the regent for Duke Charles Emmanuel II, Christine Marie of France, chose it as her personal residence. She commissioned the covering of the court and a revamping of the inner apartments. Sixty years later another regent, Marie Jeanne of Savoy, who was known as 'Madama Reale', lived in the palace. She conferred upon it definitively the nickname of Madama (Italian for Madame). She invited many artists to renovate the building which the duchess wanted to turn into a sumptuous royal palace. The artist Domenico Guidobono became the undisputed protagonist of the decorations of the halls on the first floor of Palazzo Madama, known as the Guidobono halls – the Madama Reale’s Chamber, the Chinese Cabinet, and the Southern Veranda. The duchess also asked architect Filippo Juvarra to design a new Baroque palace in white stone, but the works halted in 1721 after only the front section had been completed.

Later the palace had various uses, and housed the headquarters of the provisional French government during the Napoleonic Wars. In the 19th century King Charles Albert selected it as seat of the Pinacoteca Regia, the royal art gallery, and, later, of the Subalpine Senate (the Parliament of the Kingdom of Sardinia) and of the High Court. Since 1934 it has housed to the City Museum of Ancient Art.


A defiant monument to the Sardinian troops, erected by Milanese exiles during the triumphant visit to Milan of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, 15 January 1857, stands before the Palazzo Madama.
Overlooking Piazza Castello, the section built by Juvarra (illustration, right) constitutes today a scenographic façade a single bay deep, screening the rear part of the edifice, which has remained unchanged (illustration, above right). On the exterior, Juvarra expressed what was intended as a magnificent architectural preamble to an edifice that was never built, as a high-ceilinged piano nobile with arch-headed windows, which is linked to a mezzanine above it by a colossal order of pilasters of a Composite order. Each pilaster stands on a sturdy and formal fielded channel-rusticated base against the ashlar masonry of the ground floor. The central three bays are emphasised by the bolder relief offered by full columns attached to the façade, which is returned inward behind them to afford a vast glass-fronted central interior space like a glazed loggia. Their prominence is emphasised by the tall socles on which they stand, carved with trophies of arms in relief. In the flanking triple bays, each central bay is broken slightly forwards, given its window a deeper, more shadowed reveal within the depth of the wall; its two outer giant pilasters overlap the main order as if that continued behind them. On either side the bays' windows are set together within a slightly recessed panel, thus there are three layered planes to the façade. The dentiled cornice supported on bold consoles in the frieze breaks forward over the central columns and subtly over the central bays of the flanking sections as well. A conforming balustrade decorated with vases and statues in white marble surmounts the façade.

Palazzo Madama (Turin)

Il castello di Bardassano si trova nell'omonima frazione di Gassino Torinese, in provincia di Torino a 18 km dal capoluogo.
Storia
Il castello fu costruito nell'XI secolo ed è ottimamente conservato. Durante il dominio chierese fungeva da prigione. La fortezza era posta di fronte al castello di Tortonito, chiamato anche il Castellone, che fu distrutto nel 1397 dai monferrini guidati da Facino Cane[senza fonte]. La tradizione locale lo considerava già importante ed esistente all'epoca dell'assedio di Chieri da parte del Barbarossa, il quale vi avrebbe soggiornato dopo la distruzione della cittadina avvenuta nel 1156. Il castello ebbe la funzione di baluardo chierese contro le ingerenze del Monferrato.
l nucleo principale è formato da un possente edificio in mattoni, con torri angolari tonde e mastio a filo di cortina, al quale in una fase successiva fu aggiunto un complesso di fabbrica priva di torri, sporgente rispetto al nucleo precedente. I maggiori restauri si ebbero nel Seicento con la trasformazione di parti delle fortificazioni esterne in terrazzi a giardino: si notano una scalinata marmorea che conduce a un cortile in stile rinascimentale, i saloni del piano terra con decorazioni lignee e dipinti risalenti allo stesso periodo.

Un restauro più recente fu curato da Carlo Nigra.

Castello di Bardassano

Il Palazzotto Juva è una dimora storica sita nel comune di Volvera.

Storia
Il Palazzotto Juva sorge nella Cascina Pascolo Nuovo situata nel comune di Volvera, presso la strada provinciale verso Airasca. Le prime testimonianze storiche della Cascina del Pascolo Nuovo risalgono al 1628: infatti, il Luglio di detto anno, con istrumento rogito Vernetti, la comunità di Volvera vende al Conte Urbano Piossasco Folgoris di Scalenghe del fu Conte Ottavio, una Cassina della Margheria ossia del Pasco, di giornate 215 situata “sulle fini di Ayrasca e Volvera”.

Il Conte Urbano Piossasco Folgoris di Scalenghe è il governatore di Pinerolo che nel 1630 subisce l'assedio francese da parte delle truppe del Cardinale Richelieu ed è costretto a capitolare consegnando la città al nemico. Per motivi rimasti ignoti, o forse soltanto per la caduta della città di Pinerolo, il 7 Luglio 1635 lo stesso Conte Urbano Piossasco vende la Cascina del Pasco al Conte Gettullio Piossasco di Rivalba. Il Conte Gettullio è un archibugiere del duca di Savoia ed è uno dei componenti più significativi della famiglia dei Piossasco perché aveva ricevuto l'alta onorificenza del collare dell'Annunziata dai Savoia.

Il 9 Settembre 1794, un successore del Conte Gettullio vende nuovamente la Cascina all’Opera Pia dell’Albergo di Santa Croce in Villastellone. Tale Opera era stata costituita da un ricco commerciante il quale si occupava delle persone indigenti, procurava loro un lavoro nel suo opificio e li ospitava nell'Albergo, non potendo più gestire la cascina di Volvera nel 1797 la mette in vendita.

Dalla metà del 1700 a quasi tutto l’800 le colture erano ben differenti da quelle odierne, per esempio una vasta zona di campi era destinata alla cultura del riso e veniva chiamata risera in lingua piemontese, e da una mappa del 1746 redatta da Antonio Dompe e deposta nell'archivio comunale di Volvera, davanti alla Cascina era presente un vitigno di ampia estensione.

Nel 1797, l'Albergo di S. Croce in Villastellone vende a Giacomo Pio Juva di Torino l’intera Cascina di 254,18 giornate. Da quel momento, la Cascina del Pasco verrà chiamata Cascina del Pascolo Nuovo, per distinguerla da quella del Pascolo Vecchio ubicata nelle stesse zone. Giacomo Pio Juva, di famiglia oriunda di Cervatto in Valsesia, sposa Maria Domenica Guerini della Vaira, e da lei ha tre figli, Giacomo Celestino, Spirito e Giocondo, Canonico della Cattedrale di Torino o Metropolitana di Torino.

Giacomo Juva fa costruire nel 1810 il palazzotto, la torre merlata e il campanile con la campana e il palazzotto diventa la residenza estiva dei signori Juva. I dipinti murali a tempera in stile neoclassico presenti sulle imposte delle volte dei due saloni a piano terreno rappresentano paesaggi della vallata del Reno con i loro castelli sono attribuiti al pittore Pompeo Mariani che compensava i suoi mecenati l'ospitalità offertagli. La proprietà della cascina rimane della famiglia fino al 1970 quando verrà poi venduta.

Dall'inizio del 1800 il palazzotto inserito nella vecchia cascina diventa una nobile residenza di lusso per la famiglia che trascorrerà le vacanze estive. Al primo piano, a sinistra della scala, vi erano gli appartamenti dei proprietari con i servizi. Dall'altra parte della scala, gli appartamenti per gli ospiti erano separati da quelli della servitù.

Il giardino era costituito da grandi alberi giunti da paesi lontani, da una ghiacciaia di pietre di tufo e conchiglie, un pozzo e l'orto padronale. La parte agricola della Cascina, nella seconda metà del 1800, sarà affittata fino al 1870 a certi margari Brusa, poi alla Famiglia Canavesio, entrati prima in qualità di margari, poi come fittavoli.

Attorno al 1920 la Cascina occupava nei periodi di maggior lavoro circa 40 persone alle vigne e alle risaie erano stati sostituiti campi con coltivazioni di grano, granoturco e prati. La famiglia Canavesio Domenico entrata in mezzadria, è rimasta fino al 1961-1972. L’altra parte dell'azienda agricola è stata affittata.

Negli anni '70 buona parte dei terreni della Cascina Pascolo Nuovo sono stati venduti alla FIAT Ricambi di Volvera (oggi Mopar) per la costruzione dei nuovi stabilimenti. Successivamente una parte della Cascina Pascolo Nuovo è stata affittata, il giardino del Palazzotto è stato utilizzato come deposito di materiali edili, e la vecchia stalla come laboratorio per la costruzione dei filtri delle autovetture.

Il Palazzotto ha poi subito alterne vicende con la presenza di famiglie che abiteranno il primo piano, mentre i saloni affrescati del piano terra sono rimasti sempre chiusi. Il 26/06/1986 la proprietà del Palazzotto Juva passerà dalla Famiglia Sella alla Fondazione d’Arte Sella-Pollone, che raccoglie tutti i beni artistici della famiglia.

Una parte del giardino è stata prima affittata e poi venduta ad una Ditta di autotrasporti. Il 23/03/1987 la Soprintendenza ha apposto il vincolo di Bene Artistico ai sensi della Legge 1089 s.m.i. del 1939, di conseguenza ogni intervento di restauro dovrà avere il parere della Soprintendenza ai Beni Architettonici prima di essere realizzato.

I coniugi Canavesio-Bruno hanno acquistato una porzione della Cascina Pascolo Nuovo nel 1995 e successivamente anche il Palazzotto Juva nel 2002. A partire dall'acquisto, il Palazzotto è stato oggetto di un lento ma laborioso restauro, come il parco che è stato recuperato dopo anni di abbandono. Dal 2003 il Palazzotto Juva è stato riaperto al pubblico ed ospita manifestazioni artistiche.



Palazzotto Juva

The Royal Castle of Racconigi is a palace and landscape park in Racconigi, province of Cuneo, Italy. It was the official residence of the Carignano line of the House of Savoy, and is one of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy included by UNESCO in the World Heritage Sites list.
History
The first records of the castle are from around the year 1000, when Bernardino of Susa rebuilt an ancient manor, leaving it to Cistercian monks.

The castle was a possession of the margraves of Saluzzo and others starting in the 13th century, and in the 16th century was acquired by the House of Savoy. In 1630, Duke Charles Emmanuel I granted it to his nephew Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano, founder of the Savoy-Carignano line. At this time, the castle was a high brick moated fortress with a square plan, four corner towers and a tall donjon (mastio) on one side.

Architecture
Emanuele Filiberto, Prince of Carignano, Tommaso's son, in the late 17th century, commissioned Guarino Guarini to transform the fortress into a pleasure residence. The architect erected the current central section where the court was, adding a pagoda-like roof. The two northern towers were replaced by pavilions with dome roof and square plan, provided with white marble lanterns. The gardens were also created.

In the late 18th century, Ludovico Luigi Vittorio of Carignano ordered a renovation of the interiors, enlarging the two southern towers, adding stucco and other neoclassical decoration; he also commissioned a new entrance, with 4 Corinthian columns and a triangular fronton, and the great staircase.
Charles Albert, a Carignano who eventually became King of Sardinia, further enlarged and embellished the castle to represent the splendour of the newly acquired reign. His court architect Ernesto Melano expanded the ancient square structure around the central section, added two side buildings connected to the façade pavilions, as well as another staircase on the southern side.

Here the last King of Italy, Umberto II, was born in 1904. Having received the castle as a wedding present in 1930, he proceeded to install in it the family gallery of some 3,000 paintings and historical documents regarding the Shroud of Turin.

Castello Orsini

Il castello di Rivalta è un castello risalente all'anno 1000 che sorge a Rivalta di Torino, in Piemonte. Fu fondato sopra un rialzo di terreno sovrastante la vicina campagna.
Descrizione
Ha l'aspetto di una grande fortezza circondata da mura di pietra e da un fossato, ora asciutto, per oltrepassare il quale c'era un ponte levatoio che, in caso di pericolo era sollevato. Oggi al suo posto c'è un ponte in muratura, che porta all'ingresso dello stesso castello.

Il robusto portone si trova alla base di una torre merlata. Attorno al castello c'è un ampio parco tutto racchiuso nelle mura.

Storia
Il primo nucleo fortificato di Rivalta fu l'incastellamento che caratterizzò tutta l'Italia settentrionale. All'interno di esso prese sviluppo il progetto del marchese di Torino Olderico Manfredi, che consisteva nel trasformare in un principato territoriale quel che era stato un potere di giurisdizione pubblica.

Dal Mille all'Ottocento
Il più antico documento in cui si fa cenno a Rivalta risale al 1016 e riguarda la donazione di un feudo: venne eseguita da Oddone, figlio del marchese Manfredo, a vantaggio del monastero femminile di san Pietro di Torino. Invece il primo cenno sul castello risale al 1029, ed è relativo alla donazione dei beni situati in Ripalta: questa donazione fu elargita dal marchese Olderico e dalla di lui moglie Berta al monastero di San Giusto di Susa, da loro stessi fondato.

Nel 1176 Federico Barbarossa saccheggiò Rivalta, per mezzo del suo secondo, per punire il Signor Risbaldo il cui figlio Olrico prendeva la parte dei Conti di Savoia e per il Papa.

Fatta la pace nel 1185 tra Papa e il Barbarossa, il possesso di Rivalta ritornò ad Olrico. Il 28 ottobre 1186 il vescovo di Torino prese possesso del feudo rivaltese, che teneva ben circondato da soldati e cavalieri. Nel 1195 Olrico vide un ulteriore distruzione di Rivalta per la guerra tra il vescovo Arduino di Valperga e il comune di Torino con vari signorotti rivaltesi: Rivalta fu ancora distrutta da il re Enrico. In seguito a questo il castello non si poté riedificare sino al 1229.

È certo che gli Orsini nel 1100 erano già una famiglia nobile potente, probabilmente proveniente da qualche straniero dove ottenne il feudo rivaltese per ricompensa di servizi militari. La storia dei signori di Rivalta s'inserisce in quella dei Savoia, nel 1097 Umberto scende in Italia dalla valle di Susa mentre in Piemonte le famiglie aristocratiche della valle di Susa si stringono intorno a lui.

Il primo luglio 1149 Rinsaldo signore di Rivalta strinse un patto con i cittadini di Torino in cui s'impegnava a combattere in loro favore contro chiunque, eccetto che si trattasse dei Consignori di Trana, suoi cugini. Già nel 1062 esisteva, nel luogo denominato Ripalta, un castrum costituito da una torre, a cui se ne aggiunsero successivamente delle altre, e di un sistema di difesa fortificato: le mura, il fossato, un corso d'acqua. Il fenomeno dell'incastellamento aveva preso avvio, durante il X secolo, nell'Italia del nord, sia dalle necessità difensive relative alle invasioni degli Ungari e dei Saraceni. Era determinante considerare la posizione strategica del castello rispetto alla porzione di territori sul quale esercitare i propri diritti giurisdizionali. Nel caso di Rivalta le funzioni suddette erano svolte dai signori locali. Questi si fingevano custodi del castello per conto della ontessa Adelaide con il compito di controllare una parte delle tante varianti della via Francigena. Ogni persona che passando su questo territorio attraversava Rivalta doveva sborsare del denaro per il pedaggio. Nel corso dell'XII e XIII secolo i signori di Rivalta, riuscirono, non senza conflitti, ma con molta abilità, a mantenere e consolidare i propri beni. Intenzionati ad aumentare i loro poteri e a tramandarli per via ereditaria, riuscirono ad espandere l'egemonia politica sull'area del percorso stradale che da Avigliana portava a Torino, attraverso la Val Sangone, con l'acquisizione dei diritti sul castello di Reano nel 1233 e, nel 1295, con quelli sul castello di Trana. Intanto altre abitazioni erano sorte intorno al castello. Tanti piccoli tasselli, disposti uno accanto all'altro, formando come un guscio in cui sentirsi protetti. Il castello costituiva in ogni caso il fulcro della circoscrizione territoriale dominata dai signori locali il cui potere era espresso non solo dal possesso della terra, ma anche, dall'esercizio dei diritti politici, amministrativi e giurisdizionali. Nonostante l'emergere, verso la fine del XIII secolo, dell'entità Comunale costituita da ‘'sapiens homini”. Il castello era, oltre che dimora del sovrano, “cassetta di sicurezza per le cose preziose” dove i prodotti della terra erano al sicuro. Il castello svolgeva anche funzione di ricetto, ovvero che, in caso di guerre i cittadini si andavano a rifugiare nel castrum. In seguito allo sviluppo edilizio del castellola popolazione contadina aumentò e allora si costruì nella meta del 300 un ricetto più grande. In accordo con il potere signorile la comunità definiva il perimetro dello spazio da fortificare, costruivate muira, collegandole a quelle del castello, e tre porte attraverso cui entrare ed uscire dal ricetto. Queste porte erano, tutte e tre delle torri, aperte verso l'interno, utili per la difesa ma anche per il controllo del passaggio dei forestieri.

I primi documenti che testimoniano la presenza di un castello su un feudo rivaltese risalgono a un periodo che intercorre dall'anno 1029 1062[non chiaro]. Parlare degli Orsini è indispensabile perché hanno avuto una parte lunga nelle vicende rivaltesi. La loro origine si perde nella notte dei tempi e le ipotesi fatte al riguardo sono del tutto gratuite. IL più attendibile informatore in merito è il Barone Gaudezio Claretta. È certo che nel 1100 era già una famiglia nobile e potente, probabilmente proveniente da qualche straniero arrivato in Piemonte. E ottenne il feudo rivaltese come ricompensa di servizi militari. La loro storia si inserisce a quella dei Savoia. Ma anche in quella del papa, patteggiando per lui e per il conte di Savoia, nel 1176 attirò l'ira di Federico Barbarossa, fu estromesso dalla signoria del luogo che poté riavere soltanto nel 1186.Risbaldo morì nel 1341,e nel 1344 e nel 1346 avviene l'investitura da parte di Amedeo VI di Savoia nel fondo di Reano. Alla morte di Risbaldo tra i due figli Guglielmo e Nicolò.

I signori di Rivalta sino al 1500 non ebbero preoccupazioni circa il cognome essendo in uso fin dall'epoca carolingia che le famiglie nobili aventi signoria su qualche località alla metà dell'XI secolo cominciarono ad usarsi i primi soprannomi quali nomi di famiglia, però quei nobili che signoreggiavano qualche villaggio continuarono a denominarsi dal villaggio: così fecero le più antiche e nobili famiglie piemontesi, quali, ad esempio, Valperga, Morozzo, Piossasco, eccetera. Fra questi abbiamo i signori Rivalta. Trovatisi sempre più a contatto di nobili casati alla corte dei vari principi.[non chiaro] Così nacque la leggenda dell'Orso Orsini.
