Located in a panoramic position overlooking modern Crotone, the first castle structure was probably built by the Byzantines on the Greek acropolis of the ancient Kroton in the 9th century in order to defend the territory against foreign invasion. In the 11th century, at the time of the Norman Conquest, it was fortified by Robert Guiscard and later, in the Angevin period, rebuilt by Charles of Anjou. The castle hosts today the civic Museum opened in 1987.

The Castle of Santa Severina is one of the oldest best-preserved military fortresses in southern Italy. Its construction dates back to the era of Norman domination (XIth century) on a pre-existing fortification of the Byzantine era. After being subjected to a meticulous renovation work from 1994-1998, today the Castle houses the Santa Severina museum, where exhibits of excavations and other archaeological materials and collections coming from the surrounding area are exhibited. In addition, you can also visit the Diocesan Museum and various art exhibitions, artistic handicrafts and concerts.
