Built during the reign of Federico I Barbarossa in the 12th century, as a collection of palaces, this hilltop fortress was likely erected on the site of a prehistoric settlement. During the heydey of the Republic of Venice in the 15th century, it was converted into a military stronghold. After the castle was abandoned in 1598, it was reused as a quarry. Inside the walls, the ruins of the Church of San Michele are still visible. Originally a small Longobard church, it was expanded in the 12th century before being demolished when the castle was expanded. Visitors can also access the 20 meter tower for the best views of the castle and surrounding countryside.
