Ozora is a village in Tolna County, Hungary. It has been notable since the Middle Ages, when Pipo of Ozora built a castle at this site by permission of Sigismund of Hungary in 1416. Arthur Görgei won an important victory at the Battle of Ozora during the 1848 Revolution in this area.

In recent times it has become famous for the O.Z.O.R.A. psychedelic trance festival which has been held on an estate in Ozora every year since 2004. The first party was called Solipse and took place during the Solar eclipse of August 11, 1999.

Reconstruction of the castle ended recently, and now tourists can get acquainted with one of the hidden treasures of Hungary. Tourists spend in the bedroom wife Pipo. In Hungary, every town and every village surprises tourists in their own way. Ozora Pipo Castle, located in the small town of Ozora, differs from other landmarks in Hungary. This is a typical medieval building with an enclosed courtyard, defensive walls, the corners of which are round towers. It was originally built in the Gothic style. Construction went seven years, from 1416 to 1423. Pipo Castle in 1510 was rebuilt in Renaissance style, as evidenced by the courtyard and corridors of the second floor, decorated with stone carvings. For a long time the Turks besieged the castle: they occupied the castle in 1545, and only in 1686 the castle became the new Hungarian. 

The castle was built on the orders of Felipe Scolari, who is known in Hungary under the name of Pipo Ozorai. Pipo was born in Florence, engaged in trade. But in the 15th century, he lived in the city and had a reputation Ozora "favorite" of the king. Once, at a dinner at the King Zhizmonda, who shared the idea of ​​creating a cavalry army to protect the borders of the country from the south. The Simontornya Castle is a Renaissance castle in Simontornya, Hungary.

The Tower was built in the 13th century by Simon (Son of Salamon) among the swamps of the Sió river. The name Simontornya means Simon's Tower. Nearly all owners of the castle made some alterations throughout the centuries. The Lackfi's built a new gothic wing in the 14th century, altered the old Tower, and added an arcaded loggia to the back-front. After the extinction of the House of Garai in 1482, the castle again belonged to Queen Beatrix, wife of Matthias Corvinus.
Mózes Buzlay, marshall of King Ulászló II improved the castle into a renaissance palace with the help of Italian masters and craftsmen from Buda. After Buzlays' death the castle was taken over by the Turks in 1545. This event marked the beginning of a new era with an emphasis on military requirements. During the nearly 150 years of occupation minor alterations and refinements were constantly being made.

Simontornya, the center of a sandjak was recaptured by Louis William, Margrave of Baden-Baden in 1686. In just two years (1702-1704) major alterations turned the castle into a fortress. During the revolution against the Habsburgs, led by Prince Francis II Rákóczi, Simontornya became the stronghold of the Kuruc rebels in southwest Hungary. The fortress was captured by the Austrian army in 1709 housing troops until 1717. The castle fortress was later donated to the House of Limburg-Stirum, but, after building a new a castle, they turned the old one into a barn. It has been used as a barn by all new owners until 1960, when archeological excavations started.

Simontornya Castle

This castle, located in the small village of Dég, is less well-known than the imposing Baroque palace in Keszthely, which also belonged to the Festetics, an old and noble Hungarian family. It was built by Antal Festetics (1764–1853) between 1810 and 1815, designed in the Classicist style by Mihály Pollock, an outstanding architect of the time. Four consecutive generations of Festetics lived here from the early 19th to the mid-20th century.

In the last months of WWII, and in the period after, the castle met the common fate of Hungarian country houses. In 1944–45, the German troops used the building as a military hospital and some of the original furniture was taken away. After the war ended, the Festetics counts were stripped of all their possessions. The castle was then taken over by the Soviets, who caused serious damage by burning and by stealing the remaining furniture and equipment.

Soon after that, the castle was hastily restored and turned into a holiday home for the ministry. From 1954 to 1995 it was used as a Hungarian children’s home. Finally, in 2001 the castle and the park were transferred to The National Trust of Monuments of Hungary. Since then the castle has regained its function as the cultural centre of the village as well as of the wider locality; it regularly hosts concerts and exhibitions by prominent Hungarian artists.

At the moment, the complex is undergoing restoration work. When we got there some friendly workers greeted us, telling us that we could go inside. Seven original rooms in the castle are open to visitors. Even though most of the furniture had been stolen or destroyed, inside were some pieces being exhibited, which managed to somewhat restore the ambiance of the castle during the Festetics family’s time there.
