The castle of Castanet is a French castle built in the 16th century in Pourcharesse near Villefort in Lozère, France.
Overview
The territory of Castanet has its origin of its name (chestnut) in the Occitan language, as Chestnut Trees are the most common tree in the territory. The castle is next to the lake of Villefort, an artificial lake created behind the Villefort's dam, who went bankrupt destroy the castle.
History
The castle was built in 1578 by Jacques Isarn, a noble of Villefort.
This family continued to grow in importance until marriage to a descendant with Marie-Suzanne de Varicourt "Marquise de Villefort", nourish and savior of the future King of France Louis XV. This évent led the family to move to Versailles.
It was sold in 1760 and after the emigration of the last owner, it will be sold as a national asset during the French Revolution.
After that, the castle belonged to farmers.
In 1962, the national company "Electricité de France" decided to build a dam in the valley. So it expropriated the last owners and planned to destroy the castle but the villagers revolted and entered the castle to make an Inventory of Historicals Monuments.
In 1964, E.D.F assign the monument to the Community of communes of Villefort. The castle was reinforced to protect it from dangers of the lake.
In 2000, a terrible fire destroyed the castle but it will be fully restored and will reopen its doors in 2007. The castle provides the setting for exhibitions for the summer period.

During the 11th century, a garrison was built in the village, creating a type of police, designed to ensure the safety of the travellers. To pay for this, some charges were collected, especially toll charges (on all goods or travellers who passed that way), guiding charges (for protection of travellers and goods), cartelage charges (on foodstuffs which were measured a la carte), pulverage charges (when passing flocks raised dust!) and many other charges. Thenceforth La Garde-Guerin established a secular community vassal system, organised according to the headmasters of Knighthood Schools and advocating equal rights and duties for everyone. This phenomenon was unusual in France at that period but was never equalled and grew into the "Chevaliers pariers" (so called because they were equal in rights). Although Aldebert III (Bishop of Mende) could not even know what had occurred there, after several attempts, in 1163, he succeeded in besieging La Garde, leading a group of noblemen whom he had convinced of the excessive cost of the rights and the unfair behaviour of the "Chevaliers pariers". Then, La Garde was put into the care of the Guerin du Tournel Family, which is why the village was called La Garde-Guerin. The "Chevaliers pariers" shared the seigneury and each owned a house with a well. The houses were separated by very narrow "streets" (about 12 inches wide! ) called "Pans du Roi"; this was to delimic their properties, creating independencc, whereby "everyone should look to his own affairs".
In 1258, 31 properties were counted. Even now it is still possible to see same 31 houses ! From 1260 the "Chevaliers pariers" elected 2 a year who took the oath in front of the bishop. They were in charge of the sharing out of the incomes and the upkeep of the way.
In 1367, Louis d'Anjou, Count of Maine, second son of the King of France and lieutenant in Languedoc, instituted a three day's fair for Saint Catherine's day - November 25th - and a market on Mondays.
In 1721 this fair was moved to the 29th of September (Saint Michel's day: patron saint of the village).
3 The history of La Garde Guerin in Lozere (Occitanie)In the 16th century, the Bishop of Mende, Renaud de Beaume, sold his shares in the village to the lord of Morangies who then held the majority. By the end of the 16th century, during the wars of religion, the castle and the village were burnt. The village was immediately rebuilt by the heirs of the "Chevaliers Pariers". Its Renaissance style is called "Regordanien", locally linked to the Regordane Way and to certain architectural features, for example carriage entrances that can be seen in the church street in Villefort and also in other villages located along the Regordane Way.
In 1722, the castle was burnt once again because of the carelessness of a farmer. This happened because the owners preferred to go to Versailles, and let the castle to the farmers who did not take care of it. All the old rights and charges were at last abolished during the French Revolution of 1789.
In 1795, while the castle was in ruins because of the fire, one of the towers fell down on a house and killed most of the inhabitants. The building of the present road began in 1840. The Regordane Way was then only used as a transhumance way, for moving animals to seasonal pastures.
In 1929, the castle, the donjon and the church were listed as Historic Monuments and the village became a registered site.
In 1992, La Garde-Guerin was granted the label of one of the finest villages in France ("Plus Beaux Villages de France").
The Church: Supposedly dating from the 12th century, the church is in a Romanesque Provencal style dedicated to Saint Michel. The barrel vault: is made of freestone.
The crossing of the nave and the apse are supported by a double salient arch which is built on pillars.
The capitals are all different. They are all sculptured, sometimes with designs of leaves, flowers or animals, sometimes with enigmatic biblical people.
The top of the columns are often aderned with a checked pattern.
The chancel: is ornamented by harmonising arches with small columns or simple capitals. Two stained- glass windows let the light in. There is a small tornb cut in the rock under the chancel where the Consuls of the "Pariers" of la Garde were buried.
5 The history of La Garde Guerin in Lozere (Occitanie)The portal: is made of three moulded projections up to the tympan. They are carved in massive stone. The small opening up to the door lights up the altar at sunset.
The bells: One of the bells dates from 1643. They are hung up on the arches and form what is called in French 'clocher-mur", literally "wall steeple". On both sides, we can see some buttresses which support the vault's outward thrust.
The Castle: It is situated on the most north-easterly point of the village, which is the least accessible place, the easiest one to defend. A bishop's organization in 1058 recorded the existence of the castle of la Garde. We can imagine from the ruins that there were successive reconstructions and transformations of the castle during the 16th and 17th centuries, especially during the Religious Wars.
The Tower: The time of its construction is undetermined (between the 12th and the 14th century). It is 21.50 metres high, it is a three storey vaulted tower; the first floor is to store food and the others to live in. There used to be another floor but it has been destroyed.
The Ramparts: Many were demolished to give the village more daylight and the ditches were filled with the stone from the ramparts. Depending on the area, the remaining ramparts can reach 8 to 10 metres high with an average thickness of 1.65 metres. They are constructed of regular sandstone blocks that are blackened by the sun. They were originally surrounded by wide ditches cut into the rock, except at Chassezac where the rarnparts stood on the edge of the cliffs. Lots of them have been rebuilt; from the original period only a few remain.

Château de La Garde-Guérin

Le château du Champ est une maison forte devenue château située à Altier en Lozère, en France.
Le cadre du château du Champ
Le château est situé dans le parc national des Cévennes, sur la commune d'Altier, en Lozère, dans l'ancienne province du Gévaudan et constitue un des prestigieux témoins de l'histoire de cette région.
Il est bâti sur un promontoire rocheux qu'enserre la rivière l'Altier, environ deux kilomètres en amont du village du même nom. Ce château, blotti au fond de la vallée, apparaît comme écrasé par la puissance et la variété des structures rocheuses qui dominent l'ensemble du paysage. En effet, on passe en quelques mètres, du fond de la vallée à 734 m d'altitude, à des sommets et des plateaux de 800 à 1 000 m et plus, le tout cloisonné et compartimenté par les affluents de l'Altier ou les nombreux méandres de cette rivière. Pour autant, le château, dans la recherche d'un site défensif, a été construit sur un éperon rocheux, dans un méandre de la rivière presque fermé, et dans un passage très étroit de la vallée, ce qui avait pour but de rendre toute manœuvre impraticable.
Il dresse ses vieilles tours au sein d'un vallon verdoyant en contrebas de la route qui rejoint Villefort à Mende (D901). La route actuelle qui domine le château est relativement récente : 1835. L'ancienne route royale passait, quant à elle, quelques kilomètres plus haut, sur le plateau, en desservant tout un chapelet de villages et de hameaux (l'Habitarelle, Villespasse, le Bergognon, Pomaret, Cubières, etc.). Le château du Champ est sur le chemin du GR 68 entre Villefort et Le Bleymard. Le GR 44 passe également à proximité du domaine.
Histoire du Champ
L'origine du château remonte à la fin du xiiie siècle. On assure cependant qu'il aurait été construit à l'emplacement d'un ancien camp romain (campus), d'où son appellation.
Il faut savoir que le château du Champ est une propriété familiale, et fut toujours transmis aux héritiers les plus directs, le plus souvent par les femmes, et ce depuis son édification jusqu'à la fin du xiiie siècle. Le château figura depuis sa construction et pour trois générations dans la maison d'Altier (1308-1375), l'une des plus anciennes familles du Gévaudan. Elle s'est éteinte au xive siècle dans une branche de la famille de Borne(remontant elle-même au xie siècle), par le mariage en 1375, du damoiseau Armand de Borne avec Delphine d'Altier, fille unique de Raymond d'Altier. Il en résultera la création d'une nouvelle maison, les Borne d'Altier (1375-1828), solidement implantée au Champ pour une bonne douzaine de générations et porteront les titres de Comte d'Altier et de Marquis du Champ . Après la Révolution, en 1812, le dernier descendant des Borne d'Altier mourut sans postérité après avoir racheté le Champ à sa tante, qui l'avait elle-même racheté à l'administration en 1796 afin qu'il reste toujours dans la famille. La succession, à défaut d'arriver à l'oncle (Charles Elisabeth Michel de Borne d'Altier, émigré à l'étranger en juin 1793), car il n'existait plus civilement, arriva donc au petit cousin Jules de Chapelain, sous-préfet de Marvejols. La famille Chapelain (1812-1905) a conservé la propriété du Champ tout au long du xixe siècle, et entrepris quelques aménagements, comme on le verra par la suite. À la troisième génération des Chapelain, Joseph baron de Chapelain de Gras Saint Sauveur marquis du Champ n'eut que trois filles:L'aînée, Elisabeth qui transmis le nom (1899), se maria à Alfred Gaspard Comte de Gourcy-Récicourt (juriste ancien officier dans les zouaves pontificaux) morte prématurément, ses enfants seront déshérités du château au profit de sa petite sœur, Marie Margueritte mariée à Maurice Raguenet de St Albin et le Champ passa donc successivement aux Raguenet de Saint Albin (1905) puis aux Gourcy-Récicourt qui le rachète à la suite de la faillite des précédents (1919).
Le 29 septembre 1928, Joseph Varin d'Ainvelle qui avait épousé la Comtesse Elizabeth de Gourcy-Récicourt racheta le château du Champ et la partie réduite des biens qui y restent encore attachés, à sa tante Mademoiselle Alix de Gourcy de Chapelain. On constate donc que le Champ reste toujours, depuis près de sept siècles, dans la même famille, et depuis 1928, chez les Varin d'Ainvelle, qui le possèdent toujours. La construction de ce nouveau château, au départ un petit castelet, peut se situer entre 1288 et 1308. Les matériaux de construction ont été le granit, le calcaire et le schiste, ce dernier réservé aux murailles. Ce premier édifice sera largement agrandi et remanié en deux phases. Au xvie siècle tout d'abord, par l'adjonction de l'aile nord, qui joint le bâtiment ouest au donjon, si l'on en juge d'après les fenêtres à meneaux, grandes ouvertures typiques de l'époque de la Renaissance, et ensuite au xviiie siècle par différentes réparations qui furent synonymes de la fin du « vieux » logis féodal défensif. Au xixe siècle, on a crépi les façades, ce qui donne à ce château un côté féerique selon le rythme des saisons et l'incidence du soleil. Ces différents aménagements successifs ont chacun laissé leur empreinte.
Le site du château du Champ sera classé en 1942 et ensuite les façades, les toitures et le parc ont fait l'objet d'une inscription à l'inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques le 14 avril 1965. Ce château appartient aujourd'hui à une personne privée et ne se visite pas. C'est en 1981, devant l'ampleur, l'urgence et le coût des travaux à réaliser, qu'il a été décidé de créer une SCI familiale, avec pour but de restaurer et de faire vivre ce patrimoine.
Architecture du château
Selon Albert Maumène, historien du château du Champ, avant le xve siècle, les constructions de ce castelet, désigné dans les vieux titres sous le nom de « castrum », s'agençaient en deux ailes disposées en équerre ; l'une au sud, l'autre à l'ouest, le tout flanqué de trois tours, deux côté sud, une au centre de la façade ouest et une échauguette à l'angle nord-ouest. Au nord-est et détaché du reste de l'édifice, s'élevait le donjon, avec ses meurtrières, son chemin de ronde et ses mâchicoulis encore bien présents. Une enceinte entourait le vaste terre-plein sur lequel s'élève le château d'une forme trapézoïdale. Deux tours de défense, une à chaque angle nord-ouest et nord-ouest, reliées entre elles par un mur, commandaient l'ensemble au nord. Deux hauts murs de terrasse le fermaient à l'est et à l'ouest, tandis qu'un large fossé le protégeait au sud. Ainsi, la défense était assurée par les remparts dont les trois côtés étaient à pic sur la rivière et par un fossé et une herse, côté sud.
Au xve siècle, il fut procédé à plusieurs adjonctions à l'édifice féodal, notamment l'aile nord, qui relia ainsi le bout de l'aile ouest au donjon, jusqu'alors isolé. Les fenêtres à meneaux que nous voyons encore aujourd'hui s'ouvrir côté nord, semblent dater du xvie siècle. Ainsi l'édifice pris sa forme actuelle dite en « fer à cheval » ou en « U ». En outre, vers 1450, on construisit la tour d'angle intérieure, qui regarde l'est (la cour), plus haute que le donjon, mais dans laquelle se trouve un escalier tournant qui dessert le premier étage et l'étage des combles. Enfin fut édifié un rempart avec une poterne, à l'extrémité des deux ailes, à hauteur du donjon. Ce rempart ferma complètement la cour entre les bâtiments et donna donc au château, un plan en « carré ». Ainsi le château se présentait avec deux enceintes : celle extérieure commandée par ses deux tours de défense au nord et le fossé au sud, et celle intérieure que commandait l'édifice lui-même, avec son donjon et son rempart flanqué de deux tours.
Différentes réparations effectuées vers le milieu du xviiie siècle firent perdre à l'édifice son fort caractère féodal. C'est sans doute à ce moment que la chapelle qui occupait alors l'extrémité de l'aile sud fut transformée en cuisine, et qu'une autre fut construite au pied du rempart nord. Comme le voudrait la légende, cette nouvelle chapelle aurait été édifiée en ex-voto, au niveau où l'eau de la rivière alors en crue dévastatrice, se serait arrêtée. C'est à cette même époque que de grandes fenêtres furent percées dans la façade ouest, afin de faire pénétrer à flots la lumière au sein de l'édifice, mais ce au détriment de son caractère défensif. Par ailleurs, pour se conformer au goût du jour, on voulut faire une cour d'honneur. On décida d'ouvrir l'ancien rempart qui fermait la cour d'enceinte du côté est, et c'est alors que fut agencé et axé sur cette dernière, le perron à double révolution et deux paliers latéraux enserrant une niche, vide aujourd'hui. Cet escalier comporte deux doubles volées de marches que limite seulement le bandeau de pierre, sans balustrade ni rampe.
Sous la période révolutionnaire, les terres et le château furent saisis et vendus, les tours rasées à hauteur des toits, le château pillé et les papiers enlevés. Les dernières transformations furent effectuées par M. de Chapelain, dans les années 1860. Il fit rehausser les tours (en poivrières) qui avaient été décapitées et fit démolir complètement le rempart qui fermait la cour intérieure, et l'a ainsi mise en évidence. Il fit construire au fond de cette dernière, une galerie vestibule.
Pour résumer, des dispositions défensives initiales du château du Champ, il subsiste aujourd'hui de la première enceinte, les murs des remparts qui sont les murs de la terrasse de la plate-forme du château, les deux tours ruinées d'angle (celle au nord-est ayant été transformée en pigeonnier), alors que rien n'indique plus la position de l'ancien fossé. De la seconde enceinte demeurent le corps principal de logis, ses deux ailes en fer à cheval, la tour à curieuse échauguette, le donjon élancé et dans le mur en face de ce dernier, quelques grosses pierres indiquant l'attache du rempart et de sa poterne, qui reliait les deux ailes et fermait la cour. Tous les aménagements successifs ont laissé leur empreinte. Selon M. de Chapelain: « il résulte de cet ensemble de travaux, un édifice incohérent, où l'on trouve un peu de tout ». Pour autant, cela n'altère en rien la beauté de ce château, la variété de l'architecture constitue le témoignage de son riche passé.

Château du Champ 

Château de Chambonas is in the town of Chambonas in the Ardèche department.The castle order and defends the passage of Chassezac flowing below and is spanned by an old Roman bridge in view of the terraces of the park. From the eleventh century, there arose a tower that was incorporated in later constructions. This would be the north tower, rebuilt to the current building. The land was originally an ecclesiastical fiefdom. Its owner, the bishop of Uzes, donated to the abbot of Saint-Gilles that called for monitoring of the ford (later replaced by the bridge) a knight of La Garde-Guérin. This became the first Lord of Chambonas. The estate remained in the family until 1808. The castle is a fortress from the fifteenth century, several times enlarged and modified, for example during the religious wars of the sixteenth century (especially fratricidal Vivarais): Chambonas then received additional towers and battlements intended to make a stronghold and give him no doubt its current appearance. Afterwards were built terraces and gardens including drawing, according to tradition, is due to Le Nôtre. Sources were captured at half a league from there to feed the fountains. Then the interior design was the subject of extensive work in the course of the eighteenth century. The Marquis de Chanaleilles, by act of 13 February 1808 bought the castle of Aloph, Charles de La Garde Chambonas, son of the last foreign minister of Louis XVI, Scipio, Charles Victor, Auguste de La Garde, third Marquis of Chambonas. The latter was ruined (including game), had incurred huge debts and his son had no choice but to sell the castle and its lands to resolve the situation of his father. In the nineteenth century, Chanaleilles, restored forty years the castle that served as garrison to an infantry company between 1792 and the date on which they had acquired. Without distorting its strong home side, a wing was added, built with materials identical to those of the main body; a gatehouse was added above the door, which the bosses reminiscent of the beautiful gate of the castle of Aubenas. The estate remained in the offspring of Chanaleilles until about 1970. It was then sold and resold after new interiors and restoration of lawns.

Château de Chambonas

The Château de Luc is a ruined castle in the town of Luc in the Lozère département, in the Occitanie région of France. It was built in the 12th century on a previous Celtic site.
The castle, as a strategic point between the two provinces of Gévaudan and Vivarais, guarded a link to the south of France of the Auvergne frequently used by pilgrims of Saint Gilles, also known as the Regordane Way, on which it was a toll-gate.
For the first 100 years or so of its existence it was the home of the Luc family. In the 13th century it became the property of other regional seigneurs. During the Hundred Years' War it withstood a number of sieges. During the 16th century Wars of Religion the state of Gévaudan garrisoned the castle. Around 1630 the castle was dismantled under orders of Richelieu. During the period surrounding the French Revolution it continued to fall apart from neglect.
In 1878, local parishioners renovated the keep into a chapel, installing a shrine to the Virgin Mary. In the same year, the English writer Robert Louis Stevenson passed through on his travel-adventure, as he recorded in Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes:
... [the hill] came to a point in the ruins of the castle of Luc, which pricked up impudently from below my feet, carrying on a pinnacle a tall white statue of Our Lady, which, I heard with interest, weighed fifty quintals, and was to be dedicated on the 6th of October ... Luc itself was a straggling double file of houses wedged between hill and river. It had no beauty, nor was there any notable feature, save the old castle overhead with its fifty quintals of brand-new Madonna.
It remains in ruins today and attracts hikers who re-trace Stevenson's route on the GR 70.
The castle is the property of the commune. It was declared a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture in 1986.

Château de Luc

The Château de Portes is a castle located in the commune of Portes in the Gard département of France. It overlooks the Regordane, an ancient avenue used by the pilgrims of Saint-Giles and the Croisés on their way towards the Holy Land for a distance of ten miles. The Anduze, Randon and Polignac families paid homage to the abbot of Saint-Pierre-de-Sauve for this castle between the 11th and the 14th centuries. The castle is listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
History
Raymond Guillaume de Budos, the nephew of Pope Clement V, bought the seigniory in 1322, and added at least two additional flanks to the castle in 1384. Thibaud de Budos recovered the castle after deposing his father André, who had joined with the English at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War.
The seigniory became increasingly rich and powerful until Louis XII set it up as a marquisat in favour of Antoine Hercules de Budos, to whom is undoubtedly owed the form of the present castle. His father was a bishop of Agde, one of his sisters a duchess of Montmorency, and another the abbess of "l'Abbaye des Dames" (The Abbey of Dames) in Caen. The Maréchal-de-Camp was killed in the siege of Privas in 1629. His daughter, Marie-Félice, left the castle as an heirloom to her nephew, Prince de Conti, in 1693, whose descendants sold it to Louis XVI in 1781.
With the French Revolution, the castle was nationalised and sold to six successive owners. In 1841, in the hands of the Vernede family, the monument was restored from its decrepit condition.
In 1929, following the intensive exploitation of the coal mines under the site, the ground broke down ruining the castle and forcing its evacuation. The village was rebuilt about 300 metres further. Circa 1960, the grounds were stabilised and in 1972 an association was formed to recover the castle. It has been classified as a historical monument since 1984.
Architecture
The castle has a singular architectural style among castles in Europe because of its 49 degree spurs in the shape of a ship's bow, which earned the castle its nickname of a vessel in the Cévennes (French: un vaisseau en Cévennes).
