Stronghold, princely palace and symbol of the power of the Counts and Dukes of the Savoie, the Château des Ducs de Savoie brings together a remarkable collection of buildings, constructed between the 18th century and the present day.
The princes who governed this state for almost 900 years and the number of administrations that followed have left their mark. Since 1860, when the Savoie region was annexed to France, the Préfecture and the Conseil Général du Département continued this administrative function.
In the Medieval wing, the rooms of the former Chambre des Comptes display the history of the château. This is the only part of the château open to the public, outside of the guided tours.
Guided tours leave from the Hôtel de Cordon CIAP (71 rue Saint Réal), and allow visitors to see inside part of the Medieval buildings:

The Château des Comtes de Challes was a French fortified house built by the de Challes family, an old noble family who owned several fiefs (there is a mention of a certain “de Challes” participating in a tournament in Chambéry in 1348). They were in charge of the so-called high, medium and low judicial systems of the entire municipality, and received feudal rent from about thirty parishes.
The de Challes family disappeared with the death of Louis in 1590. Nicknamed “Sully le Savoyard”, he was a great financial and legal reformer under the reign of Duke Emmanuel-Phillibert. One of his children, Hector, witnessed the nomination of Challes as a barony in 1618. President of the Senate and an ambassador to Henri IV, he was father to nineteen children.
One of his children was the Jesuit who gave his name to a major work on mathematics (in which one can find the famous “Challes” relationship), a science that Louis XIV asked him to come teach in Paris. The entire family was showered with honours: positions in embassies, the Senate, the Court of Accounts, episcopal sees and military assignments. In 1669, Challes was promoted to become a marquisate..
It is also reported that Jean-Jacques Rousseau gave music lessons to a certain Miss Gasparine Balthazarde de Challes. The third and last Marquis de Challes died in 1777. The inheritance passed to a branch of the Millet family in Faverges who never had the chance to benefit from, since the onset of the revolution obliged the new lord to bury his treasure and flee.
Successive owners
Sold as a « Bien National », the Château was purchased by the Marquis’ former intendant named Balmain, a man of law. By marrying one of Mr. Balmain’s daughters, Doctor Domenguet, the personal doctor of the King and the royal family in Savoie, a professor of medicine, chemistry and botany, and an honorary military doctor, became the owner of the Château. On April 11, 1841, he discovered its spring, which he studied, experimented with and made public to other scientists.
Today
On March 25, 2002, the Trèves family purchased the Château and launched major restoration and embellishment work, leading to its distinction today as a member of the network of “Châteaux and Hotels of France”. To the best of our knowledge, the Château des Comtes de Challes is the oldest Hotel-Restaurant situated in a Frabce Château since 1860.

Le château des Marches est une ancienne maison forte, du xive siècle profondément remanié à la Renaissance, situé dans la combe de Savoie à la frontière de la Savoie et du Dauphiné sur la commune des Marches dans le département de la Savoie en région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Situation
Le château des Marches est situé dans le département français de la Savoie sur la commune des Marches, dans le bourg, à 300 mètre au sud de l'église sur un mamelon d’où la vue embrasse la vallée de l'Isère. Le château placé à la limite du comté de Savoie et du Dauphiné protégeait Chambéry ainsi que toute la partie occidentale du comté. Il commandait la route de Chambéry, Lyon par Les Échelles et Genève à Grenoble par la vallée de l'Isère et la route menant à l'Italie par Montmélian.
Histoire
Le château des Marches est une partie intégrante de la ligne de défense mise en place par les comtes de Savoie à partir d'Amédée V, qui élève à cet emplacement sur une motte un premier château en bois en 1301-1302. Aymon le Pacifique le reconstruira en pierre à partir de 1342, son fils, Amédée VI de Savoie, le Comte Vert, finira de l'achever.
Il a pour premiers seigneurs, Guillaume de Cordon en 1346, Rodolphe de Cordon en 1359 et Guillaume de Cordon en 1392.
Le comte Amédée VIII de Savoie le donne en fief, avec celui de Montbel, en février 1403 et jusqu'en 1418 à Aymon de La Balme, sire d'Apremont qui détient déjà le château d'Apremont et qui en délègue la garde à Portier de Chignin. De 1418 à 1422 il est entre les mains de Guigues de la Balme puis de Guigonne de la Balme, dame d'Apremont, héritière d'Aymon, de 1422 à 1442. Guigonne a épousé en 1417 Gaspard II de Montmayeur et, en 1440, elle est autorisée à substituer à son nom celui des Marches.
Le 21 août 1421, Catherine de La Ravoire dame de Silans et des Marches, veuve d’Aymon de la Balme, désigne son petit-fils Jacques de Montmayeur, fils de Gaspard et de Guigonne, comme héritier.
Le château passe donc par héritage à la famille savoyarde des Montmayeur qui le garderont jusqu'en 1486. Ils y érigent une chapelle dédicacée à saint Michel. Se succèdent, Gaspard II de Montmayeur, maréchal de Savoie, Jacques de Montmayeur, maréchal de Savoie, qui en a la possession jusqu'en 1486 et qui en délèguera la gestion à Jean de Médici de 1482 à 1483, puis à Aymon Panice de 1485 à 14865. Au décès de Jacques de Montmayeur en mars 1487, selon un acte passé le 27 août 1486 le duc Charles Ier de Savoie attribue la châtellenie à Gilberte de Polignac, nièce du maréchal Jacques de Montmayeur et épouse d’Anthelme de Miolans, maréchal de Savoie. Se succèdent Anthelme de Miolans, chevalier, de 1486 à 1489, Jacques II de Miolans de 1489 à 1496 qui lui-même emploie Claude Ruffi, bourgeois de Montmélian, de 1493 à 1494. Claude-Jacques de Miolans, chevalier, de 1496 à 1497, Louis de Miolans, chevalier, de 1497 à 1513, qui a comme intendant Gaspard de la Challandière en 1502 et enfin Jacques III de Miolans, chevalier, de 1513 à 1523.
La seigneurie des Marches ayant été entretemps érigée en comté en 1491 et unie avec le fief de Montmayeur.
À la mort de Jacques III de Miolans, en 1423, le château échoit à sa sœur Claude ou Claudine de Miolans, épouse de Guillaume de Poitiers lui-même frère de Diane de Poitiers. Le duc de Savoie Charles III négocie, avec Claude, le rachat des terres des Marches et d'Entremont avec possibilité de rachat du fief. En 1526 Béatrice de Portugal, duchesse de Savoie, le reçoit en échange de Caramagne (Piémont) et le cède en 1531 pour 3 000 écus à François Noyel de Bellegarde, ministre plénipotentiaire du duc de Savoie à la cour de Charles Quint. Les Noyel de Bellegarde seront seigneurs des Marches et d’Entremont de 1531 à 1830.
Le château est entre les mains de François Noyel, fils de Jean Noyel, de 1531 à 1556. Claude du Verger, écuyer, seigneur des Marches, en 1542, en prête hommage au duc de Savoie. Jean François Ier Noyel de Bellegarde en a la possession de 1556 à 1623.
En 1600, Henri IV y séjourne du 16 au 18 août lors du siège de Montmélian.
Claude André Noyel de Bellegarde en a la charge en 1623 auquel succèdent Guillaume puis Jean-François II de Bellegarde, gouverneur du Fort Barraux, jusqu'en 1663.
Janus Noyel de Bellegarde, premier président du Sénat de Savoie, chancelier du roi de Sardaigne, en a la possession de 1663 à 1712 et voit son comté érigé en marquisat en juin 1682 ou 1688 se succèdent Jean-François III de 1712 à 1742, Dom Joseph François de 1742 à 1759 et François Eugène Robert de Bellegarde de 1759 à sa mort en 1790. Celui-ci, général, né à Londres en 1720, marquis des Marches et de Cursinge, au service des Pays-Bas retiré à Chambéry, restaure profondément le château et fait ériger la salle des fêtes. Marié à mademoiselle d'Hervilly, décédée à l'âge de 23 ans, avec qui il a trois filles, Adélaïde-Victoire, née en 1772, Césarine-Lucie, née en 1774 et Françoise-Aurore-Éléonore, née en 1776, il donne en mariage en 1787 sa fille ainée, Adèle âgée de quinze ans, à Frédéric de Bellegarde l'un de ses neveux4 ou cousins, colonel dans l'armée sarde, en garnison à Chambéry. De cette union naît un fils en 1791 et une fille. Frédéric, avec sa femme Adèle, son fils et sa belle-sœur Aurore, se réfugient au Piémont lors de l'occupation de la Savoie par les français.
Dans la nuit du 21 au 22 septembre 1792, l'armée sarde s'est repliée en Piémont, sans combat, devant l'invasion des troupes révolutionnaires françaises acclamées par le peuple savoyard. Les révolutionnaires avancent la fleur au fusil, aux ordres du marquis Anne-Pierre de Montesquiou-Fézensac, plus connu sous le nom de général Montesquiou.
Le château des Marches est cité en pays de Savoie comme site témoin du seul acte de résistance au cours de cette invasion : le colonel Charles-François de Buttet officier d'artillerie du roi Victor-Amédée III, a installé une batterie de 6 pièces de canon, deux sur la terrasse du château, deux sur le plan inférieur et les deux derniers dans l'axe de Chapareillan10. Cet îlot de résistance fut réduit par le maréchal de camp Laroque à la tête de 12 compagnies de fantassins, 12 piquets, 400 chasseurs à pied et 200 dragons.
C'est dans un château déserté de ses occupants que Montesquiou loge le 22 septembre 1792.
En novembre de la même année, les deux sœurs, Adèle alors âgée de vingt ans et Aurore de seize ans, reprennent possession du château. Ouvertes aux idées révolutionnaires, elles y accueillent nombre de Jacobins ainsi que le général Kellermann et y organisent des bals et des fêtes. Leur vie tumultueuse fut contée en 1904 par Ernest Daudet dans Le Roman d'un conventionnel. Hérault de Séchelles et les dames de Bellegarde, d'après des documents inédits.
Frédéric-Pierre de Bellegarde, chambellan de l'empereur d'Autriche, fils de Frédéric et d'Adèle, à la mort de sa mère survenue en 1830 à Paris, vend le château en 1831 au comte Camille Costa de Beauregard.
Michel Costa de Beauregard, petit-fils de Camille, vend, avant son entrée dans les ordres, en 1882 le château à son cousin Costa de Beauregard, chanoine. Avec sa sœur Alix (°1847-†1915), religieuse à la charité de Saint-Vincent de Paul, il y fonde un orphelinat féminin, qui accueille 72 fillettes en 1914. Monseigneur Ernest Costa donne le château aux filles de La Charité. Il servira d'hôpital militaire lors des deux conflits mondiaux ; de 1914 à 1918 et de 1939 à 1940.
L'orphelinat est devenu une école ménagère en 1950, puis une maison de retraite en 1972, de 90 places aujourd'hui.
Description
Le château des Marches a été de nombreuses fois remanié ; probablement à la Renaissance puis à la veille de la Révolution.
Construit à l'extrémité du promontoire, face à l'assaillant, à l'origine au xive siècle, il se présentait sous la forme d'une enceinte quadrangulaire de 30 mètres de large et longue de 40 mètres. Deux corps de logis parallèles, l'un au nord tourné vers Chambéry et l'autre au sud-ouest vers l’Isère, sont reliés par une haute muraille épaisse de 1,60 mètre autour d'une cour intérieure. La façade nord-ouest est flanquée de deux tours rondes d'angles, ramenées aujourd'hui à hauteur du toit, qui protégeaient la porte d'entrée du xve siècle. Elles s'éclairaient par des fenêtres à meneaux. Surplombant les terrasses du château, la façade opposée, percée de nombreuses fenêtres, est flanquée de deux poivrières en encorbellement d’où l'on pouvait surveiller la vallée. Les remparts et les fenêtres à meneaux, à l'exception de celle de la façade d'entrée, ont dû être supprimés au xvie siècle sous les Bellegarde, qui transforment l'antique forteresse en château de plaisance.
Le château aujourd'hui se compose de trois bâtiments en forme de U. Tournée vers le mont Granier, il subsiste la muraille, percée d'étroites ouvertures, qu'une porte-fenêtre à encadrement Louis XVI fait communiquer avec les jardins. La façade nord-est, dégagée du fait de la suppression de la muraille, ouverte vers le plateau des Bauges, arbore un péristyle italianisant à colonnes de marbre Louis XVI qui sert d'entrée à la salle de bal.
La salle de bal, appuyée sur la muraille sud-ouest, datant de 1780 à 1790, érigée par Eugène de Bellegarde, mesure 18 m de long par 14 m de large sur deux étages d'une hauteur totale de 10 m. Une galerie Louis XVI en fer forgé est érigée à mi-niveau et ceinture la salle. Cette salle s'ouvre et s'éclaire, côté jardin, par la porte-fenêtre Louis XVI et par deux fenêtres et du côté donnant sur la cour intérieure par quatre fenêtres ainsi qu'une porte.
Sa décoration intérieure, réalisée par les frères Galliari, est faite de peintures en trompe-l'œil. Cet ensemble de peintures recouvre les murs des deux étages et le plafond de la grande salle du château : le plafond est peint à l'imitation de caissons, et les murs de pilastres, colonnes, panneaux de lambris, portes, balustrades et perspectives de galeries et rotondes. Les murs de la galerie sont ornés d'imitations de statues antiques d'Hercule, Mars, Diane et Bellone. Y sont représentés en médaillon le marquis et ses trois filles.
L'ensemble de ces peintures décoratives de Galliari, fin du xviiie siècle, des murs et du plafond de la grande salle du château des Marches ont été classées à titre d'objet le 1er avril 1952.
Une muraille ponctuée de tours de flanquements enserrait le château et le bourg des Marches. On accédait au bourg fortifié par une porte que défendaient trois tours cylindriques couronnées de mâchicoulis. Fondé par Amédée V en 1301, le village actuel a conservé une porte de son enceinte et en vue de Montmélian on peut encore voir des bases de murs et de tours rondes.

Château des Marches

The château was built in the 11th century on the ruins of a Roman castrum. According to the writer Albanis de Beaumont, it is one of the oldest in Savoie. Owned by the Seyssel family from 1263, it was bequeathed to the Jesuits in Chambery in 1671 who quickly sold it to Claude Antoine Sallier of the Tour de Cordon, first judge of the Court of Auditors. HIs descendants retained it until the Revolution. It was in damaged and sold as a national asset.
After the first work had been carried out by the lawyer from Chambery, Antoine Métral in 1810, the château owes its final restoration to Joseph Giraud and Pellegrini, the architect of the Thermal Baths, the Grand Cercle Casino and several hotels in Aix-les-Bains during the 1850’s and 1860’s. In the 1870’s, it was purchased by the Gigot de Villefaigne family, a family who emigrated to Russia and several of whose members were jewellers to the Tsars.
The château is known in the world of literature: Montaigne refers to an arms factory there on his return from Italy in the 16th Century. Honoré de Balzac also stayed in Aix-les-Bains and gave a romantic and detailed description of the Lake le Bourget in his novel La peau de chagrin in 1831 while George Sand chose it as the setting for her novel Mademoiselle la Quintinie and renamed it Turdy in 1861. At the end of the 19th Century, Queen Victoria visited the owners on several occasions. She wrote in her personal diary, «The view from the château’s terraces is superb. We descended by an old staircase to an old terraced garden, which steeply overhung the lake, which was so beautiful and so calm. The reflection of the mountains was so intense that it gave the impression that it was an extension of the view. »
Lamartine’s footprint
Alphonse de Lamartine is an historical character whose talent and destiny left a mark on the entire lake area by conferring on it the undisputed title of the capital of the French Romantic Movement.
While staying in Aix-les-Bains in 1816, the poet met Julie Charles. The Bourdeau beach and the natural cave above it were the places that nurtured their romance until Julie’s death in December 1817. This tragic loss had a marked effect on the poet and partly inspired the anthology Méditations poétiques (1820). Drawing inspiration from the natural sensitivity emanating from the lake and its surrounds, he also wrote his finest poems (notably Le Lac in 1820) and his novel Raphaël (1849).
One of the places where he liked to stroll was the cave at Bourdeau. Head for the inlet and the little port, then take the little path with steps. This path will take you to a little stony beach, where you will find the cave. Lamartine let his gaze wander and his imagination drift towards the waves of Lake le Bourget.

2016: The year of renaissance
In increasingly harsh world, people have returned to the château as a haven of peace, a refuge for body and soul. Because of its position, it basks in the land of the Romantic Movement which helps the visitor rediscover a direction in life. Each of the seven rooms has been designed to inspire travel. They have all been designed, furnished and laid out to tell a story.
The château is also open to the business world (seminars, conferences…) and is also used as a cultural centre (exhibitions). The library features 47 photographs of our greatest actors and actresses in their dressing rooms waiting to go on stage, with their personal definition of « what does a theatre dressing room mean to you? ».
A south-facing terrace overlooking the lake and the surrounding massifs is a place where you can come and admire the scenery, read or meditate. You can also enjoy breakfast and lunch there.
There is a cellar to introduce you to or give you a taste of marvellous wines principally from the Alpine Arc. In the middle of the cellar, sits an imposing fireplace which enables you to enjoy a more rustic, simpler cuisine suited to drinking these delights. The old-world chateau style is also to be found in the wood-burning grate which connects the dining and breakfast rooms.
Lastly, theme-based days and holidays are offered in the château: lake techniques, discovering the flora and fauna, film previews, cookery lessons, fashion shows, “nature therapy” and wellness classes (relaxation, meditation), vineyard visits … A host of sense-based activities to help you get back to life’s essentials.

Château de Bourdeau

The Fortress of Miolans is a former fortress prison located in a remote area of Savoy between Italy and France. The site, which has been occupied since the fourth century AD, strategically controlled the route across the junction of the Isere and Arc rivers. The fortress was converted into a prison by the Counts of Savoy in the mid-16th century. Its notoriety led it to be compared to the Bastille in Paris.
Location
The fortress of Miolans is in the hamlet of Miolans, part of the small town of St-Pierre Albigny. It is located between the major towns of Montmélian and Albertville.
Located in the foothills of the Arclusaz mountains, the fortress lies on a 550m-long rocky ridge 200m above the Combe de Savoie valley. It overlooks the confluence of the Arc and Isère rivers where the bridge, known as the Pont-Royal, is sited. Beyond the fortress is the Maurienne valley.
Early history
In 1014, documents mention that the Miolans family - one of the oldest in Savoy - were in possession of the site.
By 1083, the Miolans had built a small tower castle on the rocky promontory. In the second half of the 14th century, the lords of Miolans extended the fortifications by completing a second tower. This had been supplemented with a third tower in the early 16th century.
Prison
Following the repatriation [they fled to the New World] of the Lords of Miolans in 1523, ownership of the castle passed to the Counts of Savoy. Count Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy transformed the fortress into a prison, a role it would retain until 1792. In its time as a prison, more than 200 prisoners were housed at Miolins.
The castle became known as the Bastille tilt (English: Bastille of the Alps). Its dungeons were called Hell, Purgatory, Paradise, Treasury, and little and great hope. Among the notable persons imprisoned at Miolins were:
Pietro Giannone, 1736–1738, historian.
Vincent Rene Lavin, 1767–1786, forger of banknotes.
François-Marie's Alée, Baron Songy, 1772.
Marquis de Sade, 1772.
All prisoners were released following the French revolution. The fortress prison was abandoned and allowed to fall into ruin as a symbol of the Ancien Régime.
In 1869, Eugene Alexander Guiter, Prefect of Savoy, privately bought the fortress from the French state and began its restoration. Castle Miolans was classified as a historical monument in May 1944.
Today the castle remains a private property but is open to visitors.
Escape of the Marquis De Sade
In 1792, the Marquis de Sade staged an escaped with two companions; his valet Latour, and François-Marie's Alée, Baron Songy. The Marquis had requested that he and his companions be allowed to dine in a room within the main dining area, adjacent to a room containing unbarred windows. The three of them subsequently made their escape through the unbarred windows while the guards were having their own dinners.
The Marquis instructed Latour to leave a candle burning in his room, along with a note on the table to the guards. Much later, a guard and the prison commandant discovered the note in the empty room. It said the Marquis praised the decency with which he had been treated and expressed his hope that the guards would not be held accountable for his escape. However, by the time several hours had passed so it was too late to gather a search party.

Fortress of Miolans

According to well written, Château de La Mar is, since 1244, in the heart of the hillside Marestel. This large house is then only a "Aula" which does not yet have vine. Its successive owners were lords who left their name to the hillside hamlet and castle.   It was in 1392 and it will belong to Humbert and William Mareste. It was not until 1432 that one of their descendants, Claude Mareste, imports of Cyprus a grape called Samos there, he called then Highness in honor of Anne de Lusignan. It therefore urges the establishment of the winery. As a tribute to the count that we named this Marestel believed.   Their succession of family Aymavigne that will disappear by the end of the sixteenth century and seventeenth beginning, "La Mar" will restore and will enlarge to 1625. Giving their name to the house, it becomes the castle of La Mar .   The breath of the French Revolution affects Savoy. It became the 84th French department under the name of "Mont Blanc". Castle La Mar was confiscated as state property but its two towers in Muraz were not slaughtered. The last descendant of La Mar, Teresa Lucia sold in 1818 to General Comte de Boigne which in turn gives way to Cordon Count who had alliances with La Mar.    In 1954, the castle became the property of Jeandet brothers who made a farm and vineyard.   In 2009, the castle was sold. The new owners undertook a complete restoration of the castle, respecting original architecture scrupulously while restructuring and modernizing equipment.   In 2010, the hillside Marestel and the castle was classified picturesque site. To date the operation is only winery.   The Château de la Mar is now a charming guest house Lys 5 with 1 bedroom and 4 luxurious suites, gourmet dinner and a tasting room open to the public; a unique tourist stage combining history of the region and relaxed lifestyle in the heart of Savoy.   Description: The fortified house is flanked by two square towers that frame the facade of the west and its mullioned windows of the fifteenth century. It was repaired in 1625 in the northern part, on the occasion of the marriage of Helen La Mar with Pierre cord, says a coat of arms of La Mar, carved at the entrance of the court.

Château de La Mar

The Château du Touvet is a French castle built in the 13th century, with a garden à la française and a water garden built in the 18th century, located between Grenoble and Chambéry in the Isére Department of the Rhône-Alpes Region of France. The gardens are classified among the notable gardens of France by the French Ministry of Culture. The chateau and gardens are privately owned, but open to the public.
Description
The 13th-century castle has five towers, a moat and a drawbridge. Within the castle is the residence rebuilt in the 18th century, with the original furnishings and paneling.
The 7-hectare garden features a stairway of water, using a hydraulic system built in the 18th century. The garden is made up of a series of terraces, with six parterres of broderies made of boxwood. It also has a small enclosed garden, called the jardin de la comtesse; a kitchen garden, and an alley of linden trees.
History
The castle has been in the same family for five hundred years. It was originally built in the 13th century to guard the borders of France against the Dukes of Savoy. In the 18th century, Pierre de Marcieu, the Lieutenant-General and commander in chief of Dauphiné, rebuilt the chateau and built the gardens around it. The water garden was created between 1758-1765.
Owners of the castle included Guigues Guiffrey, a member of the court of King Francis I, and French Ambassador to the court of Henry VIII; and Nicolas Charles Oudinot, a Marshal of France serving under Napoleon Bonaparte. The castle is currently owned by Bruno and Isabelle de Quinsonas, descendants of the original owners.

Château du Touvet

The Château de la Barre is a residence in the commune of Brégnier-Cordon in the Ain département of France. It stands on the western slope of the Mont de Cordon.
The main building dates from the 20th century, but the fortifications date back to a 14th-century castle. The château was originally a court of justice and a toll collection centre, hence its name "La Barre".
History
The Château de la Barre belonged to the House of Cordon, who moved here following the destruction of the nearby Château de Cordon. Its position above the Rhône allowed it to command traffic on the river.
Le Rouge et le Noir
The castle was the scene of a scandal involving a young seminarian from the village of Brangues, Antoine Berthe, engaged by the Duke in 1826 as tutor to this children. Berthet had seduced the young Henriette de Cordon, leading to his dismissal. Convinced that his former mistress, the wife of the mayor of Brangues, was behind his dismissal, he shot her in the church at Brangues. Arrested and condemned to death, he was executed in Grenoble in 1828.
Stendhal, who was familiar with courts and judicial affairs, was inspired by the story to write his novel, Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black).
