This is the story of France and Lorraine encapsulated in one family. The Château was built on the banks of the gently flowing Nied River in 1720 by Jean-Baptiste Thomas, Marquis of Pange. Ten generations later and it is still lived in by the same family. A living history of the Duchy of Lorraine, the French Revolution, wars, occupation and land annexation until we arrive at the glory of the Free French Forces.

The Château du Val de Mercy is located in the Place de l‘Eglise square, just behind the church in the village of Val de Mercy, in a property which was historically the seat of the Baron de Coulanges.
Over several centuries the Château du Val de Mercy was continuously involved in the growing of Burgundy wines. The Domaine was particularly known for a white wine produced near the village of Val de Mercy in an area, or ‘climat’ called ‘Pommard’. This white Pommard is not to be confused with the famous red Burgundy from Pommard in the Côte de Beaune appellation.
In historical documents we find proof that around 1680 the park of the Château was indeed planted as a vineyard going by the name of ‘Le Clos du Château’. Unfortunately, most of the old vines were destroyed in the late 19th century by the dreaded phylloxera, which forced an abrupt discontinuation of the wine production.
In 1992, the Château du Val de Mercy started rebuilding its wine production facilities. Some first vineyards were planted in the nearby hamlet of Nanteau producing an excellent Pinot Noir. Rapid expansion followed with the acquisition of a wine growing estate a few kilometres away in Chitry le Fort (Canton de Chablis).
This estate, housing all the necessary technical production facilities and some 30 ha of producing vineyards, was to become what is known today as the Domaine du Château du Val de Mercy.
Two thirds of our vineyards are located in the Chablis appellation and the remaining third in the Auxerrois area.
In 2007 the Château du Val de Mercy acquired some additional vineyards in the Côte de Beaune area, in the villages of Pommard, Volnay and Auxey Duresses. Additional technical facilities have been installed in a historical property in the Place de l‘Eglise square in Pommard.
In the next few years it will at last be possible to enjoy an excellent Pommard produced by the Château du Val de Mercy again, but this time as a red wine from the Côte de Beaune area.

The installation of the German garrison in Metz after annexation and the creation in 1890 of the XVI Corps in order to make Metz "the cornerstone of Germany's power", called for the creation of an official residence for the military commander of this new corps. The former palace of the commander of the XVI corps of the German army, Marshal Von Haessler, it was built from 1902 to 1904 in German neo-Renaissance style. The palace is characteristic of historicist architecture at the time. The palace and its park can be visited during the European Heritage Days.

Château de La Grange-aux-Ormes is a former lord of the country messin. The first castle was built in 1187 by the monks of Notre-Dame-des-Champs and Saint-Symphorien in Metz. The Counts of Bar sell for 300 denarii which Mr Collignon, in 1322, recognizes vassal of the Count of Bar. In 1404, the family Vry buys and sells in 1409 the chapter of the cathedral of Metz. It then passes into the hands of the family of Apremont which gives the pledge to Metz aristocrats in 1436, the de Gournay and it signals the arrival of a woman claiming to be Joan, May 20, 1436. In 1500 it is sold to Chauvrain then in 1586, Claude Apremont sold the castle to Gronnaix and purchasers succeed: Jehan Travald; the chapter of the cathedral until 1611; in 1614, Jacques Loys, lawyer at the Parliament of Paris; in 1661, Count Cherisey; in 1709, Mr. Le Goullon selling the Bishop Coislin, bishop of Metz to do his episcopal palace. St. Helier family bought it in 1728 and the parish priest of Chandellier Marly says July 22, 1768 "the chapel of La Grange-aux-Ormes of our parish is in good condition and decently decorated to celebrate the Holy Mass." In 1785, it is the property of the counts of Ourches then by inheritance, viscounts of Nettancourt. The castle will come later in the famous family of Clermont-Tonnerre. The Duchesse puts at the disposal of the Minor Seminary of Montigny-lès-Metz. Sold in 1923 to Bogenez Hyacinthe, the latter set up his farm and that until 1963: potatoes, peas, wheat, rye, barley, beets, eggs, milk, cattle and horse sale. Since a pen is for deer. The adjacent wood was transformed in the 1960s into residential subdivision by building several closed (Clos de La Grange-aux-Ormes in 1972 Clos des Lilas then in 1980, Clos des Acacias). The park at the rear of the castle houses a golf since 1991, led by Pierre Bogenez. The outbuildings have been converted into the clubhouse and restaurant.

Château de La Grange-aux-Ormes

The Château Saint-Sixte is a 12th-century castle in the commune of Freistroff in the Moselle département of France.
The Château Saint-Sixte stands on a small plain between Freistroff and Rémelfang. It was built in the 12th century by the seigneur Wirich de Valcourt. During the Renaissance, it was transformed into a residence and was altered again in the 18th century. It was saved from ruin by the Gehl family in 1986. Separated from the village on the left bank of the Nied, it has a strange oval plan, surrounding by ancient moats. The six originally separate buildings are roofed with two slopes of tiles and arranged around an entirely enclosed courtyard. In each corner, a polygonal staircase tower gives access to the upper storeys.
The château is open to visitors every afternoon from April to October, with guided tours at weekends. Organised groups may visit throughout the year.
The castle is privately owned. In 1986, the Gehl family bought the castle and the estate around it. Their sons Dominique, Philippe and Luc undertook the thorough restoration of the castle. In 2007, Philippe Gehl bought the castle from his two brothers, and continues the work with the assistance of a restoration association. It has been listed since 1991 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
