The imposing Château de Malbrouck was built between 1419 and 1434. It is a particularly important testimony since it is the only Castle of the 15th century fully preserved in Lorraine. Instead of surprise, discovery and imagination, he has everything to fascinate. Visit course reveals playfully the six centuries of history of the Castle.
Brief summary of history
Built in the early 15th century, the hinge of the middle ages and the Renaissance, between the Germanic world and the latin world, the Château de Malbrouck keeps track of these transitions in its architecture, blending elements of the Castle fort and those of the residential Castle.
Over the centuries, several European conflicts pass by the Lorraine and the Château de Malbrouck. The last war of Louis XIV, the war of Succession of Spain, did not spare the fortified building. By choosing the chateau as headquarters, the English Duke of Marlborough (the song «Malbrouck goes to war») provides site a great reputation over time. Completely restored, the Château de Malbrouck is a place of culture.
Architecture
The Château de Malbrouck has many elements of defence. To the North, the entrance to the castle is protected by a Barbican, a mobile bridge, a moat and a Châtelet. The Tower of the ladies is equipped with machicolations giving both outside and inside the Castle.
The thickness of the walls is an effective defence, the Lantern Tower and its northeast courtine have walls of 4.80 metres thick. Shooting openings are present in all four rounds and the Tower of the Lantern has friendly gun fire rooms. The Castle stairs run upside down, this allows in fact right-handed Defender to be better placed to hit.
Animation
The Château de Malbrouck offers a scenography retracing five centuries of history at the same time as major exhibitions. Festivals and performances are regularly organized or programmed within its murailles4. In addition the Château de Malbrouck offers every year exhibitions.
