Description

Full of character and ambience, the Château de Cocove offers a traditional French château experience. Set in secluded grounds about twenty minutes past the wine stores and port of Calais, you’re in excellent position to begin or end your adventures in France—or perhaps use the hotel as a base to explore the region.

The warm and friendly staff try hard to make you feel comfortable (no matter your level of French!) and the owners truly care that your stay goes well.

Guest rooms may be found on both the ground level and first floor of the main château with most having views of the garden. Three additional “Pavilion” apartments are set up in some outer buildings—namely an old sheep barn, guards quarters, and old chapel. These latter rooms have views looking out over the gardens and orchards. All guest rooms and bathrooms have undergone recent refurbishing. Bathrooms can be on the smallish side, and depending on the room, may have hand-held showers in tubs. Be sure to specify your wishes upon booking.

The château ambience continues in the restaurant with its stone floor, brickwork, and beamed ceiling. Dining here is well regarded. Be sure to make a reservation since the restaurant is only open 12pm to 2pm and from 7pm to 9pm. The bar opens at 7:30pm. Views look out over the grounds.

longlongago

Since the first documented owners, Fidbert and Frumold of Cukhove, in 1084, various local lords have presided over the estate. Becquet de Cocove built the present structure in 1741.

Following the French Revolution, the people of Artois took possession of the château until the end of the 19th century. The Count of Coëtlogon eventually acquired Cocove, and he added a distillery, which functioned until World War II when German officers occupied the grounds. The Coëtlogon family kept the château until the 1970s.

Pamela’s Perspective

Because of the château’s excellent location to the ferry at Calais, you’ll find much of the clientele is from the UK. If you’re looking for a weekend getaway or perhaps are just arriving to or leaving from France, Cocove makes a fun choice.
