The castle of Boussac
Particularly impressive on its rocky spur, the superb Boussac Castle built in the 12th century has had an eventful history. George Sand stayed there on several occasions.
Brief summary of history
Boussac Castle was built in the 12th century, and then heavily damaged during the hundred years war. It was rebuilt in the 15th century by Jean de Brosse, companion of Joan of Arc. The Castle will change owners over the centuries. Redesigned at the end of the 13th century, it has narrowly escaped complete destruction during the French Revolution.
This romantic place was in the 19th century a source of inspiration for the writer George Sand which has resided there regularly and wrote the novel "Jeanne". The castle was bought by the town of Boussac in 1837. First used as a warehouse, it became the seat of the Sub-Prefecture and then gendarmerie settled there. In 1965, Bernadette and Lucien Blondeau acquired a castle empty and dilapidated. They restore, furnish it, endow national collections, and open it to the public.
The architecture of the Castle
The façade of the castle of Boussac looks austere with Brown stones, punctuated by rectangular towers topped tile. It consists of a rectangular building flanked by two square towers and a three sided stair Tower, a large round tower. The South-West Tower has preserved part of the crows from his machicolation.
Inside the castle, the guards room has two monumental fireplaces from the 15th century. You will also discover tapestries, a huge kitchen with rare utensils, old woodwork and antique furniture.
On the second floor one can see the room that George Sand occupied many times, especially during an epidemic that forced him away from Nohant and during the war of 1870.
