This architectural complex was crucial to the Salinas de Añana - Puentelarrá salt route, used to distribute salt to Castile and Bizkaia. It belonged to the Hurtado de Mendoza family and these, although from Álava, constructed it very much in the style of Castilian strongholds. In the 16th century the Hurtado de Mendoza family became the Counts de Orgaz.
