From the walls of the Roman city of Asturica Augusta, dating from the late III century, only a part remains today because, due to the continuous invasions and destructions of Astorga, some of the curtain walls of the fortified enclosure standing today were raised on the early wall of medieval times (IX century).

The Episcopal Palace of Astorga (Leonese: Palacio Episcopal d’Estorga) is a building by Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. It was built between 1889 and 1913. Designed in the Catalan Modernisme style, it is one of only three buildings by Gaudí outside Catalonia.
History
When the original Episcopal Palace was destroyed by a fire in the 19th century, Bishop Juan Bautista Grau y Vallespinos of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Astorga decided to assign the design of the new building to his friend Antoni Gaudí. The two had become friends when Grau was Vicar-General in the Archdiocese of Tarragona and had inaugurated a church for which the architect had designed the high altar.
When Gaudí received the commission, he was still working at the Palau Güell in Barcelona, and thus he could not move to Astorga to study the terrain and the area of the new construction. He therefore asked the bishop to send him photographs so Gaudí could plan the new project. Gaudí sent back his design, and it was approved in February 1889. The first stone was placed in June the following year.
The edifice, built in gray granite from El Bierzo, is in a neo-medieval style harmonizing with its location, including the cathedral in particular. It does, however, also feature some of the elements typical of the later Gaudí, such as the arches of the entrance with buttresses, and the chimneys integrated in the side façades. Gaudí had devised a five-meter tall angel to crown the façade, but it was never mounted. The façade has four cylindrical towers and is surrounded by a ditch.
In 1893, after the death of Bishop Grau, Gaudí resigned over disagreements with the council, halting the construction for several years. The palace was completed between 1907 and 1915 by Ricardo Garcia Guereta. During the Spanish Civil War, the building served as the local headquarters of the Falange. In 1956 Julià Castelltort, a Catalan, began restoration works to adapt the building as a bishop's residence. Later, Bishop Marcelo González Martín promoted the conversion to the current role of the palace, a museum of religious art called Museo de los Caminos, dedicated to the Way of Santiago.

Episcopal Palace (Astorga)

El castillo de Palacios de la Valduerna o castillo de los Bazán, como es conocido popularmente, es una fortaleza española situada en la villa de esta localidad, en la comarca de Tierra de La Bañeza, en León. Fue morada de los primeros Vizcondes de Palacios en el momento de mayor esplendor del señorío de los Bazán.
En conjunto, conformaba un trapecio irregular con una superficie de unos 600 m2 y los materiales de construcción fueron piedras unidas con argamasa y ladrillos para las bóvedas de las torres. Contaba con dos entradas, una principal al oeste para el señor, de la cual quedan restos, y otra secundaria en el lienzo este para la servidumbre o los animales.
Con el tiempo el castillo cayó en desuso y ya en 1753, según el Catastro de Ensenada, la construcción estaba parcialmente derruida y se usaba para trabajar unos pequeños huertos.​ En 1906-1908, según el Catálogo Monumental de España obra de Manuel Gómez-Moreno, el edificio estaba en derribo, conservándose dos de los cubos (nordeste y suroeste), una galería de arcos al sur y una puerta con arco ojival al este.​ A mediados de siglo, la construcción se vio afectada por el Decreto de 22 de abril de 1949, por el cual todos los castillos de España quedaban bajo la protección del Estado independientemente de su estado de conservación.
Se conserva parte del lienzo oeste de la muralla y la torre que sirvió de hábitat. Esta presenta dos ventanales con arco de medio punto y bóveda de cañón en la techumbre, con un espesor de los muros de tres metros en las dos primeras plantas y de medio metro en la parte alta de la torre. La entrada se realiza por la planta baja y se asciende a través de una escalera interior. A pesar de la restauración llevada a cabo en 1982, gracias a la cual el propietario del inmueble la convirtió en vivienda, la asociación Hispania Nostra mantiene el castillo en su lista roja de patrimonio debido a la ruina progresiva que representan sus restos a excepción de la torre,​ y no es posible su visita al tratarse de una propiedad privada.
