Description

This church-fortress is the work of the master builder Mahoma Rami, and adjoins the tower of a previous castle standing on the site. The exterior has two tower-buttresses and a walkway, and a Gothic doorway with plasterwork decoration. The church has a single nave divided into three sections, a polygonal apse and side chapels between the buttresses, along which runs a gallery. The choir stalls have a flat carved wooden ceiling, decorated and painted with heraldic and geometric motifs, as well as an inscription with the name of the master craftsman in charge of the building work and the date the church was completed. The interior is profusely decorated with paintings and carved plasterwork, featuring geometric and plant motifs which completely cover the walls. Highlights include the ribbed vaults decorated with black dragons, and the large floral late-Gothic rose windows. This is a prime example of the Mudéjar architecture of Aragon, and has been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO.
