Zuheros Castle, locally known as Castillo de Zuheros, lies on a rock in the village with the same name in the province of Córdoba in Spain.
It is possible that the first castle at this site was already built in the late 9th century to guard the road between Córdoba and Granada.
Zuheros Castle was probably built in the 11th or 12th century when the area was ruled by the Zirid dynasty.
The castle is somehow connected to a siege by St. Ferdinand III, King of Castile, but how I do not know. At some time Zuheros Castle was conquered by the Christians.
During the 14th century a palatial building in Renaissance style was added by the Lords of the House of Córdoba. This palace is said to be designed by the architect Hernán Ruiz I.
This was all the historical info I was able to find, so if you know more; please mail me! Opposite the castle, across the little square, sits another fortification. I don't know if that was part of the castle at some time.
At present Zuheros Castle can be visited for a small fee. Sadly enough when I visited it was too late, so it was closed. Too bad, this is a lovely little castle, but I enjoyed a great sunset!
