Penyafort Castle is one of the gateways to the natural park of Foix. A walk through its vegetable garden is a discovery for the senses, giving you a detailed look at the vegetables and herbs that are grown in the area. You can also take a tour of the grounds where the monks of the convent used to keep a vegetable garden in the olden days.

In addition to the vegetable garden, a guide can take you around the different areas of the castle, which make up the 10th century estate. As the area under Muslim rule was shrinking, small castles started being built; this was also the case with Penyafort—the birthplace, circa 1185, of a man who in time would become known as St. Raymond of Penyafort.

In 1601, in the year of St. Raymond's canonization, a small Dominican convent started expanding its facilities. During the Spanish confiscation of 1836, the convent passed into the hands of the Puig i Llagostera family, who essentially gave it its present form.

During the Civil War, the church and cloister were set up to be used as a prison.
