Since the beginning of the 16th century, various fortifications, in the Ferrol and the Ares estuaries, were built to avoid the attacks of enemies. The La Palma Castle is one of them. It was conceived in a military fortification style which responded to its defensive military strategic function. Its construction ended in 1597. Subsequently it suffered various modifications of the armory, as well as the reconstruction of some arches, leaving intact the moat. The sentry boxes were added in the 18th century. This is a defensive construction in a predominantly Neoclassical style. The first castle was built during the reign of Felipe II and it was redesigned between 1731-1775. It is one of the most representative examples of the major "fortified batteries" of the 18th century. It was used to defend the Ferrol tidal inlet and for land offensives. The castle has a system of protruding walls, covering the flanks of the lateral walls. It follows the academic model of its time - the Enlightenment - in this case, through the application of mathematics to the art of war. It has a geometric layout and stonework. It was designed by the military engineers Francisco Montaigú, Juan de la Ferriére and Juan Vergel. There are magnificent views from the castle, particularly for the tidal inlet and the A Palma castle. The building was recently acquired by Ferrol Council and will be renovated and refurbished for cultural use.

Castle of Andrade (in Galician, Castelo dos Andrade) is a medieval Galician fortification located in the area of Pontedeume, Province of A Coruña (Spain).
History
The construction of the castle began in the 13th century, by order of the lords of Andrade. According to ancient sources, the building had a tunnel that connected the house of the Andrade family with the castle, whose members and relatives were to seek refuge during periods of war. In 1467, the fortress was attacked by Afonso de Lanzós, who was captured and locked in the castle by order of Nuno Freire de Andrade, o Mao.
One of the most famous owners of the castle was Fernán Pérez de Andrade, lord of Pontedeume and Ferrol, to whom Henry II of Castile, granted him all the lands that went from the castle to Cabo Prior (Ferrol). In 1367 Fernán ordered the remodeling of the castle, which was completed by the year 1371.
The castle is located on an isolated crag, and at the time of its construction, was surrounded by a moat, and had a place of arms and drawbridge. The tower is square, and the walls have three widths. The building consists of three floors, with a height of twenty meters, with views to Ares, Betanzos and Ferrol.

Castle of Andrade

Right in the centre of the old town, the San Antón castle seems to keep watch over the entrance to the port. This castle was a means of defense which the Coruna people relied heavily on, built in the 16C under Phillip II. Some illustrious characters, like the wiseman Malaspina were held captive in his blockhouses. Today it accommodates the archeological and history museum as well as a remarkable collection of silverware.

Castle of San Antón

Moeche Castle was built in the 14th century by the Andrades Family.
It has an octogonal groundplan, and its walls are 10 m high and 3 m thick. Its gatekeep is 18 m tall and it is the only part of the castle protecting its walls from the outside. It was under siege and taken by the Irmandinos uprising.
Every year on the 3rd week of august this event is commemorated at Moeche.
The Castle Today
The Moeche Castle has been restored recently, but in order to visit the interior of the castle, you'll have to request the keys from the local town hall.
