Olivenza castle was built by the Order of the Temple. After being owned by the Portuguese, Spanish and French, the fortress was severely damaged during the Spanish War of Independence, but in 1975 it was restored and turned into the town's ethnographic museum. Its tall, thick walls are made of masonry and have large towers with blind walls. Originally it had three doorways and a keep standing over 40 metres high, which still fascinates visitors. From here you can enjoy wonderful views of Olivenza.

The Miraflores Castle, a majestic fortress built of rock, dressed stone and masonry, stands on a hilltop of the same name, not far from border with Portugal, controlling the road to Badajoz. 
History tells us that the Portuguese were the first occupants of the castle in the 17th century. A hundred years later it passed into the hands of the Castilian Spanish and was handed over first to the Order of the Temple and then the Order of Alcántara. Numerous battles between the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal took place here.
On your visit you can enjoy a stroll round the renovated castle now converted into a hotel. The walled precinct has an impressive keep, a parade ground, water cistern, dungeons and a chapel, just a few of the secrets to be discovered inside the fortress.

Miraflores Castle

The Alcazaba of Badajoz is an ancient Moorish citadel in Badajoz, Extremadura, western Spain. The alcazaba as it now appears was built by the Almohads in the 12th century, although it probably existed from the 9th century, when Badajoz was founded. In the 11th and 12th centuries it was the residence of the rulers of the taifa of Badajoz.
It was declared a national monument of Spain in 1931.
The citadel measures 400 by 200 metres (1,310 ft × 660 ft). It is bounded to the north by the Guadiana river and to the east by the Rivillas torrent. The less steep parts of the slopes and other strategically weak points are defended by towers. The whole line of walls features a parapet, while the barbican and the ditch which once added protection have disappeared.
