Montánchez Castle is in the province of Cáceres, it stands on a hill near to the town from which it takes its name. The origins of this fortress, declared a Spanish cultural heritage site, date back to Roman times. Witness to this is the main body of the castle. The rest of the building dates from the 12th century during Almohad occupation of the area, to which the three water cisterns still preserved within the fortress bare witness.
Once in Christian hands under the administration of the Order of Santiago, a large number of elements were added to Montánchez Castle, including the wall which surrounds the enclosure. Additionally, in the interior you will still find the keep and the wine cellars, and on the outside a pond and a hermitage built during the 17th century.
