Built in the 15th century by the Vivero family as a noble home. The family became linked to the region's history when the future Catholic Monarchs got married in their castle.
Construction started in the 13th century, but it is not until the 15th century that the structure acquires today's configuration. Inside, the building was shaped as a 'U' around the cortyard, which today has been made into the parliament floor. During the Comunidades war, it was peacefully occupied by the comunero troops. The castle was the General Assembly of Castilla y León.

The Castle of Simancas (also known as Simancas Castle) is a fortified complex in Simancas, central Spain. The castle stands in the center of town and houses the current Archivo General de Simancas.
History
The site of the castle was at one time a Moorish fortress. In the 15th century the House of Enríquez constructed a new fortification on top of the existing ruins, restored the Moorish walls, and added a chapel. The new castle was seized by the Spanish Crown during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs and turned into a prison. In 1540 the Archivo General de Simancas was established in the castle, the first official archive of Castile. Felipe II transformed the castle into General Archive of the Kingdom, which housed one of the most important archives in Europe with 35 million documents. The castle was put under the protection of the Spanish government in 1949. In 1952 renovations were enacted to reduce risk to the archives. The castle is now open to tourists and researchers.
Fortification and structure
The castle's foundation, walls, battlements, gates, and bridges all date back to the late 15th century, mostly attributed from 1467 to 1480. The end of the reconquesta in 1492 ended the immediate need for a large defensive fortification, and as such the castle's various reconstructions molded it into an administrative building. Later additions to the castle incorporate aspects of the Herrerian style of architecture. The current archive housed within the castle has been protected with fireproofing measures, and the 15th century chapel built by the Enríquez has been restored.

Castle of Simancas

Trigueros Castle lies, in the village of Trigueros del Valle, in the province of Valladolid in Spain.
The history of Trigueros Castle isn't very well known. It is not built on a strategic position because, although located on a small hill in the village, it is dominated by other higher hills. So, the castle was probably more a fortified residence than a military strength. Also the name of the village church, an older building on a higher hill; Santa Maria del Castillo, seems to indicate that the most suitable place of a preceding strength already had been taken.
By its groundplan and disposition it seems to have been build in the 14th century. And reformed and completed in the 1453 as indicated by the coat of arms of Gutierre de Robres (or Robles) and his wife Maria de Guevara, placed above the entrance gate.
Its groundplan is a rectangle of about 56 by 40 meters with rectangular towers at the corners. These towers were only slightly higher than the curtain walls and on of them was inhabitable. In the center of the northern wall stands the square keep with 2 meter thick and 10 meter wide walls. The gatetower is in the center of the western wall and gave access to the courtyard through 3 successive, heavy, wooden doors.
Beneath the courtyard are three vaulted underground rooms which were used as stables and for storage. On the courtyard are remnants of walls of several buildings and a cistern.
Closely surrounding the castle and following its outline is a ruined second enclosure of about 70 by 50 meters, reinforced with cylindrical towers. These towers are equipped with artillery slits dating back to around 1500.
During the revolt of the Comuneros, the vassals of Robles assaulted and sacked the castle to take revenge for the abuse that Robles committed on them.
This is a pretty castle ruin, which was being restored when I visited, thus preventing access. I don't know if it is normally accessible. There are numerous underground spaces in the little hills directly surrounding the castle. They seem to be used by the villagers for storage. At some of these the ceiling had collapsed which gave me the possibility to look inside. Some of these spaces seemed very large; almost like halls. I was told that some of these were cellars made and owned by the villagers for storage. Some of them could be as old as 500 years.

Trigueros Castle

Torrelobatón Castle is situated in the province of Valladolid in Castile, Spain. Built as an expression of the strength of the influential Enríquez family, whose capital was at Medina de Rioseco, the castle is one of the most important and best-preserved fortresses in Valladolid. In the historical epic film El Cid with Charlton Heston the castle played the role of Vivar, hometown of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar - El Cid.
Construction
The castle was begun in 1406, when Don Alfonso Enríquez, 1st Admiral of Castile, obtained licence from John II to erect a fortress in Torrelobatón; the only fortification there was a modest stone enclosure surrounding the village. The castle was involved in the Revolt of the Comuneros against Charles I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V).
Location
The Torrelobaton Castle is situated on the outskirts of the village on almost the same level, as is the case with many 15th-century seigneurial Castilian fortresses. It has a square ground-plan, with circular turrets at three of the corners and the keep set into the fourth, protecting the gate. The castle was surrounded by an enceinte, of which there are some remains, and a ditch, now mostly filled in.
The keep
The entrance to the Torrelobaton Castle courtyard is through a gate with a round-headed arch protected by a portcullis. The keep is the most interesting feature of the fortress. Of considerable height, the upper part is protected by eight turrets supported on accordion brackets, one at each corner and one in the middle of each wall .
Castillan fortresses
The castle, constructed in limestone ashlar, belongs to a large group of Castilian fortresses of which the most outstanding feature is the keep, often reaching monumental proportions. In addition to the defensive function, the keep served to intimidate the population and discourage rebellion, especially if sited, as at Torrelobatón, on the side of the castle nearest the village.
Traditional construction
Torrelobatón Castle otherwise lies in the tradition of seigneurial fortresses that, except in some older castles or in those built on raised ground, have a quadrilateral ground-plan with the keep set into one of the corners. The most unusual features of Torrelobatón are the turrets on the keep and the straight parapet.

Gothic noble fortress, built in the 15th century by the descendants to Pedro García Herrera, major-general of Castile and nephew of the bishop of Palencia Sancho de Rojas, founder of the Manor of Ampudia.
The building is shaped as a trapezoid, with four square turrets in the corners and the front is symmetrical. Today the castle houses a collection of art objects and antiques.
Don Pedro de Ayala, the Count of Salvatierra, was one of the owners of the castle. He fought in favour of the comunera cause in the battle of Ampudia, which confronted the followers of the emperor and the troops of the Acuña Bishop.

Castillo de Ampudia

Montealegre Castle lies, in the village by the same name, in the province of Valladolid in Spain.
The name Montealegre appears during the reign of King Alfonso VIII as a Lordship of an Alfonso Téllez. The name continues to be connected to this noble family, when a century later there appears a Lord of Montealegre; Tello Perez de Meneses. He probably built the first castle, more primitive than the present one, on this site somewhere around 1300. The Lordship of Montealegre was then situated on the border line of defense with the kingdom of Leon.
The present castle, with its austere and strong appearance, has a slightly trapezial groundplan, with four strong towers at its corners. Three of them are rectangular and the fourth is pentagonal and served as the keep. In the middle of its curtain walls it is fitted with slender circular towers. The height of its walls range from 18 to 24 meters with a thickness of 4 meters. With its functional and horizontal impression it represents an adoption of a Mediterranean-Arab castle, a style known in Europe from the 13th century.
The Military order of Santiago and later King Alfonso X, the Wise, granted several rights and privileges to Montealegre. And it soon became part of the Lordship of Alburquerque. It was elevated to a County by Don Enrique Manuel de Villena. Later it belonged to the Guzmán family. During the reign of King Felipe IV a Martin Guzmán y Rojas becomes Marquess de Montealegre. He is the one that places his coat of arms above the entrance gate.
The history of this castle confirms its strength, since it was never taken by force. King Pedro I, the Cruel, tried to conquer it when its lord; Don Juan Alfonso de Alburquerque, was absent. But when his troops besieged the castle he hadn't counted on the fierce resistance of its lady; Doña Isabel de Meneses. So after a long and useless siege the king had to raise the siege. Two centuries later, in the 16th century, the Castilian Communeros who had revolted against the emperor Carlos, also tried to take the castle by force. They also failed and had to resort to treason to open its doors.
At the present its exterior is restored but its interior is completely dismantled since it was used as a cereal silo. I don't know what its present use is. It's not accessible. The castle lies on the western end of the village, almost on the end of a large hill and offers superb views of the surrounding countryside in all directions.
