Perched on top of a hill, Davalillo Castle dates from the thirteenth century and was part of a chain of forts built along the border between the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile, on both sides of the River Ebro. It still preserves most of its external walls, constructed in ashlar masonry, and the keep, which houses the surprise of a small Romanesque chapel. At the foot of the hill there is the hermitage of Santa Maria de Davalillo, built in ashlar and rubble masonry between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The castle is about five kilometers from the town of San Asensio and it is possible to drive up to the hermitage. From the hermitage to the top of the hill there is a short but steep trail, protected by wooden railings. Once up, there’s a beautiful view of the River Ebro valley.
