The Castle of Los Luna presides over the beautiful medieval town of Cornago, in La Rioja Baja
The Castle of Los Luna presides over the beautiful medieval town of Cornago, in La Rioja Baja. It is located in the highest part of the town, on a hill, and its stately silhouette is visible from kilometers away, next to the church of San Pedro.
The castle is a quadrangular construction of ashlar masonry with towers at each corner and a gateway with a pointed arch. It dates from the fifteenth century, although there is evidence that it was built in the location of a former fortress. It belonged to Los Luna, a powerful family of Aragonese origin with two particularly famous members: Pedro Martinez de Luna, who became known as the "Papa Luna" Benedict XIII, and Álvaro de Luna, Constable of Castile. His daughter Maria de Luna lived in the castle and made several reforms in it.
In a small rock located between the castle and the church you can see several dinosaur footprints, which are abundant in this area of La Rioja.
