If only for its huge rearing lion, engraved in stone over the tower keep, it merits a visit. It is the heraldic emblem of the Silva family, the counts of Cifuentes. It was built by this family in the 15thcentury.
HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
We can go around its big courtyard, and its almost square lower level, which indicates by its size and the time it was built that it was used more as a residence than as a defensive fortress. Two interesting cubes are signs of the barrier and the moat that protected the entry gate to the enclosure, and of which there are no remains. Three towers, two circular, the other square, and the tower comprise the rest of the premises.

Juan de Silva, the first count of Cifuentes, began the fortress construction in the 14thcentury, and his grandson, of the same name, would later finish on his behalf. It was provided with artillery and garrison in the 16thcentury.

El castillo de San Silvestre es un castillo situado en el municipio de Novés, en la provincia de Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha, España).
Actualmente, está considerado como BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural) (fue declarado Monumento histórico-artístico perteneciente al Tesoro Artístico Nacional mediante decreto de 3 de junio de 1931​).
Situación
Se asienta en la antigua villa de San Silvestre, de la que solo queda la pequeña parroquia que solo se abre el 31 de diciembre, y una casa de labor.
El acceso al castillo puede realizarse desde la localidad de Novés en dirección a Santa Cruz del Retamar. Tomando el camino que surge a la izquierda inmediatamente después de pasar el puente sobre el arroyo de San Silvestre, en dirección hacia unos colegios.
Historia
El castillo de San Silvestre fue construido por el comendador de la Orden de Santiago, Gutierre de Cárdenas, en el siglo XV, al igual que el castillo de la Vela (Maqueda).
Descripción y características
El castillo de San Silvestre es pequeño, similar al castillo de Maqueda. La planta del edificio es cuadrada y conserva tres de sus fachadas, una de ellas casi completa, lo que permite observar algunos detalles de su construcción.
Las murallas poseen torres cilíndicas con base troncocónica en los ángulos y centros, así como el almenado. El almenado presenta la particularidad, única en la provincia, de que tiene dobles merlones de mampostería y ladrillo. Al igual que las del castillo de Caudilla y el de Maqueda, también pertenecientes a Gutierre de Cárdenas, las saeteras, de granito, están en forma de cruz de Santiago, con una abertura redondeada en la parte inferior, forma que tienen también las de las torres, éstas con tiros frontales y cruzados.
La puerta está orientada hacia el este y debió tener un puente levadizo sobre el foso​ que se observa al pie de los muros. La puerta posee un blasón y tuvo un matacán del que aún quedan los canes.
El castillo de San Silvestre carecía de torre del homenaje. Bajo el edificio se conservan dos grandes salas abovedadas a modo de sótano, tan largas como el edificio, y es posible que existan más ahora enterradas.
Estado de conservación
Se encuentra en estado de ruina consolidada. Es de propiedad privada, y se halla en una finca dedicada, entre otras actividades, a la siembra de cereal. Se encuentra protegido por la Declaración genérica del Decreto de 22 de abril de 1949, y la Ley 16/1985 sobre el Patrimonio Histórico Español.

Castillo de San Silvestre

El castillo de la Vela o castillo de Maqueda es un castillo situado en el municipio de Maqueda, en la provincia de Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha, España). En 1931 fue declarado Monumento Histórico-Artístico. En marzo de 2013, el Estado español sacó a subasta el castillo por 9,5 millones de euros.
Historia
Se conjetura que en tiempos remotos se situó en su emplazamiento un puesto vigilante romano, pero lo que es seguro es que, hacia el año 981, y por orden de Almanzor, el arquitecto Fatho ben Ibrahim el Omeya, llamado Aben el Caxeri de Toledo, constructor de las grandes mezquitas de Gebal Berida y de Adabegin en Toledo y célebre por su saber y sus viajes al Oriente, aumentó y perfeccionó una fortaleza preexistente.​ En 1083 cayó en poder de Alfonso VI de Castilla sin gran resistencia. En 1153 pasó a ser señorío privado de Fernando Yáñez por concesión real. Poco después, en 1177, Alfonso VIII, tras la toma de Cuenca, donó Maqueda y su tierra a la Orden de Calatrava; quizá esta fue la que ordenó en este siglo decimosegundo rodearlo de una muralla que también circundaba la villa y la iglesia mayor y cuyos restos todavía son perceptibles (torres de Vela y de las Infantas). En Maqueda estuvo la cabeza de una encomienda de la Orden y en ella residía el correspondiente Comendador; esta encomienda tenía también agregado el castillo y tierra de San Silvestre junto a Toledo.
Entre 1196 y 1198 resistió con éxito los asedios de los almorávides y en 1434 el poderoso Condestable y valido de Juan II don Álvaro de Luna se apropió de Maqueda y San Silvestre entregando a cambio a la Orden de Calatrava sus villas de Arjona y Arjonilla. Al caer el valido, el castillo, al mando del alcaide Fernando de Ribadeneyra, fiel al condestable, resistió el cerco de Juan II, pero terminó rindiéndose y el castillo volvió a la Corona. Reinando Enrique IV, su hermano Alfonso el Inocente, declarado rey usurpador en la Farsa de Ávila, e instalado en su corte de Arévalo, cedió el señorío de Maqueda y su tierra al cortesano judeoconverso Álvar Gómez de Ciudad Real el Viejo, abuelo del humanista del mismo nombre, quien lo cambió en 1465 al cardenal Mendoza por varias villas en Guadalajara. Este lo cedió poco después a su pariente el arzobispo de Toledo Alonso Carrillo de Acuña a cambio de las villas y fortalezas de Jadraque y Alcorlo en la Alcarria. Poco después el arzobispo vendió la villa y el castillo al comendador mayor de León y contador del reino Gutierre de Cárdenas, quien lo reconstruyó y amplió. Isabel la Católica vivió durante algún tiempo en el castillo acompañada por su amiga Beatriz de Bobadilla, hija del alcaide del castillo y después marquesa de Moya.
El castillo de la Vela, levantado sobre las bases de la precedente fortaleza árabe, nunca fue terminado de construir, al menos en su interior. En el siglo XV fue reconstruido y ampliado por Gutierre de Cárdenas. Al trasladarse los dueños del castillo al municipio toledano de Torrijos, la fortaleza quedó sin uso y fue deteriorándose, aunque permaneció en la familia Cárdenas hasta el siglo XIX, cuando se abolieron los señoríos.​ El Gobierno español instaló en su interior un cuartel de la Guardia Civil, dándole así una función y un organismo que lo conservara.
Descripción y características
El castillo de Maqueda se encuentra en un extremo del viejo recinto amurallado del municipio, que fue cercado en el siglo XII o poco después. La planta del castillo es rectangular y ocupa dos niveles distintos de terreno. Sus muros alcanzan 3,5 metros de espesor y están protegidos por fosos en dos de sus lados y tres torres circulares en los ángulos al sur y mitad del lienzo este. Posteriormente se añadió una torre más. El almenado del castillo de la Vela es similar al del castillo de San Silvestre en Novés, que también fue construido por la familia Cárdenas.
La puerta principal está orientada al norte, lleva el escudo del matrimonio Cárdenas y Enríquez, autores de su reconstrucción, y está protegida por un buen matacán de sillería y ladrillo, con una aspillera redonda y cruciforme. Tras el portón había una fuerte reja de forja machihembrada que cerraba el paso.
El adarve y el coronamiento, de 2,5 metros de altura, está bien conservado y presenta saeteras cada dos merlones que se emparejan dos a dos con un parapeto.
Estado de conservación
Es propiedad del Ministerio del Interior de España y albergaba un cuartel de la Guardia Civil. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico Artístico el 3 de junio de 1931. Bajo la protección de la Declaración genérica del Decreto de 22 de abril de 1949, y la Ley 16/1985 sobre el Patrimonio Histórico Español.

Castillo de la Vela

El castillo de Polán es una fortificación medieval de la localidad española de Polán, en la provincia de Toledo.
Descripción
El castillo se ubica en la localidad toledana de Polán, unos pocos kilómetros al suroeste de la capital provincial, en la comunidad autónoma de Castilla-La Mancha. Se encuentra en el norte del casco urbano y su estado es ruinoso. La parte mejor conservada sería una fachada rota en su centro, que deja a ambos lados dos fuertes torres, cuyo muro de unión desapareció.

Castillo de Polán

The Alcázar of Toledo (Spanish: Alcázar de Toledo, IPA: [alˈkaθaɾ ðe toˈleðo]) is a stone fortification located in the highest part of Toledo, Spain. Once used as a Roman palace in the 3rd century, it was restored under Charles I (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) and his son Philip II of Spain in the 1540s. In 1521, Hernán Cortés was received by Charles I at the Alcázar, following Cortes' conquest of the Aztecs. Most of the alcázar was rebuilt, or restored, between 1939 and 1957 after the Siege of the Alcázar of the Spanish Civil War.
Spanish Civil War
During the Spanish Civil War, Colonel José Moscardó Ituarte held the building against overwhelming Spanish Republican forces in the Siege of the Alcázar. The incident became a central piece of Spanish Nationalist lore, especially the story of Moscardó's son Luis. The Republicans took 16-year-old Luis hostage, and demanded that the Alcázar be surrendered or they would kill him. Luis told his father, "Surrender or they will shoot me." His father replied, "Then commend your soul to God, shout 'Viva Cristo Rey' and die like a hero."
Moscardó refused to surrender. Contemporary reports indicated that the Republicans then murdered Moscardó's son. Other historians have reported that Luis was not in fact shot until a month later "in reprisal for an air raid". The dramatic story also camouflages the fact that the fate of a number of male hostages, mainly from the Guardia Civil, taken into the Alcázar at the beginning of the siege is unclear. Some sources say the men "were never heard of again". However at least one journalist who visited the Alcázar in the immediate aftermath of its liberation saw a number of prisoners chained to a railing in a cellar.
The events of the Spanish Civil War at the Alcázar made the structure a symbol for Spanish Nationalism and inspired the naming of El Alcázar, a far-right newspaper that began during the civil war and ended during the Spanish transition to democracy as the mouthpiece for Búnker, a faction of Francoists who opposed reform after Francisco Franco's death.
By the end of the siege, the building had been severely damaged. After the war, it was rebuilt. It now houses the Castilla-La Mancha Regional Library ("Biblioteca Autonómica") and the Museum of the Army ("Museo del Ejército"), the latter having previously been housed in the Salón de Reinos in Madrid.

Alcázar of Toledo

The Castle of San Servando is a medieval castle in Toledo, Spain, near the Tagus River. It was begun as a monastery, occupied first by monks and later by the Knights Templar.
In 1874 the castle was named a national monument. The fortress was depicted in El Greco's painting View of Toledo.

Benedictines
Evidence exists of an ancient monastery attached to a basilica of the same name, possibly founded in the 7th century. In 1080, Cardinal Richard of St. Victor, a monk of the ancient Abbey of St. Victor in Marseille, was sent as the legate of Pope Gregory VII to the Council of Burgos held that year. One of his mandates was to ensure the adoption of the Roman Rite, replacing the ancient Mozarabic Rite used by the Christians of Iberia for centuries. He carried specific instructions for the restoration of San Servando and its adoption of Roman liturgical practice.
After surviving for several centuries under Muslim rule, when the city was conquered by the Christian army of King Alfonso VI of Castile in 1085, both he and his wife, Constance of Burgundy, became generous benefactors of the basilica and rebuilt the monastery. According to John Ormsby, the English translator of "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Alfonso VI called the castle "San Servando" after a Spanish martyr, a name subsequently modified into San Servan (in which form it appears in the "Poem of the Cid"), San Servantes, and San Cervantes. Mr. Ormsby mentions that "there is a complete history of the Cervantes family from the tenth century down to the seventeenth extant under the title "Illustrious Ancestry, Glorious Deeds, and Noble Posterity of the Famous Nuino Alfonso, Alcaide of Toledo," written in 1648 Rodrigo Mendez Silva." On the side of the mountain, near the Castle, a poem by Miguel de Cervantes was enshrined in 2005, four hundred years after Miguel de Cervantes wrote it. A picture of the poem is at panoramio.com.
On 11 March 1088, the king offered the monastery to the Holy See on the condition that it be permanently administered by the Abbey of St. Victor, along with all its goods and benefits. This arrangement was approved by Pope Urban II, who was elected the day after the documents for the donation were drawn up, on 20 February 1089. He entrusted the task to Cardinal Richard, by then himself Abbot of St. Victor. After that point, the monastery came under the authority of the Abbey of St. Victor and French monks began to occupy the Spanish monastery, introducing the Rule of St. Benedict.
King Alfonso saw the monastery as a bulwark of Christian presence in the region, and on 13 February 1099, made a donation of the Church of Santa María de Alficén, and of the community surrounding it, which was a traditional Mozarabic territory. He gave the monastery the objective of maintaining this identity among the populace. He further founded a monastery of Benedictine nuns to be attached to the church. Both monastic communities were charged with providing care and hospitality to the poor of the region and to travelers.
The monastery was destroyed by Saracen attacks in 1110, and the monks returned to Marseille. It was at this point that the Monastery of San Servando entered a new phase of its existence, as it became the possession of the Archbishop of Toledo and the cathedral chapter.
Knights Templar
King Alfonso VIII gave the monastery to the Knights Templar, who converted the monastery into a fortress in order to protect the Puente de Alcántara against a possible Muslim attack. With the disappearance of the Muslim threat and the dissolution of the Templars in 1312, the fortress lost its importance and was neglected. Today tours of the castle are conducted about the alleged haunting of the site by a miscreant knight, Don Nuño Alvear, who supposedly died after being shown his many victims in a vision.

Castle of San Servando

Escalona Castle, locally known as Castillo de Escalona, lies in the town by the same name, in the province of Toledo in Spain.
The fortified town of Escalona sits on a 25 meters high elevation of the land, next to the Alberche river. The town was, in origin, a Moorish fortification which was conquered by King Alfonso VI of Castile after a hard battle. He made it his base for attacks on Toledo. It was repopulated by Diego and Domingo Alvarez and was granted privileges by King Alfonso VII in 1130.
By the end of the 13th century the castle was donated to Don Juan Manuel, brother of King Sabio and in the 14th century it participated in the rebellion against count Alvaro Osorio. King Juan II yielded it to Don Alvaro de Luna, who transformed it into a sumptuous palace, which returned to the king after the execution of Don Alvaro.
King Enrique IV yielded it to Don Juan Pacheco, Grand Master of the Order of Santiago and Marquess of Villena, the most powerful lord in the kingdom. Later it came into the hands of the Duke of Arcos. In the 19th century the Duke of Frías repaired the damage which it had suffered during the systematic destruction by the French army of marshal Soult. At present Escalona Castle is private property.
The castle is a large strength of which a lot remains. It has three successive enclosures. The outer one is a low wall, conserved only to the west of the castle. The second is the main enclosure with high curtain walls and 7 large flanking towers, detached from the walls and only connected at the top by an arch, plus a large square tower that could be the original keep. Third is the inner enclosure, partially turned into a palace in the 15th century, where the present keep is.
The castle underwent reconstructions in the 13-14th century, but the most important reconstructions took place in the 15th century. The castle has a perimeter of 420 meters divided into a courtyard to the north and the residential buildings to the south. The town walls were connected to the castle and the river served as a moat.
