Alange Castle is located on the top of the Culebra hill, it is a strategic fortress from the 9th century and a place of battle for Arabs and Christians.
Castle was built by the Arabs in the 9th century and stands on a rocky hill, over the Matachel River, on the banks of the Alange reservoir.
This efence fortress is a strategic point from which access to the Silvr Way was controlled. Its inaccessibility makes it a privileged place. It was a place of numerous battles and sieges between Moors and Christians.
Although the castle was a great fortress, nowadays only three towers and the keep, made of strong brick walls and with numerous windows with horseshoe-shaped arches, remain. Some wells from the islamic period are also preserved.
You could reach it by a road that reached the highest point of the hill and through an arch made in the eastern wall, known as the Puerta del Sol.
A noteworthy part of the history contained within the walls of this fortess is the presense of the Arab chief Iba Marwan, who took shelter behind the walls of the castle for three months when attacked by the Christians, until he finally surrendered.
