The castle Bibra is a castle in the village of Bibra (at the castle) of the municipality grave field in Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringia .

History

In the small village of Bibra in the municipality of Grabfeld, there are remains of the small moated castle built by the Lords of Bibra in the 12th century and mentioned in 1119 as "Rubertus de Bybera" in the middle of the district in the northeastern part. The occupation at the time controlled and supported a north-south connection to the Werra valley in the direction of Untermaßfeld and Meiningen . It has a thousand-year history and was laid out in the Franconian style of a Franconian royal court in 1486. In the Peasants' War in 1525 and in the Thirty Years War it was destroyed and rebuilt again and again.

Parts of the outer wall and corner towers tell of the former castle. In one of the remaining, expanded houses, it has housed a small seminar center with 17 beds since 1994. The owner received in 2002 for the restoration of the castle Bibra the Thuringian listed price .

The Fasanerie hunting lodge is located in the Hermannsfeld district of the Rhönblick community in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

History

The forest belonging to the castle was already used as a zoo in the 16th century and served as a hunting ground for the dukes of Saxony-Meiningen from 1680 . Duke Georg I then had the simple, classical building with two corner pavilions built around 1790. During the Napoleonic period there were financial and occupational difficulties. Russian Cossacks plundered through the Werra Valley in 1813 . It was not until 1821 that the site was experienced under Duke Bernhard II.a new bloom as a ducal hunting and excursion destination. The forest became a nature park, where pheasants, red deer and fallow deer were kept in enclosures. After the revolution of 1848 the nature park was open to all citizens. Under Duke Georg II , the palace and park experienced their heyday when new breeding facilities and ponds were created. After the abdication of Duke Bernhard III. in November 1918 the property came to the Free State of Saxony-Meiningen and from 1920 to the State of Thuringia .

After the Second World War

After the Second World War , refugees and displaced persons as well as orphaned children found a home here. Because of the new inner-German border, units of the Red Army and later the border police then used the castle as accommodation. From the 1960s, the castle was used by the Henneberger School, among others . After 1977 it was largely empty. On the initiative of the population, the decay of the castle could be stopped.

After German reunification

The pheasantry was taken over by the municipality of Hermannsfeld and, from 1997, by the new municipality of Rhönblick and renovated with EU support. The Rhön Biosphere Reserve was also involved. A nature and bee trail was laid out in the forest. The short-term tenant of the entire property was later the non-profit association “Projekt 50”, which wanted to set up a communication center here. After disagreements was terminated him, 2015. Since 2013, new tenants have been running the “Jägerstube” restaurant and the castle is used for various community celebrations.

Jagdschloss Fasanerie

Die Glücksburg ist ein im 16. Jahrhundert vollendetes Schloss mit zwei Innenhöfen. Es befindet sich im nördlichen Teil der Altstadt von Römhild, Griebelstraße 28.

Geschichte

Das Schloss wurde 1465 durch Graf Friedrich II. der Linie Henneberg-Aschach von (1465–1488) erbaut, der seine Residenz von der Burg auf dem Hartenberg (die Hartenburg) in die Mauern der Stadt verlegte. Das noch im Baustil der Spätgotik errichtete Wohnschloss wurde 1491 durch Friedrichs Sohn und Nachfolger Graf Hermann VIII. (1488–1535) vollendet. Doch 1539 forderte ein Brand den Neubau des Schlosses. In den Jahren 1540 bis 1546 wurde das Schloss wieder aufgebaut und 1676 bis 1678 barock erweitert. Die Römhilder Grafen standen infolge der beiden Bauvorhaben bald am Rande des finanziellen Ruins. Das Schloss wurde später im Erbgang die Residenz der Grafen von Henneberg der Linie Henneberg-Aschach-Römhild und war von 1680 bis 1710 Residenz des in der Folge entstandenen Herzogtums Sachsen-Römhild. Die Namensgebung „Glücksburg“ erfolgte im Jahr 1680 durch Heinrich (Sachsen-Römhild).

Von 1945 bis 1948 wurde das Schloss Glücksburg als Heim für Kriegswaisen und danach bis 1961 als Jugendwerkhof "Rudolf Harbig" genutzt.

Die sich um zwei rechteckige Innenhöfe gruppierende kompakte Schlossanlage beherbergt heute die Verwaltung der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Gleichberge und ein Museum mit mehreren Spezialsammlungen.

Schloss Glücksburg (Römhild)

Elisabethenburg Palace (German: Schloss Elisabethenburg) is a Baroque palace located on the northwestern edge of Meiningen in Germany. Until 1918 it was the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen. The building was remodelled in the 19th century, and a dry moat added. The heavily rustic window surrounds, which now dominate the facade were added in 1845. Originally the windows had simple rectangular shaped frames made of sandstone. In 1918 a new Italian marble fountain was added. The interior decorations represent a gamut of architectural styles beginning with the Baroque frescoes commissioned by Bernard I through the Rococo and 19th century Empire styles.

The palace and its court orchestra have been associated with many famous musicians, and particularly with Hans von Bülow, Max Reger, and Johannes Brahms, who was a frequent guest there. The music archives hold a large collection of autograph scores, including many of Bach's, as well as a collection of historical instruments. The palace also has a very large court library, which was regularly used by Friedrich Schiller during his stay in the area.

Schloss Elisabethenburg

The Great Palace in Meiningen is a palace of the Dukes of Saxony-Meiningen from the 19th century. It is also known as the "Wittumspalais" or "Erbprinzenpalais".

Building

The Great Palace is a three-storey building with a richly structured facade in the style of the French Neo-Renaissance . On the street side it has a central projection with a balcony on pillars in front of it. On the ground floor there are rustic iron and marbled support columns in the foyer . From there, an elaborately designed staircase leads to the first floor, where all the walls of the stairwell are structured with pilasters that take up two thirds of the height of the room and close to a surrounding ledge. As a continuation of the pilasters to the stucco ceiling, the walls are decorated with statues in the form of caryatids and hermsMistake. The ceilings and walls of almost all rooms have elaborately designed stucco work , which during the GDR era were "hidden" with suspended ceilings and exposed walls. They come from the time of the renovation and have been restored. Today the palace is used as a health center with doctor's offices , pharmacy and therapists. The total usable area is 1630 m². In the large rooms of the practices, room-in-room systems with glazed walls and ceilings are installed, which allow a clear view of the richly decorated stucco ceilings. 

History
The palace was built from 1821 to 1823 in the classical style by the architect Johann Andreas Schaubach as a Wittumspalais for the Duchess Luise Eleonore . In 1863 a renovation and an extension took place under the direction of senior building officer Otto Hoppe and the building received its dominant and representative shape in the style of the neo-renaissance that still exists today. After Duke Bernhard II's forced abdication in 1866 , the Great Palace became his residence. In 1890 the Hereditary Prince and later Duke Bernhard III took over the palace . his residence. Even after the end of the duchy in 1918 it remained in the possession of the duchy of Saxony-Meiningen until 1945.

The Great Palace survived the Second World War unscathed. After the expropriation of the ducal estates, a teacher training institute was initially based here. Then the district office of Meiningen moved in . The building, which was called the Council of the District from 1952 to 1990, fulfilled this function until 1999. After a few years of vacancy, the Great Palace was extensively renovated from 2007 to 2009. Since then there has been a "health center" with several medical practices and other health facilities.

Great Palace (Meiningen)

Irmelshausen, on the old border between East and West Germany, is one of the most appealing castles in this region of Germany (Franconia). Irmelshausen is first mentioned in the year 800 when Emhild, the Abbess of Milz and a relative of Charlemagne, gave the village to the Counts of Henneberg. In 1354, upon the marriage of Countess Elisabeth with the Count Eberhard of Württemberg, the village was sold to the Bishopric of Würzburg. Twenty-two years later the bishopric transferred it to Berthold von Bibra. Since that time, it has been greatly enlarged and has been one of the main seats of the Bibra family. Parts of the castle were previously taller but during a remodeling in 1854 the half-timbered sections were lowered to the present height.

Until recently it was the site of the Bibra family archives which were fortunately moved to Irmelshausen from Bibra prior to the German Peasants' War in 1524-25. The second seat of the von Bibra family, through diplomacy it escaped attack and destruction in both the Peasants' War of 1525 and the Thirty Years' War of 1618-48 when almost all the surrounding castles were taken and sacked.

It is said that the first enemy soldier to enter the castle during World War II did so on April 8, 1945. The American Col. Vennard Wilson was served tea, noted the contents of the castle and ordered it off limits to troops.

The castle itself, the two farms and the forest is owned by the Bibra family (older and younger lines) and the adopted daughter of the Bibra family who is by birth a Guttenberg and by marriage a Stauffenberg.

Besides the five-sided castle, the late Gothic church with its numerous and beautiful Bibra gravestones from the 16th and 17th centuries is worth visiting.

Irmelshausen Water Castle

Die Burgruine Osterstein ist eine mittelalterliche Burgruine in der Gemarkung Henfstädt bei Themar im Landkreis Hildburghausen in Thüringen.

Geschichte

Ersterwähnung

Die Osterburg ist höchstwahrscheinlich in der ersten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts entstanden. Erstmals erwähnt wurde die Burg in einer Elgersburger Urkunde vom 7. März 1268. Darin wurde die Osterburg mit ihrem Zubehör als dem benachbarten Amt Schleusingen gleichwertig erachtet und der Gräfin Sophia von Henneberg zum Leibgeding ausgestellt. Unter dem Zubehör der Burg ist der Vogteibezirk zu verstehen, aus dem später das Verwaltungsamt Themar hervorging.

Hieraus lässt sich folgern, dass die Osterburg wahrscheinlich im Zuge des Landausbaus der Grafschaft Henneberg als wehrhafter Verwaltungsmittelpunkt errichtet wurde. Die Burg lag im Zentrum des Themarer Amts an einem wichtigen Kreuzungspunkt der Werratalstraße mit einer anderen Altstraße, die aus dem Gleichberggebiet kommend unmittelbar an der Osterburg vorbei in nördliche Richtung zog.

Grafschaft Henneberg

Als Sitz eines Vogts als Vertreter der Landesherrschaft diente die Osterburg nur kurze Zeit. In der Hennebergischen Hauptteilung von 1274 fiel die Burg an die Hartenberger Linie der Grafen von Henneberg. Da bei dieser Teilung das Amt und auch die Stadt Themar geteilt wurden, ist höchstwahrscheinlich der Sitz des Vogtes von der Burg in die Stadt verlegt worden. Durch die Teilung des Amtes Themar entstanden für lange Zeit äußerst komplizierte Besitzverhältnisse, die sich natürlich auch auf die Osterburg auswirkten.

1359 sah sich die nach der Hartenburg bei Römhild benannte hennebergische Linie gezwungen, ihren Anteil an Stadt und Amt Themar, zu dem auch die Osterburg gehörte, an die Grafen Günter und Johann von Schwarzburg für 3000 Pfund Heller zu verpfänden. Das Einlösungsrecht des Pfandes ging 1371 mit der gesamten Grafschaft Henneberg-Hartenberg durch Verkauf an die Linie Henneberg-Aschach über. Nach einer heftigen Auseinandersetzung um das Erbe der 1378 ausgestorbenen Hartenberger Linie, bei der Themar und Marisfeld belagert und einige umliegende Dörfer verwüstet worden sein sollen, wurden die Grafen von Schwarzburg 1379 im Besitz der Osterburg bestätigt. Diese verpfändeten jedoch bereits 1380 die Burg an die Herren von Bibra.

1416 kaufte Wilhelm II. von Henneberg-Schleusingen († 1426), dessen Linie 1274 die andere Hälfte an Stadt und Amt Themar zugefallen war, das Einlöserecht der Burg vom Haus Schwarzburg zurück. Trotzdem blieb die Osterburg weiter Pfandeigentum der Herren von Bibra, welche wahrscheinlich viel zum Ausbau der Burg beitrugen. So forderte beispielsweise 1439 Graf Wilhelm von Henneberg die Herren von Bibra auf, die von ihnen errichteten Bauten am Graben und Zwinger der Osterburg wieder zu entfernen. Ob dies geschah, ist nicht bekannt. 1453 wurde das bisherige Pfandeigentum der Herren von Bibra in ein Lehen umgewandelt und die Burg von 1459 bis 1468 in drei Raten durch Henneberg-Schleusingen zurückgekauft.

Verfall der Burg

Nach dem Wiedererwerb der Osterburg scheint zwar für einige Jahre der Vogteisitz von Themar wieder auf die Burg verlegt worden zu sein, jedoch verlor in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 15. Jahrhunderts die Burg wahrscheinlich zunehmend an Bedeutung. Es wurden zwar noch verschiedene Erhaltungsmaßnahmen durchgeführt, aber bereits in den 90er Jahren des 15. Jahrhunderts wurde bei Gräfin Margarete von Henneberg-Schleusingen nachgefragt, ob die Osterburg nun aufgegeben werden soll. 1496 tauchte in den Amtsrechnungen von Themar letztmals ein Wächter auf der Burg auf, so dass mit ziemlicher Sicherheit davon ausgegangen werden kann, dass die Osterburg um 1500 offen gelassen wurde.

Beschreibung

Als Spornburg war die Osterburg bereits durch ihre natürliche Lage von drei Seiten relativ gut geschützt und vom Bergfried konnte man weite Teile des Werratals und der angrenzenden Hochflächen einsehen. Für die Versorgung der Burgmannschaft wirkte sich die relativ geringe Höhe des Burgberges gegenüber der Talsohle (circa 100 m) sicher ebenfalls positiv aus. Einen interessanten Einblick in die bauliche Situation auf der Osterburg um diese Zeit gibt ein 1459 aufgestelltes Teilinventar. Darin werden neben Waffen, Gerätschaften und Lebensmitteln auch einige Teile der Burganlage – Kemenate, Kapelle, verschiedene Türme, Backstube und Zwinger – erwähnt. Die Burgruine ist vollständig von einem Wall und Graben umgeben. Markantestes Wahrzeichen der Burg ist der erhaltene 20 m hohe Bergfried. Weiterhin sind der Südost-, der Nordwest- und der Ostturm erhalten geblieben. Diese dienten ursprünglich als Wehrtürme.

Bergfried
Der Bergfried ist das älteste noch erhaltene Bauwerk der Osterburg. Er ist aufgrund seiner baulichen Merkmale (rundbogige Zugangspforte, Buckelquadermauerwerk) in die erste Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts zu datieren. Da der Bergfried oft als erstes Bauwerk einer Burg entstand, dürften also auch die Anfänge der Burg in dieser Zeit liegen. Für eine frühere Entstehungszeit der Osterburg gibt es jedenfalls bis jetzt keinen Beweis. Der originale Eingang liegt über dem heutigen Zugang. 1743 und 1816 brannte der Bergfried aus. 1968 wurde eine neue Innentreppe eingebaut und ein neues Dach aufgesetzt. 1994 wurde der Dachaufbau vergrößert und die Turmstube ausgebaut. 1995 bekam der Bergfried eine neue Außentreppe mit Überdachung.

Brunnen
Der Burgbrunnen liegt unmittelbar gegenüber dem Bergfried innerhalb der Kernburg. Jahrhunderte lang wurde der Brunnen bis zum Rand mit Bauschutt aufgefüllt. Es war lange Zeit umstritten, ob es sich hier um einen Brunnen oder eine Zisterne handelt. Die Schachtarbeiten haben jedoch den Beleg für einen Tiefbrunnen erbracht. Es lässt sich vermuten, dass der Brunnen ursprünglich in einem geschlossenen Gebäude mit Zugang zum Bergfried integriert war.

Ost-Turm
Der Ost-Turm hat einen Durchmesser von 5,80 m und ragt noch 6,80 m auf. Im Inneren des Turms kann man zahlreiche Schießluken und Auflagesteine von ehemaligen Zwischenböden erkennen, die zeigen, dass der Turm ehemals mindestens drei Geschosse besaß. Im Zuge der Freilegung der Ostmauer wurde auch der Ost-Turm bis zu seinem ursprünglichen Niveau freigelegt und bekam damit wieder ein imposanteres Erscheinungsbild.

Südost-Turm
Der Südost-Turm hat mit 5,90 Meter den größten Durchmesser der noch erhaltenen drei Wehrtürme. Erhalten sind noch zwei Geschosse und der Maueransatz für ein weiteres Geschoss. Der Türdurchbruch im Grabenbereich stammt aus jüngerer Zeit. Im Deckengewölbe befindet sich ein Schlupfloch.

Nordwest-Turm
Der Nordwest-Turm gehört zu den wenigen erhaltenen Gebäudeteilen der Burg. Die erhaltene Turmhöhe (ohne Dach) beträgt rund zwölf Meter und der Basisdurchmesser nimmt etwa fünf Meter ein. Der Turm zeigte bedenkliche Bauschäden. An der Südseite war ein großer Mauerausbruch entstanden. Die Statik im Deckengewölbe war infolge starken Bewuchses beeinträchtigt, der Mauerring war nahezu vollständig verfallen.

Ostmauer
Die Ostmauer ist 1950 auf einer Länge von 30 Metern teilweise eingestürzt und wurde unter Schuttmassen begraben. Unmittelbar am Südost-Turm haben sich noch Reste der ehemaligen äußeren Ringmauer mit einer Höhe von 8,50 Metern erhalten. In den Jahren 2006–2011 wurde der Schuttkegel über der noch vorhandenen Mauer von den Mitgliedern des Arbeitskreises Osterburg abgetragen und die noch vorhandenen Mauerreste gesichert. Mit dieser Maßnahme wurde der Burg ein großer Teil ihres ursprünglichen Aussehens zurückgegeben.

Heutige Situation

Um den sichtbaren Verfall der Ruine entgegenzuwirken, schlossen sich im Jahre 1977 einige heimatkundlich Interessierte zum „Arbeitskreis Osterburg“ zusammen. Dieser bemüht sich bis heute um diese Anlage.

Burgruine Osterburg (Henfstädt)

Das ursprünglich als Wasserschloss errichtete Schloss wurde um 1100 erstmals urkundlich als Talburg erwähnt und im Mittelalter mehrfach zerstört. Die letzte Zerstörung erfolgte 1641. 1665 wurde das heutige Schloss mit den vier Türmen vom Eva Maria Magdalena Marschalk von Ostheim errichtet. 1814, nach dem Tod Freiherr Franz Friedrich Marschalks von Ostheim, wurde das Schloss an Christian Friedrich von Stockmar zu Coburg verkauft, welcher es restaurierte. 1882 gelangte das Schloss in den Besitz Hermann von Eichels, der 1892 auch Schloss Oberstadt erwarb, aber anschließend verarmte und Schloss Marisfeld 1936 an Ludwig Krämer aus Duisburg verkaufte. Zum Gedenken an seine verstorbene Frau gründete Krämer die Käthe-Krämer-Stiftung, unter welcher das Schloss als Kindererholungsheim der Nationalsozialistischen Volkswohlfahrt genutzt wurde. 1947 wurde das Kinderheim von der Volkssolidarität übernommen. 1951–1972 führte es der Rat des Kreises Suhl als Karl-Liebknecht-Kinderheim, anschließend wurde es an die Gemeindevertretung Marisfeld abgegeben. 1993 übernahm das Diakonische Werk das Heim und begann mit der Restaurierung. Bis 1997 wurde das gesamte Schloss rekonstruiert und dient seitdem wieder als Kinderheim.

Schloss Marisfeld

Das Schloss Landsberg in Meiningen ist ein ehemaliges Lustschloss der Herzöge von Sachsen-Meiningen und beherbergte bis Dezember 2013 ein romantisches First-Class-Hotel.

Das Schloss wurde auf den Ruinen der im Bauernkrieg zerstörten Burg Landeswehre in den Jahren 1836 bis 1840 erbaut und befindet sich am nördlichen Stadtrand der Kreisstadt Meiningen auf einem 378 Meter hohen Bergkegel, der zwischen dem Meininger Stadtteil Walldorf und Meiningen ins Werratal hineinragt. Das Schloss Landsberg ist seit 2016 im Besitz eines chinesischen Konsortiums, das es weiter als Hotel betreiben will.

Geschichte

Die Burg Landeswehre wurde erstmals 1129 urkundlich erwähnt. Sie diente dem Schutz der Handelsstraßen nach Würzburg (Hohe Straße) und Fulda (Frankfurter Straße), der Werratalstraße Richtung Salzungen, der Werrafurt bei Walldorf und dem Zugang nach Meiningen. Zu ihr gehörte auch ein Gutshof am Fuß des Bergs. Im Deutschen Bauernkrieg stürmten am 13. Mai 1525 werraaufwärts ziehende Bauernhaufen die Burg und zerstörten sie bis auf den Bergfried und Teile der Mauer. Sie war seitdem unbewohnbar. Der Turm, der sich 1685 bei einer Sprengung zur Gewinnung von Baumaterial zur Seite neigte, ist in Resten bis heute erhalten und in das Schlossensemble integriert.

Angeregt durch seine Besuche bei seiner Schwester Adelheid, der Königin von Großbritannien, erwarb Herzog Bernhard II. von Sachsen-Meiningen 1836 den Landsberg und die dazugehörigen Grundstücke mit dem Gutshof und ließ bis 1840 unter Leitung der Architekten August Wilhelm Döbner und Carl Alexander Heideloff ein neues Schloss im neugotischen Stil nach dem Vorbild englischer Adelssitze errichten. Adelheid ließ hierbei vom englischen Architekten Sir Jeffry Wyatville die Pläne entwerfen und übernahm zudem einen Teil der Kosten. Der seitdem eigenständige Gutshof wurde bis 1842 zu einer im Schweizerstil gehaltenen Meierei mit Scheunen, Ställen, Remise und Herrenhaus um- und ausgebaut.

Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg war das Schloss ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel. 1920 kam es in Privatbesitz des New Yorker Geschäftsmanns H. L. Erny und später im Besitz des Berliner Kaufmanns P. Weber. Das Schloss war so bis 1945 nicht mehr zugänglich. Nach kurzzeitigen Nutzungen als Seniorenheim und Bildungseinrichtung betrieb die HO seit den 1960er Jahren im Schloss eine Ausflugsgaststätte, die von 1975 bis 1978 schließlich zu einem Luxus-Hotel umgebaut wurde. Von 1991 bis 1996 befand sich das Schloss im Besitz von Friedrich-Ernst Prinz von Sachsen-Meiningen, der den Hotelbetrieb weiterführte. Im März 1997 übernahm die Meininger Hotels mit Flair GmbH Schloss und Hotel und führte 2003 umfangreiche Sanierungs- und Modernisierungsarbeiten durch. Anfang 2008 wurde das Schloss in die gemeinnützige Stiftung Meininger Baudenkmäler überführt.

Seit 2015 stand das Schloss beim Auktionshaus Christie’s zum Verkauf und wurde im Juli 2016 an ein chinesisches Konsortium namens New Silk Road Company Ltd. verkauft. Im Herbst 2017 sollte zunächst das Restaurant und Mitte 2018 das gesamte Schloss nach einer Modernisierung als luxuriöses Vier-Sterne-Hotel wiedereröffnet werden. Eine Restauranteröffnung hat bisher jedoch nicht stattgefunden. Im Jahr 2019 wurde auch keine der angekündigten umfangreichen Maßnahmen der neuen chinesischen Eigentürmer aus Dubai durchgeführt. Anfang Januar 2020 kam es zu einem schweren Wasserschaden der auch die Bausubstanz des Schlosses gefährdete. Für die Sicherungs- und Reparaturkosten musste der Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen aufkommen. Fabian Gießder der Bürgermeister der Stadt Meiningen strebt seit Anfang 2020 die Überführung des Schlosses in die von Thüringen und Sachsen-Anhalt geplante Mitteldeutsche Schlösserstiftung an. Die Überführung des Schlosses gestaltet sich jedoch als schwer, da bei der geplanten Stiftung Uneinigkeit zwischen den Ländern herrscht wie diese konkret verwirklicht werden soll. Mittlerweile befindet sich ein von den Eigentümern eingesetzter Hausverwalter im Schloss Landsberg, welcher sich um die Angelegenheiten vor Ort kümmern soll.

Schloss Landsberg (Meiningen)

The Johanniterburg Kühndorf , later also referred to as Kühndorf Castle , was built in 1315 by the Order of St. John on the remains of a previous castle as a fort made of wide residential towers and expanded to the last residence by the Counts of Henneberg . Since 1991 the castle has been renovated from private funds and can be visited. The Johanniterburg Kühndorf is the only private property on the Thuringia Castle Road .

History

Colonization

The Johanniterburg stands on old settlement land. Already in the Celtic times there was a settlement with a fortification on the Dolmar. After the Celts emigrated, the region was colonized by Germanic people. Up to the Thuringian Forest through the Thuringians, in the Werra Valley but through Franconia. With the colonization of the Franks, ordered villages were created and the first documents appear. Kühndorf is one of the first places in the region to be mentioned in a document: Chunitorpfe appeared as early as 795 in a deed of donation to the Fulda Abbey. Politically, Kühndorf has belonged to the Franconian District, which had its center in Würzburg, since the late Middle Ages.


Lords of Kühndorf

In 1137 a certificate was issued in the Kaiserpfalz in neighboring Rohr , on which the seal of Gottfried von Kühndorf hangs. The first time someone called himself by his last name after this place and one can assume that it is a noble who sat as a knight on a horse during the war and had a knight's seat in Kühndorf.

Predecessor castle

A castle, now owned by the Counts of Henneberg, is mentioned for the first time in 1274. Remains of this stone building can still be seen in today's Castle: The stump of the keep with humpback blocks from the first half of the 13th century and in the walls built spoils . This castle was torn down in 1315 and replaced by a new building for the Order of St. John.

Castle of the Order of St. John

Under Berthold VII, called Berthold the Wise , the county of Henneberg experienced a heyday. Berthold VII was one of the most important domestic political advisors to three German kings and emperors and was temporarily appointed as guardian of the Bohemian king and raised to the rank of imperial prince during this time. Berthold VI., The older brother of Berthold the Wise, was intended for the clergy and entered the Order of St. John in 1291 and held high offices there. In 1315 Berthold the Wise sold to his brother Berthold VI. and the Order of St. John the mountain Dolmar, surrounding villages and explicitly the Kühndorf Castle with the permission to build a new castle there. That the Order of St. John built a castle in the middle of the Henneberger Land is completely unusual, because the order had no military function in Central Europe. Only three other castles of the order are known in the German-speaking area, with Kühndorf remaining as the only one in Germany. As is typical of the order, the Johanniter Castle was laid out as a fort consisting of two wide residential towers. A coat of arms stone from the time of the building shows the division into secular and monastic areas.

Expansion by the Counts of Henneberg-Römhild

After Berthold VI. and his nephew Berthold VIII., who also lived at the Johanniter Castle Kühndorf as the Grand Prior of the German Tongue, died, the order lost interest in the Johanniter Castle. The castle is for sale and will eventually be shared among the various interested parties. In 1444 Georg I von Henneberg-Römhild finally bought all the shares and modernized the castle for a defense with firearms by placing a kennel with five towers around the castle.

Residence of the Counts of Henneberg-Schleusingen

The Römhilder line died out with Hermann VIII in 1549 and the Johanniterburg Kühndorf became the property of the Henneberg-Schleusingen line. Under Wilhelm IV von Henneberg-Schleusingen, a district court was set up for the surrounding villages in Kühndorf. His son Georg Ernst even moved his residence to the Johanniterburg Kühndorf for a short time in 1569. In 1583 the family died out with Georg Ernst von Henneberg-Schleusingen.

Inheritance from the dukes of Saxony

In 1583 the Dukes of Saxony inherited the Henneberger Land, who in Kühndorf only had the administrative and court seat of the Kühndorf office , so that the Johanniter Castle fell into a deep slumber. In addition to small modifications in the Torburg , the Johanniter Castle was preserved in the late Gothic style. At the Congress of Vienna in 1815 the Kühndorf office was ceded to Prussia and from then on belonged to the Province of Saxony .

Owner of the castle from 1900 to 1945

In 1902 Prussia sold the lower castle to Michael Keßler, a farmer from Kühndorf, who divided the castle among his six daughters and gave the upper castle to Rittmeister Simon. In 1920 the upper castle was sold to Dr. Treupel, a doctor from Jena, who set up a weapons room, a restaurant and a hostel here. In 1945 the upper castle was expropriated and became public property under the legal ownership of the municipality. In the post-war years, refugees and resettlers were quartered and school meals were set up.


Todays use

In 1991 Johann-Friedrich and Gudula von Eichborn , who also renovated Friesenhausen Castle in Lower Franconia, bought the upper castle from the community and the lower castle from private hands. Extensive renovation and maintenance work followed. The historical substance was exposed again and the castle was opened for sightseeing. In 2006 Konstantin and Sophie von Eichborn moved to Kühndorf and took over the management of the castle from their parents until 2013.  Today the Johanniterburg is mainly used for family celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and family get-togethers or holiday stays. There are also guided tours and the so-called castle revitalization with actors in historical costumes and with old equipment.

The Johanniter Castle was the location for the fairy tale film “ Little Brother and Sister (2008) ” and the horror film “ Sin Reaper 3D ” (2012).
