Above the village of Hukvaldy, rises a castle of the same name, which provided the composer with inspiration for many of his works. Janáček allegedly liked to sit on one of the castle’s lookout points. The romantic ruins of the medieval castle are the ideal place to look out over the countryside for you too. In the forest below the castle, you may come across the Cunning Little Vixen, or certainly at the very least across a monument to her. You can also concentrate on listening to Janáček’s music in the summer during the annual music festival, which takes place right in the castle and the adjacent game preserve.

The Šostýn Castle (originally titled Schornstein) was founded in the late 13th century (built circa 1290) by Count Henry of Hückeswagen. It is possible to see following from the former castle: uncovered bergfried´s fou­ndations, basement rooms of the palace (partially reconstructed), remains of entrance buildings and other buildings, scattered masonry and grading in the rocks and in the ground. Most massive remains of fortifications are preserved trenches and ramparts and restored castle pond. While castles Hukvaldy and Starý Jičín stand on lonely hills, the Šostýn castle is located in a relatively disadvantageous position, beneath the Pískovna hill. It could be the reason for its conquest and destruction. Well has never been at the castle and the inhabitants apparently took water from the tanker. According to custom, the water chutes led from the wooden drip flaps to the tanker, because the amount of water has always been on castles rather less than more .. The most attractive finding of the castle is considered to be the Šostýnská Venus. The statue, probably part of the decorative casket, measures 53 mm and is made of ivory. Though her face reminds mysterious Egyptian influences, it was probably a product of the 13th century, imported from the Rhineland, from where the first colonists came to this area. But how it got to the local castle, is still unknown. At the highest point of the ruins of the Šostýn castle there is the Žižka´s Linden tree, which was given its name by the Club of Czechoslovak Tourists in 1933. It was named after the alleged last holder of the Šostýn castle, who belonged to the Moravian Hussite nobility. The linden´s age is about 200 – 250 years.

Šostýn Castle

The chateau's present day Late Baroque appearance dates back to around 1780. It was built in the 1720s on the site of a medieval fortress, most probably by Josef Viktorin of Harasova. It is a single-storey building covered by a mansard roof.

Trnávka Chateau

After the abolition of the order in 1312, the castle came under the administration of the Czech King John of Luxembourg and, between 1333 and 1346, it was owned by the Moravian margrave Charles IV Wenceslas of Luxembourg, later the Roman Emperor and the King of Bohemia. From 1350 (since 1359 called castrum  Strallenberg), it was 25 later owned by the Moravian margrave John-Henry of Luxembourg, the founder of the town; then in 1375 it was taken over by his son, Jost of Luxembourg (1352-1411, the margrave of Moravia and Brandebourg). After 1380, the most important owners of the castle were members of the Moravian-Silesian branch of the family Benešovic, the lords of Kravaře (until 1433). After 1533 the castle started to deteriorate. Its oldest illustration (from 1722) shows a two-palace structure with farm buildings and two prismatic ramparts. In 1783, the outer part of the castle collapsed and the masonry was used for building purposes. The original height of the N-E fortification in the inner part of the castle remained unchanged. Between 1901 and 1903, its cylindrical tower called „bergfrit“ (height 40m, 10m in diameter) was covered with a roof and changed into a lookout designed by the famous Prague architect Kamil Hilbert. The outer ramparts were partly repaired and completed with two gates. A plaque designed by the sculptor František Juráň, was fitted into the fortification in memory of Adolf Hrstka M. D. (1864-1931, physician and former mayor of Štramberk and its indefatigable promoter). The gothic tower of the castle together with adjoining parts of the fortification (NKP) generally known as Trúba (local expression for round timber) dominantes the town. In 1994, it became its property.

Štramberk Castle

Defensive border Gothic castle, which was rebuilt into a chateau (of Bartoloměj Bruntálský of Vrbna) in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. Following a fire in 1668, it was reconstructed several times. It belonged to the Habsburg estate from 1797, and now the state.

Frýdek Chateau

Four-winged, storeyed chateau built by Václav of Vrbna, evidently on the site of a former fortress. It is seperated from the village by a castle front area with a high entrance tower in the middle with a clock. It is surrounded by a park with valuable statues.

Paskov Chateau

Originally a fortress, first records date back to 1374. The German family Vetter von der Lilie owned it until the 17th century. It was reconstructed into a Baroque chateau in the 18th century.

Nová Horka Chateau

15th century fortress, which was reconstructed into a Renaissance chateau by the Sedlničtí of Choltic in 1583. In 1616, another three-storey chateau was added in the near vicinity. Both building structures were interconnected by a joining wing.

Bartošovice Chateau

One-storey chateau building established by reconstructing an older chateau, mentioned in historical writings already in 1705. Around 1860, the tower was added with a turret and spiral staircase.

Studénka Chateau

Newly reconstructed Baroque chateau. Its history begins with the Harrach clan in 1726-1734. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries Kunín became a modern education institution, attended by a famous native of nearby Hodslavice - František Palacký.

Kunín Chateau

Renaissance chateau from the 17th century, its frontispiece was renovated in Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century.
