The chateau stands on the site where the original fort likely stood; referred to as a chateau after 1591, the building was burned by Imperial forces in 1623. The German general staff was situated at the chateau in the spring of 1945 and the chateau park was used as an airfield. In May Soviet troops took over the chateau and it subsequently served as a summer residence for the Ministery of Foreign Affairs. Since 1952 the chateau has served as a Prague retirement home.
