This castle was among the most important residences of the powerful lords of Pernštejn. It was built on an elongated rocky ridge on the right bank of the Svratka River, not far from the town of Pivonice, so that it could help protect the trade route that lead from Brno to Polička. The Pernštejn family crest features a bison ("zubr," in Czech), and so the former Kámen (Stone) Castle was renamed Zubrštejn, which is the origin of the garbled current name, Zubštejn. The last evidence of residents inhabiting this expansive castle dates back to 1522. Surviving structures include the remainder of the the northern entrance tower and a large portion of the castle palace. In 2009–2011, the ruins were outfitted with structural supports, a wooden bridge between the bridgehead and the castle core was constructed for the safety of tourists, and siege engines were added.
