The Gothic castle was founded to defend the passage between Bohemia and Lusatia in the middle of the 13th century. In the 16th century it was reconstructed to a Renaissance form. Following the fire of 1843, the castle was uninhabited, it served as a summerhouse of Clam-Gallas family for a time.

The original Gothic castle of Grafenstein was founded in the 13th century. In 1562, it was bought by Crown Chancellor Georg Mehl von Strelitz. Between 1566 and 1586, he had rebuilt the castle in Renaissance style and thus turned it into a representative chateau.
Georg Mehl also had a steward's house built below the castle, which was around the year 1830 rebuilt in Classicist style. Shortly before that – around 1818 – Christian of Clam-Gallas had built the New Castle near the Old Castle. The new building was surrounded by a large garden with a number of valuable plants. The Old Castle has preserved its original Renaissance appearance despite a fire which damaged its upper floors in 1843.
The House of Clam-Gallas owned Grabštejn since 1704 until it was confiscated in 1945. After the Second World War, the castle was open to the public, but in 1953, the whole castle complex was taken over by the Ministry of Defence. The Old Castle's condition significantly deteriorated after the army left in the late 1980s.
Repairs and restorations began in 1989. Nowadays, Grabštejn is one of the best restored monuments of great importance in the Czech Republic. The castle was opened to the public again in 1993. The tower offers a marvellous view of the three-border-triangle, the castle's northern wing, and the vault. The most touristically attractive part of the castle interior is the St. Barbara chapel decorated with Renaissance fresco paintings from the 16th century. All parts of the ceiling and walls are ornamented in with interlaced figural, animal, and heraldic motifs.

Grabštejn Castle

Lemberk was originally a frontier guard castle on the Zittau trade route. Only the cylindrical tower remains of the original structure, other parts were covered by Renaissance and Baroque reconstructions.
Lemberk chateau was created by the reconstruction of a medieval castle where St. Zdislava of Lemberk used to live. Inside the chateau, the Chapel, the Great Hall with its precious coffer ceiling and painted scenes from Aesop’s fables, the Suzerain Office with a safe from the beginning of the 19th century, and the Black Kitchen, get the most attention. Since 2010, the tour has been enriched by the Armoury and so-called Liebig Rooms, which resemble accommodation for a significant textile industrial family at the nowadays inaccessible Nový Falkenburk chateau at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Occasionally, the Clam-Gallas Apartment, where visitors can see the progress of the restoration works and also the progress of furnishing the rooms with historical furniture, is opened. A Baroque garden and the so-called Zdislava Well are situated near the chateau.

Lemberk Chateau

Renaissance chateau established by the Berka of Dubé in 1565. In 1759 radical changes were made and the chateau became a late Baroque edifice with a modified English park. After 1870 the situation was reversed – interest in the chateau was pretty much lost and it became a granary. In 1901, it was restored in the neo-Baroque style and after the war it became a children’s home.

Nový Falkenburg Chateau

The castle was founded in the 1st half of the 14th century by the family of Berka from Dubá in order to provide protection for the merchant route to Žitava. It was built on sandstone blocks and has never been conquered.
For the whole time of its existence the castle was in the possession of the Berka family, who left it by the end of the 16th century. The cause of its destruction was the mine where millstone used to be exploited (in the 18th century). The fort is over 100 metres long but it was strongly affected by the mining activities. At present, the only preserved part is the wall with a gate. The nearby rock gate is not natural but man-made.

Milštejn Castle

The original gothic stronghold was between 16th and 17th century enlarged into a renaissance castle owned by important noble houses of Bibrstein, Redern, Clam-Gallas, and during the Thirty-Years War also by Albrecht from Wallenstein, who raised the region to a principate. The castle is one of the first European monuments to be open to public - it was opened in 1801.

Frýdlant Chateau

The castle was built in 1278 as part of the Zittau region's defense structure. George of Poděbrady ordered the castle to be seized shortly after the Hussite Wars and after many conflicts, the Tolštejn dominion was taken by 1471 by two Saxon princes, Ernest and Albrecht. During the Thirty Years War, the army of the Austrian Emperor occupied the castle. In 1607, the Swedish General Wrangel laid siege and burned down the castle.
Today the ruins of the castle are one of the most visited places in the Czech Republic. The creation of the microregion of Tolštejn was designed to help tourism in the area.

Tolštejn Castle

The rock castle named Stohánek was built on a steep sandstone mound near the village of Svébořice, not far from Hamr na Jezeře.
It was first mentioned in historic sources in 1431 but its history was not very long: the last mention comes from the year 1453 and shortly afterwards the castle probably ceased to exist. In 1760 a hermitage was established on the remnants.

Stohánek Castle

The deserted castle was used by thieving knights and later destroyed by treasure hunters. At present, its ruins form the characteristic silhouette of the lonely hill. The castle was not open to the public for a long time as it was located in a military area. At present, you can set out for a challenging trip; the climbing itself is worthwhile. Besides the relics of the castle, the top offers a superb view of the České Středohoří, the Lužické Hory and Jizerské Hory, Ještěd, dominant features of Český ráj and the Mácha region with Bezděz Hill.
Ralsko Castle is connected with several legends. One of them mentions a hidden treasure guarded by a giant dog that rambles through the dense forests. Another legend insists that inside the hill, similarly to Blaník Hill, sleeping soldiers are waiting, to save the country when it gets into really serious problems.

Ralsko Castle

Nová louka is a place where glassworks were operated from 1756 to 1817. Later, the building was purchased by Riedel, a well-known glass maker from the Jizera Mountains, and in 1844 Count Clam-Gallas had it converted into a hunting chateau. The ground building is covered by a garret roof with a turret. It is valuable proof of the history of glass-making in North Bohemia and a lovely sight on the mountain meadow. Subsequently, the building became a chalet for government officers and was named after the chancellor Šámal. This is where the name of Šámalova louka, which is sometimes heard even nowadays, comes from.

Nová Louka Chateau

The castle named Svojkov was obviously founded at the beginning of the 14th century.
The castle was built on the 20-metre-high conical hill in the valley under the rock massif of Svojkov. During the construction work, the rock base was used and some parts of the castle were carved directly in the rock. The sandstone needed for the development of the castle was brought from the nearby surroundings. Because of the height of the rock it was possible to build a three-storey construction, with staircases built from outside.
From 1381 the castle was in the possession of the noble family from Chlum. The best-known member of the family was Jan from Chlum, nicknamed Kepka, who - along with Václav from Dubá - accompanied John Huss to the council in Konstanz. He supported Huss' and his teaching and was his loyal friend. During the 16th century the castle dilapidated and in 1590 the wooden part of the castle was pulled down and burnt. In 1650 new owners began to build a small Baroque chateau at the foot of the hill. In the 2nd half of the 19th century the ruin was fixed and completed with new romantic elements.
