Fosteau Castle (French: Château du Fosteau) is a castle in Leers-et-Fosteau in the municipality of Thuin, province of Hainaut, in Belgium.

History

The first castle at Fosteau was erected in the 14th century. In approximately 1380 Wauthier de Semousies became owner when Duchess Joan of Brabant gave it to him. His successors were the lords of Zwenne, de Marotte, de Henry and de Jamblines. They built several other buildings around the castle. The hall is Gothic.

The castle became a protected monument in 1979. Since 1980, it has housed an exhibition of antique furniture. Everything within the castle is also available for sale.

In de elfde eeuw behoorde het kasteel toe aan de familie van Florennes, daarna de familie Morialme, vervolgens aan Gwijde van Dampierre, het Huis Condé (1259), de heren van Edingen (1402), het Huis Luxemburg, de familie van Fosseux en de hertogen van Bourgondië .

In 1473 tot 1941 was het kasteel eigendom van het Huis Merode. Vervolgens kwam het door vererving aan het Huis Oultremont. Het werd in 1952 verkocht aan de gemeente van Ham-sur-Heure en is nu het gemeentehuis van Ham-sur-Heure-Nalinnes.

Thy-le-Château Castle, locally known as Château de Thy-le-Château, lies in the village of the same name, in the province of Namur in the Wallonia region in Belgium.

Thy-le-Château Castle was first mentioned at the end of the 12th century. Then it was owned by Henry IV, 'the Blind', Count of Namur. However, legend has it that the castle was built by Jean, a local lord, who had partaken in the taking of the city of Tyre during the Crusades in 1124 and who built Thy-le-Château Castle according to the plan of Tyre after his return.

In 1188 Thy-le-Château Castle was sieged by the armed troops of Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut, and taken by force. In 1190, Baldwin presented the castle to his brother William, called 'Saint-Sauve'.

In later centuries the castle passed through the hands of several families; de Neuville, de Werchin, de Barbençon-Jeumont, de Melun, de Ligne and de Croÿ.

In 1790 Thy-le-Château Castle stood empty and was burned by revolutionaries and fell to ruin. In 1830 the ruins were bought by the Hanseval family and used as barns. From then on several buildings were built against and within the ruins. In 1870 the main building was used as a brewery.

In 1910 the castle was bought by Louis Piret, a local ironmaster. In 1920 he started to restore the castle back to its medieval appearance. The newer buildings were torn down and archaeological excavations were carried out, the findings being used as a guideline to give the castle its medieval appearance. The restoration was completed in 1939.

On May 14, 1940 however the German air force bombed a French military convoy that had halted near the castle. The castle was destroyed in the process. So, after World War II ended, Louis Piret again started to rebuilt Thy-le-Château Castle. It is the result of that restoration that we see today.

At present Thy-le-Château Castle is private property and is used for cultural activities.

Thy-le-Château Castle

Le château de Fontaine-l'Évêque également connu sous le nom de château Bivort se situe à Fontaine-l'Évêque, ville belge, dans la province de Hainaut.

Histoire
La seigneurie de Fontaine, située à la frontière du Hainaut et de Liège, relève de la famille Hennin-Liétard jusqu'en 1596. Reconstruit en grande partie après 1554, le château conserve néanmoins son enceinte du xiiie siècle et la chapelle gothique.

Le château passe ensuite par plusieurs maisons. Vers 1674, Michel-Luc Camille de Rodoan construit le portail et la façade actuelle de la chapelle. L'aile résidentielle des xvie et xviie siècles est prolongée dans la première moitié du xviiie siècle. Le domaine est ruiné à la fin du xviiie siècle.

Il est racheté en 1864 par Clément Bivort de la Saudée qui complète l'aile d'habitation, puis par la commune de Fontaine-l'Évêque en 1946.

En 1869, l'architecte Auguste Cador entreprend une restauration, mêlée d'esprit néo-médiéval, épurée lors des travaux menés en 1954 par Simon Brigode.

History

Origins of the château can be traced back to the 17th century, around 1635, when the Honoré family builds a castle on the Sambre river bank. The place had formerly been occupied by a seigneurial manor which was destroyed on 21 July 1554.

In 1667, the unfinished Spanish fortress of Charleroy is captured by Louis XIV's troops during the War of Devolution. As the castle in Marchienne was located in neutral territory (under authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège), it was used as a hospital for both French and Spanish soldiers.

In 1695, the castle is bought by Guillaume de Bilquin, a wealthy forge owner, who completes and enhances it. In 1717, his daughter, Marie-Agnès Bilquin, marries Jean-Louis Cartier, son of the general treasurer of the prince-bishop of Liège. As such, the castle becomes the property of the Cartier de Marchienne family.

In 1740, the castle hosts Remacle Le Loup, a famous draftsman from the Liège region. It is severely damaged by a fire in 1932, and bought over by the municipality of Marchienne-au-Pont in 1938, ending more than two centuries of ownership by the Cartier family.

Marguerite Yourcenar, a Belgian-born French novelist and essayist, and the first woman elected to the Académie française, is the daughter of Fernande de Cartier de Marchienne, from the Cartier family related to the Cartier castle. She visited the castle in Marchienne-au-Pont in 1956, and mentions her Cartier de Marchienne ancestry and the castle in her 1974 memoir Dear Departed: A Memoir (French: Souvenirs pieux).

The Cartier castle was listed on 21 August 1980. It underwent restoration in phases between 1986 and 2001 (helped by ERDF), after having been left in a sorry condition (infested by dry rot).

The castle today hosts a public library on the ground floor (Bibliothèque Marguerite Yourcenar), and administrative services of the Walloon region on the first floor. The library has a section dedicated to books in Turkish language.

The courtyard is equipped with benches and is publicly accessible as part of the Marchienne-au-Pont municipal park. The castle wing which was located on the southern side of the courtyard has been demolished to create an entrance for the De Cartier station of the Charleroi metro. At the tip of the western wing, a stone porch is adorned with the arms of the Bilquin-Baillencourt family, and a 1699 date inscription. Similarly, the lintel above the northern wing door shows a scalloped key with the arms of the Cartier family. Other demolished features include a barnyard where the Marchienne-au-Pont municipal swimming pool now stands.

A 19th century grain elevator in neo-renaissance style can be seen on the Sambre embankment.

Cartier Castle

Castle of Tarcienne is a castle on a slight hilltop in the western portion of the Walloon village of Tarcienne, in the municipality of Walcourt, Namur Province, Belgium.

It was initially constructed (1674) for Charles-Ignace de Colins. Its style was Louis XIV.

At present the castle is occupied by Eric Rosens, who is working to restore it to its previous state. It is not presently open to the public.

Trazegnies Castle is a castle located in Trazegnies, Courcelles in the Belgian province of Hainaut.

History
Trazegnies was originally a powerful independent seigneurie on the edges of the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Hainaut and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and was ruled by a separate dynasty. The original castle was built by Gilles I in the 11th Century but was almost completely destroyed in 1554 by the armies of Henry II of France during the Italian War of 1551–1559. Subsequently rebuilt, a corps de logis was added to the castle by Gillion-Othon de Trazegnies in the Louis XIII style in the 17th Century.

The extinction of the Trazegnies dynasty led to the sale of the castle to a coal mine which partitioned off its land, leaving the castle itself to the Belgian state. It had become derelict by 1926 and suffered severe damage from subsidence as a result of underground mining. However, a civic association called the "Friends of Trazegnies Castle" (Les Amis du Château de Trazegnies) successfully opposed its destruction and began a gradual programme of restoration with the support of the Walloon Region. The castle is currently open to the public on designated days.

Acoz (en wallon Åcoz) est un village de la province de Hainaut, situé immédiatement au nord de Gerpinnes, en Région wallonne de Belgique. Sis au confluent du ruisseau homonyme (Acoz) et de l'Hanzinne qui se jette dans la Sambre à Châtelet, le village était une commune à part entière avant la fusion des communes de 1977.

Le château

Le château est un édifice en pierre calcaire situé au milieu d’un parc dans la vallée de la Hanzinne qui alimente les douves. Du vaste quadrilatère fortifié remontant à la fin du xvie ou au début du xviie siècle ne subsistent qu’une tour isolée du nord-ouest et deux ailes à l’est et au sud, fortement transformées aux xviiie et xixe siècles.

L'église Saint-Martin

Édifiée en 1844 l’église porte sur le fronton de la porte principale le chronogramme : «Christo Virginique Martinoque condita fuit ut subjectis faveant nobis». Ce qui signifie: elle fut édifiée en l'honneur du Christ, de la Vierge et de Martin afin qu'ils nous soient favorables, à nous qui leur sommes soumis.

La Tour octavienne

La tour carrée ou ermitage vertical fut bâtie en 1875 par l'écrivain Octave Pirmez. C'est là qu'il écrivit Les feuillées et Heures de solitude. Plutôt romantique et sans style bien précis, elle a des aspects de donjon fortifié du xiie siècle allié à un pigeonnier du xviiie siècle. En ruines présentant un danger pour la sécurité des usagers, elle a dû être démolie.

La marche Saint-Roch et Saint-Frégo
Il s'agit de l'une des marches de l'Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse et a lieu le dimanche suivant le 15 août.

Cette marche fait partie des quinze marches de l'Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse qui ont été reconnues en décembre 2012 comme chef-d'œuvre du patrimoine oral et immatériel de l'humanité par l'UNESCO.

L'origine de la marche remonte au siècle dernier. En 1866, une épidémie de choléra répandit la terreur dans la région et la famille Scieur, très éprouvée, avait érigé une petite chapelle dédiée à saint Roch, patron des pestiférés. Quelques années plus tard, vers 1870, on décida de rendre hommage à saint Roch et on lui associa saint Frégo, qui lui jouissait d'une grande vénération, étant le protecteur des petits enfants contre la « maladie du carreau » — actuellement, on peut découvrir dans le fond de l'église paroissiale d'Acoz-Centre la statue du saint ornée de quelques paires de petits souliers déposées là par des parents reconnaissants. La marche était née et une tradition allait s'instaurer.

Chaque année, le rendez-vous est donné à tous ceux qui veulent perpétuer cette procession. Le dimanche à 11 heures, la procession quitte l'église d'Acoz escortée par deux compagnies. Lausprelle, habillée exclusivement en costumes du Premier Empire, ouvre le cortège. Elle est suivie de la compagnie d'Acoz qui elle est revêtue de costumes du Second Empire, à l'exception du peloton des jeunes qui préfère l'habit de grenadier du Premier Empire. La compagnie d'Acoz est accompagnée par la fanfare du village. La procession fait son entrée dans le hameau de Lausprelle vers 13 heures. À 15 heures, elle repart pour assister aux vêpres chantés en l'église Saint-Léon. Après cet office, Lausprelle rejoint le quartier de la gare d'Acoz pour la rentrée solennelle. Vers 18 heures, les deux compagnies entrent dans la cour intérieure du château Pirmez pour y tirer des salves. C'est ensuite le retour en l'église d'Acoz où est célébré un salut. Le lundi à 9 h 30, une messe militaire est célébrée tant au centre qu'à Lausprelle. Ces cérémonies sont suivies de salves d'honneur et d'évolutions dans les quartiers jusqu'au soir. Le cassage du verre de la compagnie d'Acoz a lieu le dernier samedi de juin à 19 heures et celui de la compagnie de Lausprelle le lundi de saint Roch et saint Frégo vers 22 heures.

Havré Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Havré in the town of Mons, province of Hainaut, Belgium.

History
The origins of the castle can be only traced back to the year 1226, even the counts of Flanders and Hainaut have had control over Havré since the 11th century. In 1255 Ida of Mons was married to Engelbert d'Enghien. Their descendants keep Havré Castle to the year 1423. Then Gérard d'Enghien passes the Castle on to Christophe d'Harcourt. Through marriage, the castle came into the possession of the families Dunan, Longeville and Croy.

In 1518 Philip II de Croÿ commander of Emperor Charles V, became the owner of the castle. By 1537 he was in charge of County of Hainault as grand baliff and governor. Phillipe married on 9 August 1548 Anna of Lorraine (* July 25, 1522, † May 15, 1568) as his second wife, a daughter of the Duke Anton II of Lorraine. He died before the birth of his son Charles-Philippe ( 1 September 1549 - Brussels † 25 November 1613 - in Burgundy ). Wounded by a musket Charles-Philippe was treated by Ambroise Paré at Castle Havré, who was the first surgeon to French King Charles IX and a prominent surgeon of his time.

In 1578, the castle underwent its roughest period with siege by the armies of Don Juan de Austria and the Duke of Anjou. The castle was kept without much damage. Unfortunately, in 1579 a fire was fierce and devastating burning the castle to the walls.

During the seventeenth century it is Charles Alexander, Duke of Croy, who would restore the castle and make it one of the most magnificent castles of pleasure in Belgium, where many royals and famous artists of the time liked to stay.

Shortly after the French invasion of 1792, it was quickly sold as national property. Despite its acquisition in 1807 by the family of Croy, the castle was gradually abandoned.

Finally at the beginning of the twentieth century what was left, the castle due to negligence from 1930 transformed into ruins.
