At the confluence of the Obra and Paklicy is an artificial hill on which stand the ruins of the royal castle. Already at the end of the ninth century was a wooden castle here, which often destroyed Brandenburgians. In 1296 years it partially destroyed in fire, after which the bulkheads stationed just military. 
Brick castle built by Casimir the Great, but the exact dates of the construction of do not know. Perhaps it started before the year 1340, and archaeological studies indicate that after 1350 years still could not be completed. Castle quite exactly fit the shape of the foundation of castle. Perimeter walls, with the exception of the northern sector, stand on the old ramparts of earth, and the whole thing has an irregular plan. The entrance to the castle ran from the east side, next was a tower. Later moved to the center of the eastern entrance section of the wall, and on the former site of the tower was erected more extended slightly to the outside. Residential buildings found in the western and southern part of the courtyard. 
In 1474 years the castle was captured by the Silesian looters. Even in the fifteenth century, it was rebuilt. When in 1520 the German army went to help the Teutonic Knights captured and burned międzyrzecki castle. During the reconstruction after the devastation has given it features Renaissance. Do not forget the fortifications that lived to see a thorough overhaul in 1564. Then added two corner cylindrical Basta. 
Very well preserved southern bastion built of brick. Its inner diameter is about 10-11 meters and the thickness of the walls is 3.5 meters. Utilized tier 9 meter bastion is located 3 meters above ground level. At this height, there are two types of shooting - for light firearms and currently serving as a window large shooting to heavy weapons. It is not known how the original looked like the culmination of this object. In Germany met then Basta covered roof, ruled, however, that there could be heaped dome from the ground with seating for shooters in the chest. 
The castle was the seat of governors, of whom we know and Stanislaw J. Zamoyski Zolkiewski. During the Thirty Years' War in the seventeenth century, was destroyed, and the long nobody cared about him. 
In the years 1954-1958 was carried out by Z. Ziętkiewicz thorough archaeological and architectural research. Today it houses the regional museum.

Zamek w Świebodzinie został zbudowany u schyłku XIII lub na początku XIV stulecia przez nieznanego fundatora, którym prawdopodobnie był jeden z książąt śląskich. Z roku 1329 pochodzi pierwsza wzmianka o warowni wymieniająca civitas ad castrum Swibzin jako własność księcia żagańskiego Henryka IV. W XIV wieku, gdy księstwo żagańskie należało do władców Głogowa, na zamku zamieszkiwały wdowy książęce, służył on także jako centrum administracyjne dla obszaru wschodniej Brandenburgii z jej majątkami ziemskimi i prawami. W XV stuleciu na krótko przeszedł w zastaw zakonu joannitów z Łagowa i przypuszczalnie w tym czasie został nieznacznie rozbudowany.

Na przełomie XV i XVI stulecia na zamku zasiedli komendanci i starości okręgu, wśród których do najbardziej zasłużonych dla miasta należeli przedstawiciele rodziny von Knobelsdorff, kolejno: Sebastian, Johan Georg, Caspar Sigismund i Maksymilian, inicjator przebudowy gotyckiego dotąd obiektu na renesansową rezydencję. Starostowie uważani byli za namiestników królewskich, zaś ich prerogatywy równoważne były do kasztelańskich. Przez pewien czas posiadali oni władzę zwierzchnią nie tylko nad świebodzińskim magistratem, ale też nad ławą sądowniczą i cechami rzemieślników. Po zniszczeniach wojny trzydziestoletniej Caspar Sigismund Knobelsdorff przebudował warownię, którą w roku 1699 przejęły w ramach zastawu cysterki z podwrocławskiej Trzebnicy. Od tego wydarzenia zamek zaczął stopniowo tracić swój obronny charakter stając się centrum administracyjnym latyfundiów cysterskich.

Kolejne zmiany własnościowe warowni, również jej funkcji i formy, nastąpiły w wieku XIX. Najpierw najstarsza, gotycka część zamku przeszła w ręce Gustawa Kramma, właściciela firmy budującej linię kolejową z Marchii do Wielkopolski. Następnie, w 1868 roku, miasto kupiło od niego obiekt, by w roku 1896 przekazać go siostrom boromeuszkom, które urządziły w nim szpital, szkołę katolicką oraz przedszkole. Dla potrzeb nowych oddziałów w latach 30. XX wieku dostawiono nowe skrzydła szpitalne i połączono je łącznikiem ze starymi murami, nieodwracalnie zacierając tym samym historyczny układ założenia. Po zakończeniu 2. wojny światowej w dawnym zamku przez krótki okres funcjonował Caritas, a od 1946 swoją siedzibę miał tutaj ośrodek sanatoryjny. W tym czasie część zespołu obejmująca mieszkania personelu oraz kaplicę została opuszczona i popadła w ruinę. Rozpoczęte w 1984 roku prace remontowe przerwano wraz z upadkiem starego systemu w roku 1989. 

Nie rozpoczęto nigdy badań, które pozwoliłyby bardziej szczegółowo określić wygląd i rozplanowanie zamku w Świebodzinie. Przypuszcza się, że pierwotnie składał się on z jednego lub dwóch skrzydeł mieszkalnych i cylindrycznej wieży w części pd.wsch. założenia. Od miasta warownia odgrodzona była nawodnionym przekopem połączonym z okalającą mur miejski fosą, a wjazd do niej wiódł od strony północnej przez bramę ze zwodzonym mostem i ufortyfikowane przedzamcze. Zapewne w XVI wieku zamek rozbudowano o kolejne skrzydło mieszkalne, które wraz z istniejącymi utworzyło kształt podkowy, co doskonale widoczne jest na zachowanych panoramach: XVII-wiecznej autorstwa G. Brauna i młodszej o około 150 lat rycinie wykonanej przez F. Wernhera. Zachowane do dziś w dobrym stanie zdobienia elewacji w formie krzyżów loterańskich ułożonych z wmurowanych w ściany kul armatnich pochodzą prawdopodobnie właśnie z tego okresu. Dawniej zamek posiadał dwutraktowy układ wnętrz, który został zatarty podczas ostatniej przebudowy, prowadzonej w latach 30. XX stulecia. 

Zamek przetrwał do czasów nam współczesnych, choć jego forma uległa na przestrzeni wieków poważnym modyfikacjom. Relikty średniowiecznego założenia znajdują się w południowo-wschodnim skrzydle zabudowań, wkomponowanych w bezstylową współczesną architekturę gmachu Lubuskiego Ośrodka Rehabilitacyjno-Ortopedycznego wzniesionego w latach 30-ych ubiegłego stulecia. Historyczna część zespołu od wielu lat pozostaje wyłączona z eksploatacji i niszczeje, bez większych nadziei, że stan ów wkrótce ulegnie zmianie na lepsze. Jego właścicielem jest bowiem wspomniany Ośrodek, co przy dobrze nam znanych kłopotach finansowych służby zdrowia nie napawa optymizmem w kwestii ewentualnego remontu. Kilka lat temu gmach został wystawiony na sprzedaż (2012).



Castle in Świebodzin

In the thirteenth century there Lagow probably two castles. Castle on the Mountain Hawk ceased to function in the fourteenth century. The site of the present castle at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth century there was a castle or chateau, whose fortifications now nothing is known. In 1299 years the good Łagowskie received as a fief of the princes of Brandenburg Albert von Klepzig. Around 1323 years among Klepzigów, who previously went over Silesia, lost Lagow, who returned the boundaries of Brandenburg. The then ruler of the Mark Ludwig of Bavaria in 1347 gave the pledge Lagow Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and not being able to buy later cast estate waived any rights to them. 
In 1350 years the Order began construction of the castle at the site of earlier fortifications, after increasing haughtiness. It was built close to a square quadrangle outer walls with a height of probably about 12 meters from the gate in the east wing and the tower in the south-eastern corner. Residential wing occupied the entire western curtain wall and had dimensions of 8x27 meters. Building a partial basement on the south side was located in this part of the refectory, and in the north chapel. The castle was located commander of the Order, where in 1372 he was Heinrich von Wedel. 
At the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries was surrounded by hill at the foot of additional ring of walls with a height of up to 9 meters with loopholes and two bastions on the west and north. 
At the beginning of the sixteenth century, in the time of Captain von Liborius Schapelowa, strengthened the castle constructing a tower to a height of 24 meters. At the end of the sixteenth century the north wing yet. During the Thirty Years War the castle probably slightly hurt, he was besieged several times when trying to rebound it to the Swedes, but was not captured. Renovating in the second half of the seventeenth century the castle dostawiono further south wing. Even small changes took place during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, but not fundamentally changed the appearance of the castle. After the partitions of Polish Lagow became a part of Prussia, and after the dissolution in 1810 the Knights Hospitaller castle became the property of the state. Shortly afterwards passed into private ownership and passed through the hands of many families. In 1842 a fire broke out in the castle, but the injury was not serious, destroyed the dome of the tower was replaced by a makeshift roof. 
After World War II the castle served cultural and tourism purposes. Today it houses a museum and a hotel.
