Description

The historical spatial arrangement of Chocianów was created, along with the castle, between 1297 and 1299. In order to protect the boundaries, the Duke of Świdnica and Jawor, Bolko I, erected a fortress here. The present palace is located in the place of the castle. In the 15th century the site was passed between several knight families: Dorheim, Nostitz, Stosch and Dohn. A large fire engulfed the best part of the town in 1633. The same situation happened again in 1746. The function of the palace did not change through all these years; as it remained the most important structure in Chocianów.

The present Baroque palace was designed by Karl Martin Frantz for Melchior Gottlob von Redern. The construction work was carried out between 1728 and 1732. The palace was built on a square plan, with a massive tower located in the middle of the structure. The tower is a remnant of the previous building and it is topped with a rococo spire. The tower is 60 m high and it is surrounded by two-tier Baroque wings. The ball room, situated on the two top storeys, is particularly worth attention. The garden part of the site has observational terraces facing the park, with numerous walking alleys and a rectangular pond, which used to be surrounded by statues. The old oak, poplar and elk trees are the most precious tree specimens found there. Apart from the decorative garden, a farm garden and animal breeding facility were located within the area. The palace park is one of the largest in Silesia. It covers an area of 13 ha.

The remnants of the Baroque décor allow us to imagine how beautiful it was before the damages, which took place in 1945. The yard was decorated with a fountain, built in the middle of a circular driveway. The historical spatial arrangement includes, apart from the palace, the buildings located within the streets: Parkowa, Głogowska, Kolejowa, Ogrodowa and Wspólna.
