Description

The 12th-century hilltop Castello di Gradara remains one of the region’s finest examples of medieval architecture, with an interior packed with authentic furnishings that were extensively restored in the 1920s. This medieval fortress is protected by two walls, the outermost of which extends for almost 800 m (2,600 ft), making it one of the area’s most imposing structures. The castle is one of the most visited monuments in this part of the country and is the scene of regular cultural and musical events. Legend has it that this site provided a romantic setting for the tragic story of star-crossed lovers Paolo and Francesca, who were immortalized in Dante’s "Divine Comedy." To explore the castle on a guided tour, remember to reserve your tickets by phone or online before you make the trip.
