Sonnenburg Castle, also called Badia Castle, lies on a small hill at the entrance to San Lorenzo di Sebato, before the town of Brunico. Unfortunately, there are no remains of the original convent of Sonnenburg. However, the ruins of the medieval curtain wall can still be seen.

Originally, Badia Castle was built as the residence of the noble family of Lurn, in the year 1020 it became a very reputable convent for noble women (Order of Saint Benedict). In 1785, however, Emperor Joseph II closed it down. The crypt of the convent church hosts some very interesting and well maintained medieval frescoes, which were discovered during some restoration works. The curtain wall with its embrasures and medieval round towers is very worth to be visited, too. Today, Badia Castle hosts a very elegant hotel, which was renovated in a very tasteful and appropriate way - it is accessible to hotel guests.

Brunico Castle is located on a hill (Kühbergl) in the old town of Brunico in Val Pusteria, in South Tyrol.

Built by the bishop of Bressanone Bruno von Kirchberg to defend his possessions, the castle was first mentioned in 1271 as the castrum Brunekem, laying the foundations for the foundation of the city of Brunico only afterwards. Expansion was carried out between 1323 and 1326 with the bishop Albert von Enna, and between 1427 and 1437 on the orders of bishop Ulrich Putsch, while it was renewed by the bishop Christoph von Schroffenstein during the period between 1509 and 1521.

The castle is an important part of the city, now as centuries ago, and the city chronicles testify that within its walls it hosted famous names, such as Emperor Maximilian I and Emperor Charles V.

The high door on the north side is walled up, but one can easily sense that it was once important access and that the tower was inhabited. The south entrance, originally accessible only by the drawbridge, consists of a late Gothic portal, and on the tower above you can see the coat of arms of Bishop Andreas von Österreich, which dates back to the period between 1591 and 1600.

The main entrance to the castle is a late Gothic portal from 1584, which was once only accessible via a drawbridge. Passed through the portal you get to the inner courtyard and to the rooms where you can admire the many coats of arms of the bishops who have lived here over the centuries. The bishop rooms, spacious and bright, were renovated during the last restoration of 1900 according to the taste of the era: in the living room you can see a coffered ceiling and a floor decorated with wood carvings and in each room there is a characteristic stove of stucco.

There is also a chapel, built during the restoration of 1900. In neo-Gothic style, it houses a triptych depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary and below scenes inspired by the Old Testament.

Over the centuries the manor continued to be used as a residence for the bishops. Coming to the present day in 2004, the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation bought the property from the bishop's canteen, giving up the use of the premises to the City of Brunico.

In 2011 the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner inaugurated his fifth face of the "Messner Mountain Museum" inside the castle of Brunico: an interactive museum dedicated to the mountain and its peoples, where, even before the mere museum exhibition, it was placed particular attention to the exchange of experiences with mountain populations. A museum, called Ripa, where the mountain and the man are at the center of everything, with an exhibition including objects from the different mountain populations like the Tibetans, Hunza, Mongols and Sherpa and that gave birth to a "new" great interest for the castle attracting national and international visitors.

Castello di Brunico

Il castello di Sichelburg (in tedesco Sichelburg), è un castello ubicato presso Falzes in Val Pusteria (BZ).
Il nome del castello deriva dal termine tedesco Sichel, che in italiano si può tradurre con "falce": due falci appaiono appunto nello stemma dei proprietari, la famiglia Platzzoller.

Per quanto si sappia, il maniero apparteneva fin dal 1356 alla famiglia aristocratica dei signori di Falzes, in seguito, tra il 1524 e il 1761 passò alla famiglia von Mörl.

La struttura del castello è molto compatta e assomiglia a un torrione. Le pareti laterali sono ornate con caratteristici erker.

Oggi è diventato un maso contadino, e negli anni 2002-2003 ha subito un restauro. Il primo lotto è costato alle casse comunali 164.000 Euro, mentre il secondo 165.924,18 Euro.

Castello di Sichelburg

Castel Lamberto (in tedesco Lamprechtsburg) è un castello che si trova nel territorio di Lunes (Luns), una frazione del comune di Brunico, in Provincia di Bolzano.

Il castello è facilmente raggiungibile da Brunico in un'ora di passeggiata, eventualmente in macchina in pochi minuti dal centro abitato di Riscone; è anche visibile per un breve tratto dalla ferrovia della Val Pusteria.
Il castello si trova sopra un picco che dà sulla stretta gola della Rienza in Val Pusteria, ad un'altezza di 990 m s.l.m.

Le prime notizie di questo insediamento si hanno di una "Curtis" (un podere) con cappella "ad S. Lantpertum" risalgono al 1090. L'attuale castel Lamberto risale invece ai primi anni del XII secolo (Alberto di Rischon), ed era di proprietà dei Signori di Rischon, ministeriali dei Vescovi di Bressanone. Da allora essi si fecero chiamare Signori di Rischon e St. Lamprechtsburg.

Dopo l'estinzione di questa stirpe intorno al 1380, i vescovi diedero il castello in feudo a diverse famiglie, tra cui i Conti di Gorizia.

Durante la guerra di successione del Tirolo (ai tempi di Margarethe Maultasch) il castello fu conquistato e distrutto due volte: nel 1336 da Margravio Carlo (che successivamente divenne l'imperatore Carlo IV di Lussemburgo) e nel 1346 da Ludwig von Brandenburg.

Nel 1692 il vescovo di Bressanone diede il feudo a Johann Winkler von Colz zu Rubatsch, i cui discendenti rimasero in possesso del castello fino al 1811, quando passò in proprietà privata. Tra questi discendenti vi fu anche il noto Ambrosius Winkler zu Colz, l'ultimo prelato della Certosa di Senales (deceduto nel 1782). Nel 1812 i Colz vendettero il castello al sacerdote Josef Hauptmann, i cui eredi ne sono tuttora i proprietari.
La cappella
La cappelletta del castello risale nella sua forma attuale al XVII secolo ed è stata restaurata nel 1962. È un santuario molto frequentato, dove fino ai tempi della prima guerra mondiale fu venerata anche la Santa Kummernus, invocata soprattutto dalle donne in difficoltà.

Castel Lamberto

Il castello di Chela (in tedesco Kehlburg) è un castello che si trova nel territorio comunale di Gais (BZ), a 1188 metri. Dalla sua posizione, domina la valle di Tures e la città di Brunico.
Storia
Dove ora sorge il castello alla fine del X secolo si trovava un maso di proprietà del nobile Liuto, che fu acquistato dal vescovo di Bressanone Sant'Albuino nel 995, proprio allo scopo di ricavarvi un complesso fortificato. L'opera di costruzione continuò anche con i suoi successori nei primi decenni dell'XI secolo.

Nel corso degli anni il castello rimase proprietà della Chiesa che lo dava di volta in volta in affido o in pegno. Nel 1433 Jakob IV di Lutago fu nominato dapprima curatore e poi affidatario del castello. Neppure Sigismondo il Danaroso riuscì a sottrarlo al controllo della diocesi.

Nel 1487 il castello fu affidato alla famiglia dei Dinkhauser di Gais, cui succedettero, nel 1545 i Rost: il castello - che stava lentamente cadendo in rovina - fu affidato dal vescovo ad Hans von Rost, fidato comandante alle sue dipendenze. La ristrutturazione fu completata dal figlio di questi, Karl Johann.

Uno tra i più noti lirici tirolesi, Hermann von Gilm (1812-1864), riuscì a far divenire famosi i Kehlburger Maifestspiele come speciali avvenimenti artistici e sociali.

Il maniero rimase per 350 anni ai Rost fino al 1891, quando Karl von Rost lo vendette al vescovo di Košice Zigmund Bubics. Questi investì ingenti somme nel recupero della struttura, ma fece fallimento.

Il castello passò dunque ancora di mano, questa volta ad un console tedesco (1907), il quale però lo perse con la fine della prima guerra mondiale: dopo l'annessione dell'Alto Adige all'Italia, i beni degli stranieri nelle nuove province furono nazionalizzati.

Lo Stato lo vendette poi alla famiglia Vascellari, che ne rimase proprietaria fino al 1997. Attualmente il castello e il bosco circostante sono di proprietà di una famiglia di Gais.

Il castello oggi
Un disastroso incendio, le cui origini non furono mai chiarite, divampò nella notte del 30 aprile 1944: il castello, gravemente danneggiato, non fu più ricostruito e fu visitato negli anni da ladri e vandali. Attualmente è ridotto a stato di rovine.

La diocesi, su interessamento del parroco del paese, fece ristrutturare la cappella dedicata a sant'Erasmo e attestata per la prima volta in occasione della consacrazione del 1113, meta da sempre di pellegrinaggi per richiedere grazie per i dolori di ventre e stomaco.

Per raggiungerlo
È possibile raggiungere il castello seguendo il sentiero n. 2 che dal paese di Gais, attraverso un fitto bosco, raggiunge in un'oretta le antiche rovine. L'accesso a ciò che resta dell'edificio è tuttavia vietato per pericolo di crolli.

Castello di Chela

The antique Badia Castle known as Ćiastel de Tor is located in San Martino in Badia and houses the Museum Ladin.
In 1230, a three-storey residential tower was built by the attendants of the Bishops of Bressanone in the village of San Martino di Badia (St. Martin in Thurn). It was first documented under the name “Turris in Geder” in 1290. In this context the Lords of Rodank-Schöneck were feuds of the building until 1331. In the years to follow, the residential tower was amplified by a crenelated circular wall and a great hall. Also the tower was modified and two storeys were added and converted into a granary. Also in 1500 there were renovations. The Roman great hall was enlarged and two round towers were added to the circular wall.

When the bishops lost reign of the Court of Thurn and Ćiastel de Tor - “Schloss Thurn” in German - represented the centre of this complex, farmers purchased the castle. Until the castle has been rearranged it has been inhabited by their descendants. Now Ćiastel de Tor houses a museum.

Since 2001, Ćiastel de Tor in San Martino in Badia is venue for the so-called Museum Ladin, the Ladin Museum. The exhibited items and documents provide an insight into the history, culture, legends and handicraft of the Ladin speaking Dolomite valleys. Moreover several events such as exhibitions and concerts take place in the inner courtyard. And how to reach Ćiastel de Tor? A street leads on the hill. On the right side of the street there’s a covered carpark as well as open parking lots, on the left side there’s the castle.

Castel Tor

Il castello di Rodengo (ted.: Schloss Rodenegg) è un castello medioevale che si trova nei pressi del paese di Rodengo, all'inizio della val Pusteria, in Alto Adige. L'interno è visitabile in alcuni periodi durante l'anno.
Cenni storici
La fortezza fu eretta da Friedrich von Rodank nel 1140 sopra uno sperone roccioso che domina la valle sottostante e rimase in suo possesso fino al 1300. Il castello è rimasto nel corso della storia imprendibile, ed è oggigiorno ben tenuto e anche per questo ammirato.

Il castello fu ampliato dalla famiglia del noto trovatore Oswald von Wolkenstein nel 1530, affermandosi come uno dei più imponenti dei castelli dell'Alto Adige. Attualmente sono rimasti la torre, un modesto palazzo e una cappella.

Al giorno d'oggi all'interno degli edifici si trova un museo, visitabile dal 15 marzo fino al 15 ottobre (escluso il lunedì); inoltre spesso viene utilizzato per cerimonie come matrimoni.

Il castello e il paese sono situati in una particolare posizione che gode di un panorama mozzafiato e una strada panoramica costantemente soleggiata; infatti da Rodengo, si apre in tutta la sua bellezza l'alpe di Rodengo, un altipiano che sorge a ben 1800 m di quota.

Caratteristiche del castello
Il castello è famoso soprattutto per i suoi affreschi, rinvenuti solo nel 1972, che rappresentano 11 scene del Ciclo di Ywain (dell'inizio del XIII secolo) composto da Hartmann von Aue, in cui l'eroe è basato sulla figura storico-leggendaria di Owain mab Urien. Tali affreschi sono i più antichi d'Europa nel loro genere.

Notevoli anche il serraglio e la cappella dedicata a San Michele.

Castello di Rodengo

History
The Castle of Tures is built by the dominant family of the valley, the Barons of Taufers, in the early twelfth century in a dominant position, flanked by the imposing panorama of the Dolomite peaks.

However, when in 1340 the branch of the Tures family became extinct, the castle passed into the ownership of several families, but fell in the course of the years in ruins. At that time the castle consisted only of a keep, the palace, a tower and a further building.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Ludwig Lobmayr reestablished the structure for the first time and in the second post-war period the Benedictine abbot Hieronymus Gassner completely restored the walls and rebuilt the tower.

The complex then presents itself today in different architectural elements: a Romanesque part, originally from the period of the Lords of Taufers and a Gothic section dating back to the time of the Bishops of Bressanone. The habitable tower with double arched windows, the keep and the chapel of the castle in Romanesque style date back to the first period of construction of the thirteenth century while doors and drawbridges added are dated to 1500.

Since 1977 the castle has been owned by the Castelli dell'Alto Adige Association and a large part of the entire structure is now accessible to the public, attracting over 70,000 visitors each year.

There are over 64 well-appointed rooms, of which about two-thirds are clad in pine, including a chapel with frescoes by Friedrich Pacher, the armory, the library, the audience hall, the prince's room and also an inn , ideal for offering visitors a break after a visit.

All the castle is unmissable, but in addition to the size and richness of the furnishings, what makes it unique is the landscape in which it is immersed, as well as the feeling of being able to perceive the atmosphere of the past events in the rooms of the manor.

Castello di Tures

Castel Monguelfo - “Schloss Welsperg” in German - is located above the eponymous village and is undoubtedly a particular castle complex, known as “core castle”. One of the oldest parts is the high donjon dating back to 1126 AD. The brothers Schwikher and Otto von Welsperg had this castle built - the Lords of Welsperg were one of the most significant noble families of Tyrol. Due to their smart commercial activity and administrative work as well as their wedding politics, they built up a fortune and increased their importance.

For this reason, in 1359 Georg of Welsperg purchased the castle on the opposite, Castel Torre - Burg Thurn in German. Consequently both castles were in possession of the Lords of Welsperg. In the 15th and 16th century, Castel Monguelfo near the homonymous village was considerably enlarged and reconstructed. In 1765 there was a fire which destroyed parts of the castle complex, including the great hall and the commercial building. Despite of the fact that there were renovation works, the castle started decaying and has no longer been inhabited.

Today the castle, under administration of the board of trustees “Kuratorium Schloss Welsperg”, is venue for numerous concerts and festivities, but it remains the private property of the Counts of Thun-Hohenstein-Welsperg. The complex is also open to the public - several exhibitions are dedicated to South Tyrolean artists, such as Paul Troger, the well-known Baroque painter born in Monguelfo, or the contemporary artist Robert Griessmair who is famous for his faces carved on wood trunks. And how to reach Castel Monguelfo? It is located above Monguelfo (Welsberg) and can be reached in a 10-minute walk. The 2.5 km long Castle Path, a round trail, leads from the village centre past the castle. The extended version, the 6 km long “Big Castle Round”, however, takes you also past the above mentioned ruin of Castel Torre.

Castello di Monguelfo

Castel Colz is a Renaissance castle located in the center of the small village of La Villa, in the Bolzano municipality of Badia. The first traces of the building date back to 1536, when Hans von Rubatsch had permission from Emperor Ferdinand I to build a noble residence. The construction, in Gothic style, carried out on a dolomite rock spur, ended within a year or so. The castle consists of four towers, two of which are round and two other rectangular. Later the building was modified by the Colz, whose name it still retains, and then by the Winklers and then again by the Mayerhofers.

The name of Castel Colz is also linked to that of Francesco Guglielmo Brack (in Ladin "Gran Bracùn"), a knight really existed, even if his deeds are often linked to mere legends of cruelty in Val Badia.

Castel Colz was left in ruins around 1850, but in 1988 it was restored to be used as a luxury grand hotel. In 2010, the structure closed the business to return to being a private residence.
