Il castello di Pietramogolana è un maniero medievale i cui resti sorgono su uno spuntone di roccia a strapiombo sul fiume Taro a Pietramogolana, piccola frazione di Berceto, in provincia di Parma.
La prima fortificazione a presidio della val Taro fu eretta probabilmente già nel VII secolo. "Petra Mugulana", all'epoca posta al confine tra i territori dipendenti dalle città di Parma e Piacenza, fu infatti menzionata per la prima volta in un diploma del re dei Longobardi Pertarito del 23 ottobre 674.

Grazie alla sua posizione strategica, la rocca fu a lungo contesa dalle più importanti famiglie della zona. All'inizio dell'XI secolo apparteneva al conte Plato Platoni, che alla sua morte nel 1022 la lasciò al quinto figlio Begarolo. Tuttavia già nel 1035 l'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Corrado II il Salico concesse al vescovo di Parma Ugo l'autorità su tutto il territorio della città, da cui dipendeva anche il maniero; l'autorità diocesana, esercitata attraverso i canonici del Capitolo della Cattedrale di Parma, fu confermata da altri imperatori, tra i quali Ottone IV di Brunswick, che nel 1210 concesse piena autorità al vescovo Obizzo Fieschi, il quale fece fortificare i castelli posseduti nel Parmense e in particolare quello di Pietramogolana.

Nel 1219 l'imperatore Federico II di Svevia concesse al Comune di Parma la conferma degli antichi diritti, tra cui il pieno potere sul territorio; ciò fu interpretato dal podestà Negro Mariani da Cremona quale attestazione della completa autonomia dall'autorità episcopale; Obizzo Fieschi si oppose e si rivolse al papa Onorio III, che l'anno seguente ristabilì l'autorità della diocesi su tutti i territori governati in precedenza, tra cui il castello di Pietramogolana; l'accordo tra il Comune e il vescovo fu ratificato nel 1221. Obizzo Fieschi assegnò il castello ai conti Platoni, in cambio del versamento di 50 libbre imperiali.

Nel 1240 il marchese Oberto II Pallavicino conquistò il forte di Pietramogolana, di cui fu investito ufficialmente nel 1249 da parte dell'imperatore Federico II di Svevia; nel 1260 i fratelli Rangone, Uberto, Alberto e Rodolfo Platoni presero possesso del castello, poi riconquistato alla diocesi di Parma nel 1295 da Gianquirico Sanvitale, che ne fu investito dal vescovo Obizzo Sanvitale. Nel 1327 l'imperatore Ludovico il Bavaro confermò al marchese Manfredino Pallavicino i privilegi sulle terre possedute dalla casata, tra cui Pietramogolana; nel 1355 il Signore di Milano Bernabò Visconti confermò invece l'investitura a Giberto Sanvitale, erede di Gianquirico. Nel 1361 i Platoni alienarono la loro terza parte del feudo di Pietramogolana al conte Giberto.

Nel 1391 i Pallavicino presero possesso con la forza del castello, distruggendolo; nel 1395 il marchese Niccolò Pallavicino ne fu ufficialmente investito dall'imperatore Venceslao di Lussemburgo e nel 1404 ricostruì il maniero. Nello stesso anno Pier Maria I de' Rossi attaccò e conquistò il forte e le terre vicine, tra cui Berceto;[18] tuttavia già nel 1408 Giacomo Terzi gli sottrasse Pietramogolana,per perderla ancora l'anno seguente in favore dei Rossi in base a una sentenza, cui nel 1412 fece opposizione il vescovo di Parma Bernardo Zambernelli appellandosi al Tribunale della Rota Romana; riottenuta la rocca, nel 1423 la diocesi la riassegnò ai fratelli Manfredo e Bartolomeo Pallavicino.

Nel 1428 le truppe del duca di Milano Filippo Maria Visconti, guidate dal capitano di ventura Niccolò Piccinino, assaltarono il castello di Pellegrino, arrestando il marchese Manfredo Pallavicino; quest'ultimo fu costretto sotto tortura a confessare di aver congiurato contro il duca, che lo condannò a morte confiscando tutte le sue proprietà, tra cui Pietramogolana, che furono assegnate al Piccinino. Nel 1450 il vescovo Delfino della Pergola riuscì a recuperare il feudo; il castello fu ampliato e rinforzato nel 1460 dal vescovo civitatense Agostino, commissario apostolico del papa Pio II, che assegnò Pietramogolana al conte Stefano Sanvitale.

Nel 1551 i Rossi assaltarono e conquistarono il forte, ma l'anno successivo lo restituirono ai Sanvitale;[ in seguito tuttavia il castello perse il suo ruolo strategico, cadendo in un lento declino a causa del disinteresse da parte della casata.

Nel 1627 il feudo fu ceduto alla Camera Ducale di Parma che lo assegnò al conte Cornelio Palmia; i suoi eredi lo mantennero fino al 1739, quando la famiglia si estinse con la morte dell'ultimo conte Luigi e Pietramogolana fu riassorbita dal ducato di Parma e Piacenza.

Verso la fine del XIX secolo le famiglie del borgo acquistarono il castello, ormai ridotto a un cumulo di rovine.

Nel 2012 i numerosi proprietari dei ruderi donarono l'antico maniero al Comune di Berceto, che incaricò l'architetto Roberto Bruni del progetto di recupero, non ancora avviato per mancanza di fondi.

Castello di Pietramogolana

The “Villa of Chiosi” was constructed during the last years of the seventeenth century by the brothers Carlo and Francesco Dosi, two rich business men who had found in Pontremoli an ideal place where the trade among the Leghorn harbor and the Po Valley (italian: Pianura Padana) where flourishing.

The history of the mansion is tied to the history of the Dosi family, who from its construction to the present day has always been connected to this place, going through periods of splendor and through periods of abandon, until coming to the challenging restoration thanks to which today we can admire the Villa in all of its glory.
The first historic information about the Dosi family are related to the pledge of allegiance that was made in Modena in 1168 by some family members and to their participation to conflicts for territorial supremacy, which took place in that city during the XII and the XIV centuries. Then the family moved to Bologna and later to Belgioso in the province of Pavia; in 1496 a Guglielmo, moved to Pontremoli as a commander of the Sforzesco Castle of Piagnaro.

In the next decades the Dosi family began a lucrative trading activity between Pontremoli, Leghorn and Piacenza and in a short time they reached a remarkable welfare.

In the meantime, thanks to cautious wedding politics, the family tied itself to the most important local houses. The full recognition of the family in Pontremoli happened at the end of the first half of the XVII century, when Carlo’s son, Nicolò Dosi (1619-1669) was admitted to the General Council of Pontremoli.

During the last decade of the seventeenth century, the heirs -Carlo and Francesco- of the rich merchant Nicolò Dosi, built and decorated the so called “house of Chiosi”. At the entrance of the Villa, the visitors can witness the two brothers accompanied by the family coat of arms (a stork, a tower and two dolphins) and by cartouches -ornate frame- that reports the data 1700, when the house was constructed. The idea and the project of the Villa are related to the figure of Carlo Dosi, he was a man of vast culture, lover of art, architecture and gardening, who -for the decoration of his house- chose among some of the most famous artists of that period, as the architect and decorator Francesco Natali and the painter Alessandro Gherardini.

In 1724 Carlo Dosi died and the interests of the family were conducted by his son, Giuseppe Antonio Dosi (1679-1769) with great initiative, although he moved his interests and his financial resources into the construction of city palace. In these years Giuseppe Antonio focused on policy and affairs, in order to occupy a more influential social position, becoming marquise in 1733.

The descending parable of the family started with the next generation: while the economic conditions in Pontremoli were adverse, the heirs faced hereditary issues. These dynamics lead not only to the division of the property and of the villa, but also to a patrimonial crisis of the family. The abandon of the house the day after French Revolution represents the acme of this sequence of events. During the XIX century and the XX century, the fortunes of the family started to rise again, thanks to figures like the one of Gian Simone (1790-1854), Gian Carlo (1824-1915), who is remembered because he presented to the king Vittorio Emanuele II with other important people, such as the composer Giuseppe Verdi, the results of the plebiscite for the annexation of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza to the Kingdom of Piedmont who rapidly became the Kingdom of Italy and his son Andrea (1863-1924).

With a lot of efforts the house and the property have been gathered, creating the conditions for that Gian Carlo (1896-1979) and Pier Andrea (1928…) could end the work, with the completion of the restoration in 1990.

Villa Dosi Delfini

Pontremoli, defined by Fredrick II as the “key and door to the Apennines,” was a medieval oppidum and a trading village, a crossroads of transit routes, including the Francigena, and in the 12th and 13th centuries, a free comune. After its redevelopment in the 1700s, the medieval and Baroque periods began to co-exist.

Piagnaro Castle, located on a hill overlooking the village, was built around the year 1000 to watch over the road network that wound its way through these valleys, becoming an integral part of the city’s defense system. Its name comes from the sheets of sandstone used to cover the roofs of homes, known as “piagne”. From the courtyard at the top of the fortress, visitors can enjoy a marvellous view that ranges from the valleys down below to the mountains that frame the village of Pontremoli, situated right at the foot of the castle.

Piagnaro Castle

Castello di Compiano is a castle in on the top of Compiano's hill, in the province of Parma, northern Italy.

History
It is believed to have been built in the early Middles Ages by the Lombards, on the road which links the neighbouring Emilia and Liguria. It first belonged to the Malaspina family, then to the Commune of Piacenza and, finally, to the Landi family which ruled the area for 425 consecutive years, eventually forming a small independent principality, the Landi State.

Between the 16th and the 17th centuries, Compiano was in its prime, and minted its own currency, opened state schools and started a pawn system. In the 18th century Compiano passed from the Farnese to the Borbone family, and was then annexed to the realm of Maria Luigia of Austria, then Duchess of Parma, who used the castle as a State prison for Carbonari captives in 1821.

Before World War II it was used as a girl's orphanage. After the war ended, the school was closed down and the castle was bought by Marchioness Lina Raimondi Gambarotta who, after her death in 1987, left it to the Compiano's Municipality.

Built on a rocky spur which dominates the river Taro, the castle is similar to a projection from the surrounding fortified walls.

Compiano Masonic Museum
Since July 2002, the castle hosts the International Masonic Museum Orizzonti Massonici, the only museum of this kind in Italy. The three rooms dedicated to this museum contain precious relics, such as medallions, paintings, and honours belonging to the British Masonic symbolism used in the 18th and 19th Century; one of the rooms, called room 33, holds various Italian relics and objects displayed by the Italian Masonic association Grande Oriente d'Italia - Palazzo Giustiniani.

Castello of Compiano

From its position on that sheer outcrop of red jasper, the rocca or fort, looms imperiously over the burgh and valley below. With its sturdy curtain wall, embattled parapet-walks, guard towers, and castle keep, the fort is a fine example of medieval siege architecture (13th – 14th century), though what we see today is the result of layered modifications applied over the centuries.

The interiors are arranged around a broad outer bailey, or central court, which is accessed via the gate house. The residential section houses the Museo della civiltà valligiana, a small museum with tools and articles of daily local use dating back to 19th and early 20th century.

The main hall is bordered on the north and west sides by a series of intercommunicating rooms known as the Princess’ Halls, which have retained some of the late Gothic coffered ceilings, grotesques and grisailles wall paintings executed in mid-16th century. From one of these rooms it is possible to descend in the Womens garden, a hanging garden added at a later date.

From the well courtyard is the access to the granaries and the stalwart keep, the original nucleus of the fort, later turned into a prison. In the 16th century arcaded courtyard stand the remains of the little chapel installed by the Landi princes. The artillery fortification, commissioned by Manfredo Landi il Magnifico in the 15th century, recently restored, is now available for visits.

The castle is accessible for disabled people only partially or accompanied by a guardian. Pets are allowed.

Castle of Bardi 

Il castello di Ravarano è un maniero medievale che sorge nella piccola frazione di Ravarano, appartenente al comune di Calestano, in provincia di Parma.
Storia
La fortezza originaria fu innalzata a presidio della val Baganza, probabilmente agli inizi dell'XI secolo su iniziativa del Comune di Parma, che desiderava difendersi dalle incursioni provenienti dalla Lunigiana.

Nel 1214 il marchese Pelavicino Pallavicino acquistò il maniero dal Podestà di Parma Baroccio Dal Borgo[2] e nel 1249 suo figlio Oberto II ne fu investito dall'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Federico II di Svevia.

Nel 1267 i guelfi parmigiani attaccarono e conquistarono il maniero e nel 1297 il Comune di Parma decretò di non ricostruire più alcuna fortificazione a Ravarano.

Manfredino Pallavicino, unico erede del padre Oberto II morto nel 1269, rientrò in possesso del maniero insediandovi nel 1309 il castellano Bonaccorso Draghi. Nel 1312, mentre quest'ultimo era impegnato in battaglia a Berceto, il marchese di Pellegrino Pelavicino III Pallavicino, alleato di Giberto III da Correggio e dei guelfi parmigiani, cinse d'assedio la fortezza e la conquistò; tre anni dopo, raggiunta la pace tra i Comuni di Parma e Borgo San Donnino, Manfredino tornò in possesso delle fortificazioni di Ravarano, Casola e Solignano.

Nel 1395 l'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Venceslao di Lussemburgo confermò al marchese Niccolò Pallavicino i privilegi sui feudi di Busseto, Borgo San Donnino, Solignano, Ravarano, Monte Palerio, Tabiano, Bargone, Serravalle, Pietramogolana, Parola, Castelvecchio di Soragna e Soragna.

Nel 1417 il marchese Niccolò III d'Este, Signore di Parma dal 1409, accusò di tradimento Uberto Pallavicino e occupò con le sue truppe il castello di Ravarano. La situazione cambiò dopo pochi anni, col ritorno del dominio visconteo; nel 1432 il duca Filippo Maria Visconti dichiarò ribelle il marchese Jacopo Pallavicino e confiscò i suoi beni, tra cui metà del feudo di Ravarano, che assegnò in segno di riconoscenza al comproprietario Antonio Pallavicino, figlio di Uberto.

Nel 1444 il marchese Federico Pallavicino promulgò fra le mura del maniero gli Statuti di Valle, che, redatti dal giureconsulto Guidantonio Gaiafasi, garantirono per secoli ampia autonomia governativa ai vassalli del feudo.

Nel 1455 il duca di Milano Francesco Sforza investì ufficialmente del feudo di Ravarano la famiglia Pallavicino, che ne fu riconfermata nel 1470 e nel 1476.

Nel 1482 Guido de' Rossi, con l'aiuto dei Torelli, attaccò il castello ma ne fu respinto; depredò quindi la vallata circostante.

Nel 1687, in seguito alla morte dell'ultimo marchese del ramo di Ravarano, la Camera Ducale di Parma avocò a sé tutti i diritti sul feudo, che cedette ai fratelli Gian Simone e Lelio Boscoli; nel 1707 il marchese Andrea Boscoli ne ottenne la permuta con Berceto.

Nel 1728 il castello fu assegnato al conte Paolo Anguissola, al quale seguì nel 1752 il conte Beltramo Cristiani, governatore di Mantova; alla sua morte nel 1758 Ravarano passò ai figli Gianfrancesco e Luigi. Nel 1805 i decreti napoleonici abolirono i diritti feudali nel ducato di Parma e Piacenza; il maniero, ormai trasformato in elegante casino di campagna, nel 1808 fu ereditato dai marchesi Lalatta, figli di Carlotta Cristiani, sorella di Gianfrancesco e Luigi.

Negli anni successivi il forte fu acquistato dall'ingegner Francesco Bertè, che nel 1832 lo fece ristrutturare e adeguare alle comodità di un palazzo signorile. In seguito il castello fu alienato numerose altre volte, dapprima ai Pozzi, poi ai Prevedoni, ai quali seguirono i Forni e infine i Nanni Fainardi, attuali proprietari.

Castello di Ravarano

Corniglio is located on a promontory that dominates the valleys of the Parma and Bratica rivers. I'ts a wide territory with many little villages scattered around, rich with mountains and lakes, that lies in the Regional Cento laghi park and in the National Tosco Emiliano park.
In the center of Corniglio there is the castle built in 1221 that was property of the Rossi and Farnese families, given to the Municipality in the yeawr 1820.
The castle hosts now the offices of the Municipality and a beautiful Hostel, built in the year 2000, that is an attraction for tourists.
In front of the castle there is the little temple of SS. Lucio and Amanzio that is a war memorial. Via Roma is the most caracteristic place in Corniglio, with stone sculpted portals and the centuries old roman bridge.

Castello di Corniglio

Il castello di Golaso è un complesso fortificato che sorge a poca distanza dal torrente Ceno nella piccola frazione di Golaso, appartenente al comune di Varsi, in provincia di Parma.
L'antica "Agulate" risultava sicuramente già abitata nel 769, ma del castello non si hanno notizie certe né relativamente all'epoca costruttiva né riguardo ai primi proprietari. Secondo alcuni studiosi l'originaria fortificazione potrebbe risalire al VI o VII secolo, mentre altri propendono verso un'epoca più recente, intorno al XIII secolo; la primitiva struttura a carattere marcatamente difensivo fu tuttavia profondamente modificata intorno al XVI o XVII secolo, trasformandosi in una signorile casa-forte tardo-rinascimentale, sede di una tenuta agricola.

Le prime informazioni certe si riferiscono al XVIII secolo, quando l'edificio apparteneva ai conti Rugarli, proprietari anche del vicino castello di Varsi; la casata ne mantenne i diritti feudali fino alla loro abolizione sancita nel 1805 da Napoleone nell'ex ducato di Parma e Piacenza.

Negli anni seguenti il maniero passò alla famiglia Corsini, che ne risultava proprietaria già nel 1832; il castello appartiene tuttora ai discendenti della casata.
Il grande complesso fortificato, sviluppato su una superficie di circa 5000 m², si articola attorno a due cortili; il primo, di forma pressoché quadrata, è anticipato dall'ala d'ingresso a sud e contornato da tutti i principali edifici del castello; il secondo, posto sul retro, si affaccia direttamente sulla campagna.
La porzione occidentale della facciata
La lunga facciata su due livelli è preceduta da un piccolo spiazzo rettangolare delimitato da un basso muretto, con due accessi ai lati e uno frontale, affiancati da pilastri coronati da guglie piramidali; interamente rivestito in pietra come il resto della casa-forte, il prospetto del maniero è caratterizzato dalla presenza di tre torri. Le due estreme, più piccole, si innalzano su alti basamenti cilindrici privi di aperture, mentre le sommità, a pianta ottagonale, si affacciano verso l'esterno con piccole feritoie rettangolari delimitate da mattoni; a coronamento i tetti si elevano sopra ai cornicioni modanati. La massiccia torre sull'ingresso, di forma quadrata, presenta due finestrelle nel mezzo, separate da una fascia orizzontale decorativa in laterizio. Il portale d'accesso ad arco a tutto sesto è affiancato da due lesene con capitelli dorici in lievissimo aggetto, a sostegno dell'architrave ornato con triglifi; ai lati sono numerose le finestre, di cui molte cieche, che puntellano con una certa regolarità la facciata.
All'interno la corte è affiancata su tre lati da ali sviluppate su due livelli, contenenti in origine i locali di servizio e le scuderie, mentre il corpo padronale, noto come il "Palazzo", si staglia più alto di fronte all'ingresso; ai lati di quest'ultimo sono ancora distinguibili le arcate oggi chiuse dell'antico porticato. Pressappoco a metà dell'ala ovest è collocata la cappella, che si distingue per la presenza ai lati delle lesene e in sommità del coronamento triangolare, sovrastato al centro da un piccolo campanile a vela. Per simmetria, anche nell'opposta ala est si trova di fronte all'oratorio una struttura molto simile alla precedente a eccezione delle aperture; accanto a essa è collocato, all'interno di un piccolo corpo aggettante in laterizio chiuso da tetto in lastre di pietra, il pozzo, con apertura ad arco a tutto sesto.

Il "Palazzo" si erge massiccio sul lato settentrionale della corte; privo di decorazioni, l'imponente edificio è attraversato da un lungo androne coperto da volta a botte, che conduce al secondo cortile a forma di U; alle estremità di quest'ultimo, delimitato da un alto muro e da alcuni edifici agricoli, erano in origine collocate due torri quadrangolari, oggi quasi completamente scomparse; di una di esse si ha testimonianza in un disegno ottocentesco conservato presso la Biblioteca Palatina di Parma. Al centro del lato settentrionale, un portale ad arco a tutto sesto delimitato da doppie lesene si apre verso la tenuta e il torrente Ceno.

Secondo la tradizione, il castello ricorderebbe la suddivisione temporale dei mesi e dei giorni dell'anno solare; pare infatti che contenga complessivamente 12 scale, 30 porte e 365 finestre.


Castello di Golaso

History
Located on the bank of the river Ceno, the fortress of Varano has always had the strategic function of monitoring the roads that led to the Via Emilia, in Tuscany and in Liguria. The first historical reference to the Castello Varano de 'Melegari can be found in the Cronulla Pallavicina of 1087 where it is mentioned as a heritage inherited by Uberto Pallavicino, nephew of Adalberto.

Other documents dating back to 1208 speak of its construction on the pre-existing Roman castrum, although its current appearance is due to interventions occurred at the beginning of the fifteenth century, when it was made one of the most advanced examples of military architecture of the time, with adaptations of the old defensive schemes to new technological innovations such as artillery.

The castle remained the property of the Pallavicino family until the beginning of the 15th century, when Rolando Pallavicino was involved in the clash between families with Rossi and Terzi families to control the Via Emilia and strategic passages on the Po. Following these contrasts the castle was taken by Ottobono Terzi and delivered to the Visconti. In 1452 Rolando the Magnificent reconquered the fief and with it the castle that returns in possession of the Pallavicino family.

During the nineteenth century the castle passed into the hands of several owners, until in 2001 the Municipality of Varano Melegari bought the property that from 2013 entrusted the management to Lasse-Cooperativa Sociale.

The complex is different from the other defensive structures of the time: three of the four towers are aligned on the side facing the Ceno, while the keep is positioned on the north side looking towards the street. On the ground floor there was the jail communicating with the courtroom on the first floor, while on the second floor we find the bedroom of the castle and on the upper floor the room of the servants who also had granary functions.

Castello Varano de 'Melegari offers the possibility to rent out its own premises and to organize ceremonies, private parties and meetings in its structures, both inside and gardens.

Castello di Varano de' Melegari 

Malgrate Castle is situated in Villafranca in Lunigiana and its striking round tower has presided over the valley of the River Bagnone for centuries.

The fort, which controlled the most important communication routes from the Apennines, Cisa and Garfagnana, was built in the 14th century (but it probably has older origins) and the Malaspina marquises’ banner waved on its tower, 25 metres tall and topped with a lookout point, until the 17th century.

As well as serving a defensive function, the castle became a noble residence in 1641, when the central part was turned into a palace including the round tower.

However, the appearance of Malgrate is that of a classic medieval fortress: the main part consists of the keep, located on the short side of the feudal palace in a rectangular shape and surrounded by walls, with Guelph battlements, embankments and a walkway which probably dates back to the 14th century.
